SAM & LANCE Sustainable Subscription Winter Box Review

Included in our box is a card listing all products and information about the small women owned businesses featured this month.

Rose & Co. Candles Herstory Candle, 9 oz. – Retail Value $24.00

I received this item in 7.5 oz.

Let's dive right in! Our first item is a wonderfully floral-fragrant rose candle. What stood out to me straight away (besides the glorious smell) was the story of Rose and the inspirational message on the candle's label, where each pour represents support for a girl's right to an education. Each candle is hand-poured from a natural soy and coconut wax blend.

I lit this candle in my living room, and sadly (most likely because of the one wick) the fragrance did not fill the room. I then moved the candle to my small bathroom, and I could smell the scent immediately. To get the full fragrance, I suggest lighting in a small-medium sized room.

Olsen & Olsen Biodegradable Dish Cloth – Estimated Value $3.13

Okay- not gonna lie. When I opened this subscription box, before reading the card listing, I had no idea what this piece of fabric was. It felt rough like a paper towel, and seemed too pretty to be used for cleaning. But that's exactly what it's for! This biodegradable towel is made from cotton and cellulose fibers, making them 100% compostable. It feels rough because it's mega durable! Use this to clean up spills and mess, and then reuse. This item is dishwasher and washer safe.

GRL Beauty Hydrate Lip Balm,  2 g – Estimated Value $7.00 CAD (approx. $5.55 USD)

This tint and hydrate lip balm is in the scent peppermint and vanilla and smells so refreshing! I'm not much of a peppermint girl, so the vanilla gives this balm a nice balanced smell.  Not only is the scent refreshing, the feel is too! The peppermint gives your lips a nice energized tingle, while the vanilla adds a creamed texture feel. With ingredients like jojoba seed oil, beeswax, and vitamin E, your lips are on track to stay moisturized and protected from the frigid cold.  I did not notice a tint on my lips, but I'm actually not bothered by that, as tinted chapsticks often look weird on me.

Satya Organic Oat Bath, 250 ml –  Estimated Value (Buy a Double Pack for $19.99 CAD or approx. $15.84 USD)

I've always wanted to take a nice oat bath. I imagine the oats feel like soaking in a bowl of oatmeal and heavy cream- incredibly nourishing and soothing to the skin making you never want to leave the tub. While I sadly wasn't able to try this product (because we have a shower only blah), I can tell you the anticipation is great! This oat bath is gluten-free and is made with calendula - a flower used commonly to treat rashes and infections. The contents smell like a yummy bakery item before you put it in the oven. I'm so excited to try this soon–will update!

Laude the Label Key Ring

This cute 18K gold plated key ring has such an empowering message : Woman for Women. This item also came in a really chic nautical bag. I have a thing for useful packaging and can think of a million ways to use the bag.

Jeln Beauty Cuticle Oil 1 fl oz – Retail Value $15.00 (on sale now for $9.00)

Our last item for this quarter's SAM & LANCE Sustainable Subscription box is a cuticle oil made with all natural ingredients such as almond oil, myrrh essential oil, and jojoba oil. This is my first time owning cuticle oil, and I'm not sure how I've made it 33 Pittsburgh winters without it! I applied just a drop to cuticles, massaged it in, and hello nourishment! This cuticle oil also includes a pineapple fragrant oil for scent, leaving your cuticles with a light island fruit smell.

Verdict: This was my first time reviewing the SAM & LANCE Sustainable Subscription box and I am thoroughly pleased! For one, all items are ethically made AND are made by women small business owners. As a small business owner myself, I appreciate the mission. I found all the items valuable. I cannot wait to try the oat bath, and the cuticle oil will be a staple in my purse. I estimate that I received $65.39 worth of items in this box (this does not include the oat bath and keychain). With the value being more than what you pay for it, I'd say this subscription is worth the money!

Wheeling resident here! So I’m just down the road from you. My cuticles are also usually in shambles. But I’ve discovered a nice added bonus of receiving so many skin care products in sub boxes: I have such a large product stash that I can use high-quality facial skin care items on my hands. It’s made a HUGE difference.

Notably, I ended up with two full sized bottles of Sunday Riley Good Genes, so I started using some (doesn’t take much) on my hands and fingers. After a week I can see an amazing difference; it looks like I’ve erased at least five years of wrinkles from my hands and fingers (maybe not an issue for everyone, but at age 47, I have few facial wrinkles but a ton on my hands)!

I previously did the same thing when I found a huge tube of Strivectin wrinkle treatment at TJ Maxx and as an experiment, applied it to the back of only one hand each time I used it on my face. After a few days I could already see lessened wrinkles on that hand. So maybe dig into your facial skin care stash and find something to use on your cuticles and hands!

Looks like you made a typo or did the exchange rate wrong on the dish cloth.

Same. Did you say something less than positive? About the value? I did.

Pam

Same here. Mine was about the value too.

I hope nobody wants to soak in a bowel of oatmeal. Crazy typo! lol

haha! Thanks for catching, definitely a typo. Although, I looked up bowel just to see if there were any other definitions and found this – “the deepest inner parts or areas of (something)”. So maybe it could work? lol! It’s been changed. Thanks!

I am glad I am not the only person who noticed that.

But, since it is a real word and a noun I can see why a spelling and/or grammar checker wouldn’t have caught it in that position in a sentence.

Doesn’t it say right on the thank you card that this is the “exclusive” box? That means it’s $70.50 for $65 worth of stuff. Even if it were the $52 option, I wouldn’t be happy with a $65 worth of stuff for $52. If I’m shopping at a 10% premium or 20% discount, I’m picking out my own items. This is a very, very poor value proposition for a subscription box. I can’t imagine they’ll stay around long.

Hi!! The note of it being exclusive is a mistake. We received the classic box.

JoJoB

Can you please clarify which box this was? It says in the MSA description that it was the Classic Box but the card they sent with the box reads, “We hope you Love the EXCLUSIVE Winter box!” If this is the Exclusive as opposed to the Classic that is a totally different price point and makes the items values different as well. Thanks in advance for clearing this up!

I love seeing new boxes and I like how they support women owner businesses but sadly, I feel the price is too high for what you get. This feels like a $30 box to me. I’ll watch their next few unboxings. I’d love to see them have more unique offerings rather then over saturated items.

Hi FabSB! Thanks so much for catching that- that was definitely an accident! It should be updated now. 🙂
