Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask, 2.25 oz - Retail Value $48.00

Eh, before I even had a chance to use this product I got the warning email below from BoxyCharm which kind of gave me concern. For that reason, I didn't use this product this month. You all know that is extremely unlike me, but I felt it was the safest course of action since the brand didn't seem willing to provide actual info on exactly what the problem was.

Here is a link to that statement, but I also wanted to include it below:

We at Summer Fridays are carefully monitoring recent community feedback citing temporary redness and irritation experienced by some customers when using Jet Lag Mask. We deeply regret any discomfort or inconvenience caused by this issue and are confident that the use of this product does not pose a threat to the health and safety of our customers.

We have worked with our manufacturer, testing laboratories and an independent chemist to conduct a thorough investigation into the cause and have determined that certain production batches at our third-party manufacturing site were compromised.

To address this issue, we have implemented the following steps:
We have established new, more stringent manufacturing protocols using OTC-level guidelines to ensure each step in the manufacturing process is carefully monitored and checked for full compliance and adherence to our high standards.
We are developing a minor reformulation, including removal of essential oils, that will serve to mitigate any future potential for irritation, while still delivering the results you look for in Jet Lag Mask.

While the number of reports that we have received regarding Jet Lag Mask represents a small percentage of users, we want to operate with an abundance of caution. It’s our recommendation that you patch test the product received in your BoxyCharm Box on your jawline or behind your ear prior to using. It is normal to experience a cooling sensation when applied, but if you experience any unexpected reaction, please rinse it off and discontinue use. If you have further questions or need further assistance just reach out to BoxyCharm and they’ll be there to assist you.

We very much value the Charmer community, appreciate your understanding and hope we continue to have your trust and support.

XoXo Summer Fridays

There is even more info on the Summer Fridays website. This issue doesn't seem limited to just Boxy products. It doesn't look like they will help you with an exchange since this item came in our BoxyCharm box, but it is still good info. All in all, I find the response from both BoxyCharm AND Summer Fridays to be lacking, because the brand could have easily just released the batch numbers that were bad (they ask for this information on their site in order to justify an exchange AND require you to send the bad product back - why?) and BoxyCharm could have extended an additional product or partial refund to customers, but they just relied on the brand's statement to be enough.

I just tried to pull this product up on Sephora to see if this issue was widely reported in customer reviews, but it looks like the product has been removed from the site.

OFRA Mini Mix Face Palette in 'Good to Go' - Retail Value $39.00

Moving on! Normally I am a pretty big OFRA fan. I know they can start to feel like a box brand sometimes, but they make some really lovely highlighters. The color story of this palette also seemed really fun and unique! I was less than impressed with the quality of the palette itself because it felt a little cheap, and I really get annoyed when big palettes don't have a mirror. Why? I also found that not all of these shades were great performance wise. The mattes felt a little lacking in pigment and didn't want to perform with a brush at all. The shimmering shades were much better, but the color story actually felt a little hard to work with on my actual eyes. The blush and bronzer were nice, though I doubt I will use the bronzer much. The absolute best part of this palette was that quad highlighter which was truly wonderful. You can use the shades individually or blend them all together. This is totally more of a dramatic highlighter but you can get a softer look with a bigger brush and a lighter hand.

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna Pro Filt'r Instant Retouch Setting Powder in 'Lavender', 28 g - Retail Value $32.00

I picked this item!

This box wasn't all 'meh'. I loved this loose powder. I have loved most of the FENTY BEAUTY line, so I wasn't surprised. The packaging feels very heavy and special. And I know packaging isn't everything, but I love good product packaging! It makes the whole experience feel so much more special. I picked this very soft lavender shade which was noted as being good for fairer skin. On me, it wears a lot like a translucent powder and gives a very pretty finished look to my face. Loose powder can often be a big mess, but this one arrived with a snap-in barrier layer that keeps everything in place when you aren't using it.

REN Clean Skincare Perfect Canvas Clean Jelly Oil Cleanser, 3.3 oz - Retail Value $34.00

Ren makes a really great jelly cleanser that is ideal for makeup removal. I haven't been wearing as much makeup this last year, but I still wear sunscreen daily and that can stick to my face almost as much as a heavy foundation! I like applying this heavier jelly to a dry face and massaging it in small circles to loosen all the dirt, SPF, and makeup of my day. It does an especially great job because this is an oil based cleanser that latches on to everything! I then rinse with warm water and typically follow up with a lighter cleanser, just to make sure I am totally clean.

FENTY BEAUTY by Rihanna Full Frontal Volume, Lift & Curl Mascara in 'Cuz I'm Black', 12.5 mL - Retail Value $24.00

Heck yeah, more FENTY. I feel like my lashes are weird and some days I am wowed and totally in love with a mascara then the next day my lashes look dreadful and leave me wondering what in the heck happened. Does anyone else have this issue? Just me? Anyway, this mascara kind of felt different from day to day but it never disappointed me with clumping or flaking. Some days it just seemed more dramatic than others. Some days there was over the top volume while other days it felt more like a length boost. But it was never, ever clumpy. And I can embrace that!

PMD Silverpure Makeup Removing Cloth, 0.07 g - Retail Value $30.00

My last item was a makeup cleansing cloth with antibacterial silver inside. While I rarely cleanse without an actual cleanser (or two) this cloth totally removes makeup just with water. When I was traveling a lot I had one of these I would always take to keep my bag weight down. Here's to 2021 having more weekend trips!

Verdict: My BoxyCharm Premium had a value of $207.00 which is great for a $35.00 box. But this delivery felt super inconsistent. I am really disappointed with how the Summer Fridays issue was handled by both BoxyCharm and the brand itself. I also thought the OFRA palette was kind of a bust. I would have been happier just getting a single highlighter from this brand because I know I already would love it. The FENTY products were truly the redeeming elements of this entire box, followed by the REN cleanser. The makeup remover cloth was also a solid addition, though one I probably won't use a ton anytime soon.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You have to be an active Boxycharm subscriber to sign up for the BoxyCharm Premium waitlist. An email will let you know if you are receiving the next box!

Value Breakdown: At $35.00 for this box, here is the approximate cost per item:

  • Summer Fridays Mask: $8.16
  • OFRA Palette: $6.63
  • FENTY BEAUTY Powder: $5.44
  • REN Clean Skin Cleanser: $5.78
  • FENTY BEAUTY Mascara: $4.08
  • PMD Beauty Cloth: $5.10

Alternatively, the average cost of each of the 6 items is $5.83.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I got a palette from Ofra before and it was the most lackluster shadows. I got it on sale and hardly ever return things, but that one wasn’t even worth the half off price!

I have been using my Jet Lag mask twice a week since I received it in my box, and I have not had any issues with it….I think only some of the items were bad and some were ok, and I got lucky and received one that was fine….I absolutely love it, makes my skin feel very soft and smooth and hydrated….I feel bad for whoever got the bad batch, I would say test it first before throwing it out, because you might have received one that is ok.

Wow that’s too bad about the jet lag mask. It’s a bit ironic because I tried a sleeping mask last night from a sample I received from Sephora and I experienced exactly what this jet lag mask was doing to others; severe burning and irritation.

That’s the problem with some of these skincare products. We think it’s just a mask but then a cocktail of ingredients go into it and who knows how our skin will react. It seems like a lot of products have double or even triple duty active products in them, which, when combined with other skincare products, can wreak havoc. Of course I only realized this until after I suffered pretty significant chemical burns on my face. So yeah, definitely be careful!

I always keep a makeup removing cloth in the shower for those times I forgot to remove my makeup before getting in the shower.

There were complaints of skin irritations from the summer fridays mask. There were some batches made from a third party manufacturing company.

I think more brands should remove unessecary mirrors from palette packaging. Nearly everyone applies makeup in front of another mirror anyway, and the mirrors make the packaging virtually impossible to recycle.

Agreed. I never use the mirror in palettes.
