What's Inside This Box
Pride Colors by Robin Stevenson – Retail value $10.95
Ro lovingly referred to this book as the 'rainbow book', and he made me read it to him several times. After that, he took a turn 'reading' it to me! He loves the colors and photos of children and their parents, and he also loves the affirming messages inside the book. We can't get enough rainbows in this house and are allies to the LGBTQ community; we have been teaching Ronan the same messages in this book, and hope that he will grow up without even batting an eye at someone who chooses to live a little differently than him.
Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of Colors by Hena Khan – Retail value $7.99
This book is so lovely. Every page has a rhythmic sound, and it is so easy to read and understand. Faith is so important to so many people, and it is something that should be respected by everybody. I've always found religion fascinating, and I was happy to teach Ronan more about Islam while learning a lot myself, including some Muslim words and customs. Ronan was in it for the colorful pages and was especially thrilled to see the orange page with the little girl's henna-designed hands.
Discussion Questions
Little Feminist Book Club included discussion cards for each book. Each book talked about colors and what they can mean to one's identity. Ro's favorite color is blue, so he was very excited to talk about all the blue things he loves as well as how funny some things would be if they were blue, for example, our dog, Murray. We talked a little about identity and different words to describe ourselves, but that is about as deep as that conversation could go with a 2.5-year-old. He was definitely loving the themes this month; "identity" and "color" themes brought up some great conversation between Ro & I, as always.
Verdict
Little Feminist Book Club sent out two colorful books, each with special messages to share. Ronan was drawn to Pride Colors immediately with its bright pages and photos of happy children, but he also loved Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns for its fun rhyme schemes and lovely imagery. The value of this month's picks comes to $18.94, not quite hitting the mark on the cost of this subscription.
After shipping, this subscription adds up to $25.90 a month; if you're someone who doesn't mind paying a price for an excellent curation and content, then this subscription may be worth it to you. The subscription holds a value that doesn't always monetarily meet its cost, but I appreciate the service.
