Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

My kids love yogurt and we have never actually made our own, even though I hear it's super easy. This "Tart & Tangy" box looked like it would be fun!

What's Inside a Yummy Crate?

Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside, there is a little checklist of what you can find, along with a fun collectible sticker.

Cooking Tools

This month we received a metal thermometer that clips onto the side of your bowl or pot.

Grown-Up Guide

A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well.

Yummy Zine

Our Yummy Zine this month was all about beneficial bacteria! I love that they make it fun and educational by providing what I would consider some interesting information!

Experiment: Yogurt Goo

Our experiment this month was to make some yogurt goo to play with using yogurt and cornstarch.

Activity: Make a Probiotic Pal

Our activity was to make a probiotic pal. They provided two sets of felt shapes with holes along with string and some fluff to stuff them with. There were even googly eyes to finish them off.

The kids thought this was really fun!

Here are their finished pals!

The Recipes: Tart & Tangy

We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month since we received recipes for Homemade Yogurt, Kofta with Yogurt Sauce, and Frozen Yogurt with Blueberries.

Here is a closer look at our Homemade Yogurt recipe. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids!

Homemade Yogurt

This recipe was really very simple, but it required patience and attentiveness as we had to constantly monitor the temperature of our milk as we heated it up. Once we had it mixed up, it went into the oven overnight with the light on to keep it warm and let our bacteria grow!

The yogurt turned out great and the kids were excited to turn them into parfaits with some granola and blueberries!

Yum! They ate it up and are already planning on having more for breakfast tomorrow!

Even our pickiest eater was a fan!

Frozen Yogurt

We also tested out the frozen yogurt recipe which was very easy: we added blueberries, yogurt and honey in the blender, and then we decided to make the "bark style" so we added some chocolate, cranberries and cashews to the top and put it in the freezer overnight.

They loved this even though it was a bit difficult to eat! We could also have added the pieces back to the blender to make it more of a traditional frozen yogurt, but this was a fun new way to try it!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping

My daughter loves getting this each month and I think the mix of recipes, cooking tools, and fun activities combined with the educational experience makes this a well-rounded box that is very worth it!

Key Takeaways

We learned a little bit, had some fun, and had some yummy things to eat! I loved that they included two different ways to prepare yogurt and showed how it could be used as a main dish with the yogurt sauce too. It's a good way to show how versatile some recipes can be!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
