Opening The Box

Little Feminist sends their books in an envelope-style box. Packed snugly inside are the book(s) of the month, a welcome note and activity, and a bookmark with discussion questions listed on the front and back.

Here's What's Inside

Welcome Note & Activity

It's "snow day" month with the 2-4 age group of Little Feminist! Of course not every region experiences snow days, but they tend to happen once or twice per school year where we live, and the unexpected nature of them can be so thrilling in its spontaneity. The welcome note points out things that the featured book has going for it: colorful illustrations, representation of many ethnicities and abilities, names from A to Z that span many cultures, and some interesting verbs.

On the back, there are two activity ideas. The first is to build a snow person by drawing one on paper, then using things found on a nature walk to decorate it. The second is to make sensory "snow" using baking soda and hair conditioner. Two projects that might be fun for folks living in not-snowy regions, as well as some good festive ideas for those stuck inside due to bad weather.

Bus Stop by Angela H. Dale (author) and Lala Watkins (illustrator) — Retail Value $16.99

This book was such a delight! Page after page is filled with simple sentences and movement-filled illustrations as children are waiting for the school bus—so much so that we became engrossed in the wonderfully active waiting and got very taken by surprise when finally a child announces that it's a snow day. From there, the play continues, but with a spirit of celebration that was fun to read enthusiastically, and really made my kids smile. It was also great to find some names of friends among the many names in the book. I can tell this will be one we read again and again, and in a short time from now, our four-year-old will be trying her hand at reading it with help.

Discussion Questions

Little Feminist always provides a bookmark filled with discussion questions for each book included in the box. Some are conceptual, and others ask the child to recall themes or events from the book.

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 per month + $2.95 US shipping. Save with longer subscriptions.

Value Breakdown: Little Feminist Book Club costs $25.90 per month, which includes the cost of shipping. This month, the 2-4 age group was sent one picture book that costs $16.99. This is a rare case when the Amazon price is not a sale price, so it's $16.99 wherever you go. Regular subscribers to this box, or readers of our reviews, know that much of this sub's value comes from the book selection, note, activity, and discussion questions.

Key Takeaways

This month's selection was really fun for both my four-year-old and my one-year-old—and, quite honestly, for me, too. The text is rich, but simple enough that the book lends itself to side conversations about the movement that's depicted in the artwork. I can tell this will also be a book we reach for very soon when our preschooler begins sounding out words in books!

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who's achieved #1000hoursoutside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.
