Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

Our Little Feminist book for the 2-4 age group this month focuses on bringing people together. The book that's included is about a young girl who finds ways to connect with her friends, all of whom speak different languages, by sharing tea. The activity this month encourages the recipients of this box to decorate and cut out the teacups, milk cartons, sugar cubes, and lemon wedges printed on the back of the welcome note, and use them for imaginative play.

Luli and the Lanuage of Tea by Andrea Wang (author) and Hyewon Yum (illustrator) — Retail Value $18.99 (found on sale here for $13.99)

This book is filled with some really sweet details that took my family by surprise. The story is quite simple, about a young girl named Luli who brings children who all speak different languages together at their childcare program by serving tea. As the children sit around a table and pass tea to each other, we are introduced to the word for "tea" in many different languages—notably, written out in their native text with English pronunciations alongside it—as well as names from their respective cultures. Seeing these characters, hearing these new words, and reading about children with these names is wonderful exposure to some tidbits about other cultures, working toward making our children global citizens through literature. We've enjoyed this book very much!

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book. We especially enjoyed the question that prompted us to look at the similarities and differences between the two cousins' rooms.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. May's single hardback picture book costs $18.99 at full retail price, or $13.00 from Amazon. This subscription isn't one you'll subscribe to if you're looking for a deal; rather, it's an incredible resource for growing your children's home library with books chosen by curators who have an eye for inclusion and representation. Further, the activity, welcome note, and discussion questions add value for me.

Of note: Little Feminist offers four ways to purchase: monthly, three months, six months, and 12 months. They cost $22.95, $21.95, $19.95, and $18.95, respectively. Shipping is always $2.95. So if you were certain you'd like this subscription for a year, it would be $4 cheaper per month and much closer to the book's retail value.

Key Takeaways

We loved reading about Luli's beautiful idea for bringing her friends together. We were just as taken by the new-to-us words and names from other cultures. This book is a wonderful display of what it means to be a good friend and a lifelong learner. It's quickly become a favorite in our family!

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
