Thank You To MSA’s Top Commenters of 2020!

Mallory @ MSA
ByMallory @ MSANov 17, 2020 | 72 comments

As we kick off this holiday season, we wanted to thank the most important people at My Subscription Addiction: our lovely readers, of course! We can’t thank you enough for being part of the MSA community and sharing your thoughts with us, whether as a vote in our Readers’ Choice Awards, a response to our surveys, or a comment on one of our reviews

We are continuously blown away by your endless support, and we wanted to highlight a few readers who have left upwards of 650+ comments this year alone! Read on to get to know some of our most avid commenters, and feel free to congratulate them in the comments.

Meet Our Top Commenters

We spoke to a handful of our most active users from across the country to find out more about their outside interests and love for subscriptions. Some of them have been reading MSA since 2015 or subscribe to a dozen different boxes - and one is even a Jeopardy champion!

1. Alice R.

Alice R. was born and raised in New Orleans, and now lives on a ranch in southern Mississippi, not far from the Gulf Coast. Alice and her husband, Ray, previously raised and showed Appaloosa, Arabian, and Black Angus cattle. Today, they still have her retired Appaloosa show gelding and Arabian mare, as well as a frisky Miniature Appaloosa gelding who runs the place! She is our top commenter with 1,583 comments this year alone!

Although' I've been a Grants Administrator for a private foundation for the past 21 years,  I've worn many professional hats, including: inventory control specialist for the world’s largest hardware wholesaler; long haul truck driver; store manager for the world's largest retailers; college academic administrative specialist; medical transcriptionist; and horsemanship instructor, trainer, and showman; and multi-breed show judge, among others!  I've worked since age 13. I'm 61 and looking forward to finally retiring in the next couple of years.

I love all animals and am an animal advocate and independent rescuer.  I love photography, creating all kinds of art, and beading jewelry.

My current favorite subscriptions are Potomac Bead Box, Ipsy Glam Bag Plus, Nourish, Seenewskincare, FabFitFun , and Causebox.

I learned of My Subscription Addiction two years ago while searching for skin care products. I love the MSA community for their friendly social banter and helpful suggestions!

2. Marion

Marion is a paraeducator who lives in Southern California. This year, she has left 998 comments on MSA! Outside of subscriptions, she’s also a beauty addict and sci-fi enthusiast.

My favorite subscription is Ipsy, but I also love a good Sephora Favorites kit! I also pick up 1 or 2 mystery boxes every year from Notoriously Morbid.

I've been reading MSA since 2015! I have always loved how the blog features clear, consistent photos and descriptions of box items in reviews, which makes it easier for me to determine if a subscription's content is of interest to me.

I've been on ‘swap-cation’ for quite some time, but the swap section of MSA is such a great tool for me to get the most value out of my subscriptions! The swap culture on this site is so excellent and friendly. With 414 completed swaps under my belt, I have traded back and forth with a few people so often that it sometimes feels like a penpal situation. I've even met a swapper from a neighboring city in a coffee shop to save on shipping costs, and we ended up getting drinks and chit chatting for a while!

3. Lori C.

Lori C. lives in Los Angeles and works at a nonprofit devoted to fighting homelessness and poverty. Outside of subscription boxes, she loves to travel, kayak, and go to museums and the movies. So far, she’s left 768 comments on MSA this year!

My favorite subscriptions are Ipsy and FabFitFun, but I also occasionally receive Allure, NewBeauty Test Tube, Boxycharm, Beautyfix and Glossybox. I've subscribed to as many as 12 boxes at one time! It's such a fun treat, that even being on ‘product overload’ much of the time, I don't think I could give up my subscriptions

I knew nothing about subscription boxes except for occasionally hearing about Birchbox or Ipsy when I considered subscribing to Julep in 2018 and Googled reviews for it, which led me to My Subscription Addiction. I was immediately fascinated by all the options and surprised by how many subscription boxes were both legit and great quality! Based on MSA reviews, I subscribed to Julep and Birchbox at first, followed soon after by Boxycharm, Ipsy and FabFitFun. I was pretty late to the subscription box game and often wish I had discovered them earlier!

I don't know anyone else who subscribes to any boxes, so I honestly don't know what I'd do without the MSA community. I love discussing, commiserating and sharing my thoughts and experiences as well as reading others' perspectives. MSA commenters have provided valuable feedback, instructions and promo codes that have only enhanced my subscription experience. MSA commenters have changed my opinion many, many times and provided product recommendations that have been so beneficial. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the spoilers and news, though! I try to streamline my email box, so without MSA's posts, I wouldn't know about most deals or new boxes. The spoilers are so, so helpful in deciding when to subscribe or skip a box. I can't begin to count how much money I've saved or spent well due to spoilers. I can't say enough about the reviews, either! I've so often purchased a box that I wouldn't have looked twice at because of an MSA review. Less often, but just as helpful, have been the times I was comforted that I wasn't missing out when I decided against buying a box.

4. Dean M.

Dean M. lives in Winder, GA and works as a scientific editor. She’s a "Jeopardy!" champion (season 32, 2015) and loves quiltmaking. She’s the proud mother of multiple cats and is always clamoring for Ragan and Jessica to include more photos of their cats in reviews (hint, hint). She’s left 656 comments on MSA this year!

I currently subscribe to Ipsy Glam Bag Plus (which I love) and Birchbox, as well as two subscriptions that MSA taught me about: Bespoke Post and Sips By. I rely on MSA to show me the spoilers for FabFitFun and BeautyFix for the occasional splurge.

I can't even remember how I discovered My Subscription Addiction! It must have been from Googling something about Ipsy, which was my first beauty subscription, around 2015. The most valuable thing for me about MSA is the spoilers, because spoilers (and the price) determine whether I'll buy the item. I check the MSA website several times a day, and it has introduced me to exciting subs and wonderful purchase opportunities.

What comment helped you try or learn something new this year?

I’m happy to see MSA doing something like this. It would be super awesome if the trend continued as a “monthly superstar member spotlight” kind of thing!

Hi everyone!!!

As usual, I am SO incredibly touched by all of your comments. 🙂 I am so humbled, that I truly don’t know what to say other than a big THANK YOU! and I’m so happy my posts have helped others like others’ posts have helped me. 🙂 Thank you SO much to this wonderful & very generous community! You all make MSA a fun place to visit every. single. day! 😀

MSA did reach out to me (I think I had 1,263 comment at the time of them contacting me… I had no idea!!!), but being the shy introvert that I can be at times, I didn’t feel comfortable providing certain details about myself (I guess no matter how general they could be). Mallory was super cool about it and understanding about where I was coming from, and I thank her so much for considering me for this article. 🙂

Heck- I think you should be paid by them!! You bring them soooo MANY deals and sub box news. You definitely deserve to be rewarded for all that you’ve provided to the site. I’m sure the money you’ve made for them is substantial- and I’ve always though you should receive a portion of it.

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

It is fun during those times when MSA posts something that I shared with them (even if it’s a couple of days later), and once posted it sells out within an hour or two. The power of MSA! 🙂

SquirrelyGirl

You are the best Luna 🙂 You are the true shining star of MSA <3 I always look forward to your comments

Reply ButtonReply

SquirrelyGirl

LOL You and I are so similar in that regard! I always try to balance the good and bad with every thing I face in life…all the way down to things like sub boxes and their products. I’m always asking myself whether I am giving something a fair assessment, or if it’s something that just didn’t work for me and my hella picky skin. “It didn’t work for me, but it would probably work for you” would end up being my catch phrase ;). Your positivity is one of the things that draws me to you, so don’t ever lose that quality!!!

Luna

Exactly!!! Plus, I think my reviews would typically lean toward the positive since I’m generally easy to please, and I’d never say something is a bad product or not worth its value just because it didn’t work for me since I know it could easily be someone else’s HG and works miracles for them… so my reviews would also lean more toward the diplomatic side too. 🙂 Ya, I’d be a very boring reviewer for those that like a little spice in the reviews. 😉

SquirrelyGirl

<3 <3 <3 I am with you with thinking I would be a terrible reviewer. There are only so many ways you can say "I really liked this" or "this really sucked" LOL.

Luna

Thanks so much for your kind words SquirrelyGirl! I enjoy reading your comments too! 😀

Shea

Luna, I was shocked that your name wasn’t on the list! Now I see why lol. I always look forward to seeing your comments! You always seem to have the inside scoop on boxes, advent calendars & such! I think MSA should hire you & put ya on the payroll! I’m sure we have plenty of readers that would love to see your reviews!! I know I would!

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

Thanks Shea!!!! I don’t think MSA would mind me saying this, but they actually did reach out to me inquiring to see if I’d be interested in working for them, but due to various reasons, I had to respectfully decline their offer. Searching for the inside scoop on boxes, etc. is really fun and actually quite relaxing for me, and I really enjoy being able to do it at my leisure. 🙂 Tbh, I’d probably be a horrible reviewer for MSA’s purposes since I prefer to finish a product before developing my opinion on it, and I probably wouldn’t be a very fun one for the readers since I don’t think I’d do so well on changing up ways to say something felt nice or not so nice on first impression reviews, lol.

LunaLee

When I was reading this Luna I already knew you wouldn’t be on this list, but that you would have been one of the one’s chosen, because we have similar personalities! I am the same way, I like to keep my info private and I am shy, lol. Last thing, I also love to read your comments and trust your opinions on everything. 😘

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

Thanks LunaLee!!! 🙂 I love your vibe, and sometimes I think when I read your comments that it’s something I could have written too! 😀

Sara

A very interesting read! 1/2 my comments don’t ever get posted ☹️. I don’t visit MSA like I used to after the f-o-r-u-m was shut down, I still miss it!

Jane

I agree with everyone – Luna should have received an “honorary mention” – voted MVP by readers. I love how Luna assigns values to everything – really helps to decide whether to buy or not. It really not the quantity of posts that matters but quality. Luna’s posts are always so informative, she stays on topic about the box, no empty long-winded ramblings. I am amazed how she knows about deals before anyone at MSA. So what she didn’t write an essay about herself, she still earned the “top contributor” spot & need to be listed.

Reply ButtonReply

SquirrelyGirl

I so agree with you on quality over quantity! She is also always so positive and that alone deserves it’s own special merit! I have cut wayyyyy back on my MSA time for various reasons, but I always look forward to her input. She is a gem!

Reply ButtonReply

Mallory @ MSA

Hi Jane! Thanks for your comment – we couldn’t agree more! Luna is absolutely one of our top commenters, both in quality and quantity 🙂 A few of our top commenters were not comfortable being included in any capacity, and we wanted to honor those preferences.

Haha! No surprise, Luna is super popular!
Mallory, maybe you should edit your thread to inform people that you did reach out to Luna so that they stop complaining about not seeing Luna mentioned and focus more on the 3 Stars of the show. 🙂

Pretty typical of comments on posts….such big bummers! Nice to assume that they purposely left people out, and not that there was a reason they weren’t in the post. sheesh lol

Alice

Mallory and the MSA family, thank you for inviting me to participate. I had no idea I communicated so often in the community! I love being an active member and love the camaraderie of the site. My husband had emergency heart surgery two weeks ago, so I haven’t been as active as usual during this time. He was gone and I brought him back with CPR. Had I not been home from work, I would have lost him. (It took almost a half hour for paramedics to arrive; we’re in a rural area.) Looking forward to many more years enjoyin MSA.

Yes! Luna for MSA commenter of the year! IMO quality is more important than quantity. (Also, TBH I would worry about making a list based on tons of comments for fear that people seeing my name would be like “oh, she always makes such dumb comments” or “oh, she complains about everything” LOL).
