Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

The 2-4 age group of Little Feminist returns to the theme of patience now and then, which is a great lesson to expose this age group to. This month's welcome note highlights how the book not only offers the concept of patience, but also of making food with someone you love, and in the process, it teaches about tofu as it goes from farm to table. On the back is a cute activity that entails cutting out two recipe cards, two paper shopping carts, and 12 small ingredient cards. One suggested approach is sort of a matching game as each player shops for what's on their list. My daughter thought the cards were so cute, and had fun playing with them all week. For those at the older end of the age range here, it's also a good cutting activity.

Tofu Takes Time by Helen H. Wu (author) and Julie Jarema (illustrator) — Retail Value $18.99 (on sale here for $14.99)

This story weaves us in and out of reality and fantasy as a young girl named Lin helps her grandmother make tofu from scratch. A hungry Lin asks if it's ready again and again, and her NaiNai likens each patience-requiring step to a part of the tofu's growing and harvesting process. The illustrations take us from the kitchen to colorful imagination scenes and back again. At the back of the book there is a list of tofu dishes, which is a cool touch to take the story off the page. I cook tofu for dinner for our family often, so we enjoyed learning more about a food we already enjoy, but for those not familiar with this traditionally Asian food, it's a great introduction.

We've been receiving Little Feminist's age 2-4 box for two years now, and there has never been a repeat book, but past deliveries like A Big Mooncake for Little Star (from January 2021) and Dad Bakes (from July 2022) struck me as having similar concepts—cooking, family traditions, waiting and passing time—but done in a more compelling way. Mooncake in particular introduces mischief in a way that my daughter really connected with and continues to find humorous.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. For January, the 2-4 age group was sent one picture book that costs $18.99 when bought from a local bookstore or independent retailer, and $14.99 on Amazon. Those thinking of signing up for this subscription should know that it's not a box that you'll find any deals or discounts in; instead, you may find that the added value comes from the book selection, welcome note giving the adult an angle to consider as they read this book to their child, the activity, and the discussion questions.

Key Takeaways

My four-year-old and I enjoyed the picture book chosen this month, though my daughter didn't connect with the main character as much as she had with past LF books. We've received books with similar themes in the past through this box, and liked those better, but this one has its own merits like teaching about a non-Western culture through food and furthering the message of patience.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
