BoxyCharm Premium November 2020 Review

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included. It looks like my assortment this month is box #5.

Now, on to the items!

Grown Alchemist Detox Night Cream with Peptide-3, Echinacea, and Reishi Extract, 40 mL - Retail Value $125.00

FYI: This product is sold on the brand site at the same size but in a black tub, not a tube!

I like the Grown Alchemist brand, and I liked this cream too! I do think it could have been thicker for a night cream, but you all know I am as dry as a desert, and it's also winter so I want all creams to be extra luxe! Inside is a blend of some serious goodies: rose water, sweet almond oil, squalane, algae ferment (love!), peptides, and more! This is a great cream for normal to dry skin, though I think oily skin might enjoy this as a sleeping mask for an instant hydration boost! While I think the price tag on this tube is extra steep even with the good ingredients, getting such a nice cream in a $35 box feels like a real treat! I love the way it quickly absorbs into my skin and leaves behind a nice velvet finish.

Illamasqua Unveiled Artistry Palette - Retail Value $51.00

While this palette is stunning, I have certainly seen many like it arrive in my subscriptions. I think I am always on the lookout for something that feels different! This color story has 12 different shades: 6 shimmers/metallics, and 6 mattes. I found the shimmers to perform noticeably better than the mattes. In fact, while the metallics blew me away in terms of pigments, in comparison, I found the mattes to feel a little puny. I will say that this assortment lends itself to both super dramatic as well as more demure looks. Illamasqua is one of those brands that is rather hit or miss in my experience, and this palette follows that pretty closely. The standout colors for me were 'Vivacity', 'Bold', and 'Distinct'.

Top to bottom: Vivacity, Bold, Distinct, Chutzpah, Zealous, and Fearless.

Top to bottom: Empower, Honour, Muse, Poise, Assured, and Spirit (it kinds of blends into my skin!).

ILIA Color Block High Impact Lipstick in 'Rosette', 4 g - Retail Value $35.00

I think this might be my very first ILIA lipstick! Unless I am forgetting something... which is entirely possible. Whatever, I loved this stuff! The color is such a pretty and wearable pink (and 'Rosette' is a perfect name for it!) and the formula is a dang dream. Smooth, creamy, great coverage, and hydrating. What more could I ask for? I am hoping to really lean back into lipstick in 2021, but until then, this will be my new Zoom meeting fave!

Here is a swatch...

And here is it on!

Cosmedix Cleansing Brush and Cosmedix Dual Sides Silicone Mask Applicator - Listed Value $29.00 (the silicone brush sells alone for $10.00)

I was super thrilled to see these were facial brushes rather than makeup brushes because that is a lot more unusual! We learned facial protocol in school with brushes but these take that to the next level. All we got was a fan brush, but this is a total upgrade. First, you have that round textured brush for cleansing. If you have never cleansed with a brush, you are going to love it. Simply apply cleanser to a dry OR damp brush (your choice!) then massage it on your face in small circles. Those bristles get everything super lathery and ensure a deep clean. The silicone tipped brush is for applying masks and one side is smooth while the other has nubs that remind me a lot of my FOREO cleansing device. Use the scrubbies to apply the mask around your t-zone and the smooth side to spread the mask all over your face. You can also use the silicone brush for cleanser too!

DOSE of Colors Single Eyeshadow in 'Nightsky', 2.2 g - Retail Value $20.00

Ever since watching The Witcher on Netflix, I have been on the hunt for Yennifer's dark green shadow. Apparently, the shade they actually used has been discontinued, but this is SO CLOSE! The base of this color is a charcoal but it is absolutely exploding with emerald green shimmer. While dark colors like this are totally out of my wheelhouse, I just had to give it a try. Because it was so dark and I was really worried about the fallout making me look like I had a black eye or two, I decided to first apply with my fingertips then blend out with a brush. Want to see? Peek below!

Ooooh.

This shadow makes me really, really miss holiday parties!! I LOVE it.

REALHER Lipliner in 'I am Confident', 0.07 g - Retail Value $12.50

REALHER Lipliner in 'Be Yourself Be RealHer', 0.07 g - Retail Value $12.50

My last item was a set of two RealHer liners. I don't use liners often, but these were so smooth and creamy that they could easily be used as all-over lip colors. The pigment level is fantastic and I liked both of the colors sent. One is a nude that is dark enough to use all over and the other is a bold berry red.

Top, 'I am confident', bottom 'Be Yourself'

Verdict: My BoxyCharm Premium had a value of $274 which is awesome for a $35 box. Since I couldn't locate it, I did have to trust that the value of that second brush equals $15 based on our info card, but that seems accurate to me. Not everything inside was a hit (I won't really use the liners and the palette was a little 'meh') but there was more than enough in here to make me very happy. Just the moody green shadow and the pink lipstick sent me over the moon, leaving a very nice cream and some new brushes to feel like a bonus. I think if I had gotten a slightly better palette this would have been one of the better Boxy Premiums I have ever gotten.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Thanks Diamond! I love it too. It was a shocker since I normally lean super natural when it comes to makeup. Means I need to branch out more!!

I love what you did with the Dose of Colors single, Megan.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the beautiful Ilia lipstick in my box. I got a rollerball of cuticle oil that leaked all over. 😂 Boxy said they’d send me another, but I haven’t received it yet. They won’t replace the Dose of Colors shadow because only the package was destroyed, not the product inside.

Noooooo I hate a leaky product. Sorry that happened to your box this month. Glad Boxy will replace, but still a ‘meh’ experience. What shade did you get in the eyeshadow?

Marion

I think it was Jackpot — it wasn’t a shade I wanted to keep, which is an extra bummer about the packaging, cause now it’s not gift able.

Wow, Meghan! You are so naturally pretty, however these products really amp up your looks. Sign me up!

I am blushing Sheri. Thank you. I think it was just really fun to play in more dramatic colors because this year has been so BLAH for makeup.

Another great review, Megan! I love the eyeshadow/lipstick look on you. But I also have to say, the nude eye look also looks fantastic. Maybe I’m just getting old, but nixing eyeshadow from my routine has been such a blessing! I save time, money, bathroom space, and have way less eye irritation. Lipstick, on the other hand, I could never get rid of! 💋👍

It feels like I haven’t gotten to wear eyeshadow at all this year unless it was for a review. Really looking forward to that changing next year, if only for fancy events! I am more likely to wear a naked eye for sure. Lipstick? ALWAYS.

Great review. I love the lipstick and Dose of Colors shadow. This look is seriously flattering. I no longer have any fomo about the eye palette. The pictures here look very different that what was presented on line at the Boxy site. I couldn’t get it during choice, however I picked it up during pop up. I haven’t received it yet and will probably be gifting it. Glad to see new brands like Ilia in the mix for November.

The palette is pretty, but for me, in a sea of palettes, it just wasn’t enough. I do think it would make a great gift if you go that route! The little single I am obsessed with though!

I got the cream and the brushes and I love them both.

I was disappointed eyeshadow wise. That palette does have great, pretty metallics but at that price point, I expected to be way more impressed. And my Dose shadow is great quality but an ugly shade especially on me. Slinky I think it’s called.

I got the cuticle oil which I also really like and the Pur palette which I decided was actually quite better than I thought it would be. So 4 out of 6 great products is awesome! I do wish Boxycharm would quit with half junky eyeshadow palettes though. I’ve gotten like 4 now I think and they have been, overall, incredibly subpar for a Premium box especially, high RVs or not. I always got fantastic, high quality eyeshadow palettes from Ipsy. Boxy, not so much but maybe it will improve for 2021.

Megan K.

Slinky does look tough to wear. Would it work as a wet liner?
I agree on the palettes. They really have to be WOWs or super unique. I would prefer a single high-quality shade over a lackluster palette any day of the week. Fingers crossed for 2021!

That night cream is fantastic! I wish I received the DOSE of Colors Eyeshadow color that was reviewed…I received one that looks like dirt (on me)…it is so bad that this is just going in the trash. The brushes are very useful, and I’m very happy to get them. The palette is OK, but I prefer Violet Voss formulations. The lipstick is horrid on me, oh well. Lastly, the brown liner looks like pooh, but the other one is a beautiful color that goes on like a dream. Overall, it’s a pretty good box.

Thanks for the tips on the brushes! I didn’t get this box, but those are great ideas for things I have at home 🙂
