Science Expeditions: "Sports Science"

In our house, sports are a big thing, so when you can couple them with learning, I am all ears. As an educator, I try and find ways to incorporate science and learning into our everyday lives, and one very effective way to do that is through the Little Passports: Science Expeditions subscription. Complete with a comic book, supplies, and educational background, this monthly box is packed with knowledge not only for the kids, but adults too. With our fall baseball season in full swing, we couldn't wait to discover just what kind of experiments a theme like "Sports Science" could include. Read below to see what we discovered.

Sports Science Comic and Activity Book

Every month, Little Passports sends our monthly activity along with a really fun comic and activity book pertaining to the monthly theme. For our "Sports Science" theme, we read an exciting comic, and discovered tips and tricks the pro "foosers" know, along with a maze and word search. This booklet is not only informative, but really teaches students the specific content using colorful and engaging story lines.

This month's comic had Hank and Charlie really intrigued. These competitive little guys just can't resist a comic about sports! They also were impressed to find out that high-level soccer players can kick a ball upwards of 90 miles per hour. Whoa!

Sports Science Instruction Guide

After learning all about air resistance, biomechanics, and kinesiology in the comic book, the boys couldn't wait to get their hands on this month's project. The second they caught a glimpse of the green field; they couldn't wait to get building! With easy-to-follow instructions, the boys were able to easily put this mini foosball table together without any of my help. It was great to watch them work as a team, taking turns, and helping each other out - then finally compete when they were finished! Best of all, this project didn't really require any supplies from home! Yay!

We have discovered that it is always a good idea to read through the instructions first to make sure we have all of our material accounted for and know what is expected for each step.

Project 1: "Mini Foosball"

Included in this month's kit were all of the necessary supplies to create our very own Mini Foosball table. We received 10 clothespins, 2 wooden balls, a sticker sheet, a scorecard, 4 wooden rods, 8 rubber caps, precut wooden pieces, and a felt field. Like I mentioned above, we didn't need to supply any materials this month, though the boys did use markers to decorate once they finished building.

This month's project was pretty self-explanatory. The instructions were easy to follow, and Hank and Charlie did a great job taking turns and working together. Hank crated the base by inserting the slots into the designated holes. Once complete, he added the field. In just a few moments, it was already starting to look like something!

Charlie went ahead and added the wooden rods and rubber stops. Then it was time to add the players. Following the included diagram, all of the players were lined up on offense and defense.

And there you have it! While it was an option to leave the foosball table plain, the boys decided to decorate their players. Using markers, they colored in their jerseys adding numbers and aggressive faces! Didn't it turn out adorable?! After setting up a Mini Foosball tournament, the boys decided the winner gets to pick this weekend's movie for movie night. Stakes are high, folks!

Sports Science Badge

After we completed our activities, we were awarded the Sports Science Badge as a tribute to our hard work and play!

Verdict

Sports are really fun, and while we love to play them, we didn't really have a background in the science behind them. This Sports Science Little Passports kit really gave us a background as to how Kinesiology and Biomechanics work, all through play. Geared specifically for kids 8+, some of these concepts were even a little out of my league, but interesting to learn about. This particular theme was probably the boys' favorite as the Foosball table is something they can play over and over again. For the amount of supplies we received, I feel the $27.95 was a little bit high, and maybe would have been more impressed had they thrown in a box of markers to decorate the table. Overall, we had a very enjoyable day creating this kit and learning about Sports Science. What did you think about this box? Do you currently have any Foosball Tournaments going on in your household?
