First Impressions

Over the summer we had to cut down one of our trees so at the moment we have a pile of wood sitting out back that needs to be turned into firewood. While this hatchet may not work for the giant logs situation we have, I figured it would certainly be helpful once we get it down to splitting size!

This first item isn't listed as coming with our box so it was a nice surprise to find inside. After building yourself a little log structure, you use the string to secure it to one of the logs and pull it to start the fire. This seems like a great emergency item to have since it works on wet wood, requires no kindling, and it's wind and rainproof. The compact size makes it easy to stash with your camping gear or in your emergency bag.
Field Hatchet by Barebones - Retail Value $65

This is a nice-looking hatchet with a super sharp blade ready to go! The handle is a beautiful hickory wood that has a small hole at the bottom for hanging or adding string, while the blade itself is made of blackened steel. It has a nice thick hammer at the other end of the blade and I was impressed with how lightweight the whole thing is! The handle is about 17 inches long while the blade is about 4 x 3.5 inches.
I had my husband put this to the test for us and he was pleased with the performance. He liked the way it handled and how lightweight it was. He used it to split a quarter log into eighths and said it was perfect for that and probably for cutting larger logs as well since the blade was so nice and sharp.

It has a handle and head that can be reset, which I can attest to being fairly easy since we did have to drop the hatchet down a few times on its head to get it set for the first time.

Since this is so lightweight, it will be a nice hatchet to bring on a camping trip, especially since it comes with this nice thick sheath. It has a simple snap design that is simple to operate but still seems sturdy enough to confidently hold the sheath cl0sed when not in use.
Value - Was This Box Worth It?
The Cost: $49 + $4.95 shipping
Value Breakdown: This box costs $53.95 with shipping and we received a hatchet valued at $65. If we include the fire starter which is about another $3 in value, that's about a $12 savings on this hatchet which is a decent deal!
