First Impressions

Living in the northeast, my February isn't that far off from the one that's typical in Scandinavian countries. The temperature dips well below freezing, sleet and snow are constants, and it's a good time for little more than curling up on the couch with a cup of hot cocoa and a good book. I'm not one of those people who snowboards or skis, so I was more than a little relieved to see the folks at Norlii were on exactly my wavelength with the February 2023 edition of their subscription box!

This box was focus on all things "cozy" with an emphasis on providing what the folks at Norlii dubbed "a steaming hot cup of soul-warming wellness."

What's Inside the Box

This month's box is packed with four items with a total value of around $127. It's one item fewer than some recent boxes, but the value tips just a tad higher than the December box to make up for it.

Pillow and Pillow Filler by lb Laursen — Listed Price $59

The biggest item packed in the February box, which no doubt helped cradle some of the other options for their cross-Atlantic trip, was a soft cotton pillow with a soft grey velvet cover. The pillow reminded me of a rectangular that was packed in a box in 2022 that fell victim to my puppy's teeth, so I was excited to dig it out. This version is square and smaller — about 19 1/2 inches by 19 1/2 inches — and has a velvet cover while the September version had a linen cover. But truth be told, I dig the grey which matches my grey couch, and the zipper mid-way across the back is easier to open.

The pillow itself is full of duck feathers inside a cotton sleeve. It's pretty squishy too  — I tried to take a photo of it standing up, but I ended up dropping it on the floor as it's easier to share the full square view that way. Think of it as one of those pillows you smash up to put under your head when you lay on the couch to watch a movie.

Julienne Peeler by Zone Denmark — Listed Value $20

Made from stainless steel, this julienne peeler was popped in the Norlii box to serve as a zester for adding a little zing to a winter drink. With a looped handle, it's a lot easier to handle than the grater I typically use to zest citrus fruits. I also liked the hand feel. It was pretty sturdy but light enough not to make your work harder as you're trying to scrape off the best bits of that orange peel.

I confess I tend to use zest more in the summer months than in the winter, so after a little testing, this one got stowed away in a drawer.

Broste Copenhagen Mugs — Listed Price $30

If you were subscribed to Norlii in 2022, you got a Broste Copenhagen plate for your cookies in the December box, and the two sand-colored mugs wrapped up in this month's delivery are a perfect match both in terms of being made of the same stoneware by the same designer but also as a perfect color match.

The cups are perfect size for a cup of hot cocoa fitting one and a half packets of traditional Swiss Miss perfectly, and I noticed when I flipped one upside down that the lip is a little off from perfect — a nice touch that keeps them from feeling like they just came off a mass production line. The only drawback? I tend to be someone who prefers mugs with a handle for carrying, but that's certainly a personal style concern.

Teak Latte Spoons by Muubs — Listed Value $18

If you're making a hot drink like hot cocoa, you're going to need something to stir the goods together, and these cute little teak spoons will definitely do the trick. They're longer than your standard teaspoon at nearly 8 inches, and they're extremely light. I could see them working well for things like jam as well as a stirrer for a hot drink.

Since they are made of teak, you will need to put in a little extra care — I have a few teak spoons, and I've learned the hard way to keep them far from the dishwasher.

Was This Box Worth It?

Now for the fun — doing the math. A Norlii subscription is $74.90 with $12.95 shipping to the US, and this box was valued at around $127. The math works in your favor here, and the fact that the cups are a perfect match to the December plate helps bring a set together.

The cost of the zester is decent too, especially for the unique design and how easy it is to use. If anything, I'd say the teak spoons are the item I'm most iffy on here — they're cute for stirring, but I'm not sure they're $18 cute, so I'm curious to hear what other subscribers have to say.

As always, subscribers also get a chance to shop the Norlii Scandinavian Store with 20% off more goodies that fit this month's theme and complement your box!

I stay away from down feathers, which are usually ripped out of the sensitive chests of live birds. A lot of the birds used for down are also used for foie gras which means that they are force-fed by having hard metal pipes shoved down their throats. Investigations of “responsible down” have shown rampant abuse of birds who are then killed. So there’s just no such thing as humane down.

For anyone that has received this box for a few years, is this the same grey pillow from the Dec 2020 box? Thanks
