Brown Sugar Box October 2020 "Home, Chic Home" Review

Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini magazine that highlights the theme of the box, lists the products included, and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box is the Home, Chic Home Edition. In these uncertain times home is where we all feel safe, but it can also feel constraining. This edition of the Brown Sugar Box focuses on helping subscribers create a sanctuary where they can retreat to and find peace, especially now.

Izzy & Liv "Culture, Confidence, Soul" Crewneck Long Sleeve Tee - Listed Value $28

I love this heather gray "Culture, Confidence, Soul" Crewneck Long Sleeve Tee from Izzy & Liv. It is super comfortable and cozy but still lightweight. I can wear the tee to bed and not wake up sweating in the middle of the night, or as the base layer for a stylized jean or leather jacket look and not feel like a turkey roasting. The fabric feels wonderful. With its 50% cotton and 50% polyester blend, the garment has a nice stretchiness to it that makes it perfect for lounging. I love the graphic text, boldly stating, "Culture, Confidence, Soul" on the front. I have been throwing on this tee to head out to the mailbox on chilly mornings.

Izzy & Liv "Cozy Culture" Blanket - Listed Value $35

This "Cozy Culture" Blanket from Izzy & Liv is one of my favorite items in this month's box. I love the colorful graphic comic book-like design. It screams "fun pop art" to me. This 50-inch by 60-inch plush throw blanket is super cozy, with a fleece-like lining that takes my boring brown sofa from drab to fab. It brightens up my decor and mood every morning when I curl up to watch the sunrise with a mug of steaming coffee, preparing my night owl self to face lengthy Zoom meetings with overly perky, "natural" morning people. Subscribers could have received one of nine designs: Chocolate Beauty (Teal), Beautiful Bold Sistas, Afro Chic Ponytail, Brown Sugar Roses, Geometric Goddess (Hot Pink), Brown Sugar Roses (Black), Queen Musings, Girlfriends, or Reflections. I received Afro Chic Ponytail, and I love it!

Izzy & Liv 2pc. Throw Pillow Covers - Listed Value $30

These 2-piece Throw Pillow Covers from Izzy & Liv go right along with the "Cozy Culture" blanket, giving off that Andy Warhol pop art vibe, and I am living for it. These pillow covers are the perfect way to change up the look of your bedroom, living room, or workspace, and take wherever is your peaceful sanctuary and give it a whole new feel. Most of us have been at home quite a bit, at least recently, and I've gotten tired of just about everything I own. If I had to look at the same old blue throw pillows on my bed for the thousandth day in a row, I might have screamed. It was super easy to slip on these 18-inch by 18-inch pillow covers and brighten up my space, giving me something new to enjoy. Subscribers could have received one of six sets: So Beautiful, Queen Musings, Beautiful Bold Sistas, Reflections, Chocolate Beauty (Teal), or Glow On Girl. I received Beautiful Bold Sistas. The geometric patterns, along with the bright colors, definitely pop.

Izzy & Liv "Chic at Home" Shower Curtain - Listed Value $30

Okay, this was awesome. The last thing I ever expected to receive in a subscription box was a shower curtain. So, this "Chic at Home" Shower Curtain by Izzy & Liv took me by surprise. Another home decor piece with a pop art feel, bold bright colors and a geometric pattern. It was just the thing I didn't know I needed in my life. I've had the same old plain shower curtain for quite a while now, and this piece really livened up my bathroom. Something so unexpected and yet wondrously useful made this month's Brown Sugar Box full of surprises. Subscribers could have received one of five designs: Black Onyx Beauty, Geometric Goddess (Yellow), Brown Sugar Roses (Black), Egyptian Goddesses, or Chocolate Beauty (Blush). I received Geometric Goddess (Yellow). Each shower curtain includes hooks and is made from waterproof and mildew-resistant fabric and sized 72-inch by 72-inch. If you're interested like I was, the Brown Sugar site also has select bath mat designs available to match your shower curtain. My bathroom is gonna be poppin'!

Izzy & Liv "Good Times" Picture Frame - Listed Value $16

Something we really don't have anymore is framed pictures. All my photographed memories are digital, stored on my phone or laptop. Nothing at all like my grandmother's house used to be, with framed photographs of family, friends, and holidays all around. I think that's something we should all go back to, having visible pieces of good times right in front of us. I was happy to receive this "Good Times" Picture Frame from Izzy & Liv, and excited to select the first picture I'm going to print in years to adorn this frame. This boldly patterned, 4-inch by 6-inch picture frame is a stylish addition to any office, living room, or wall. Subscribers could have received one of six styles: Royal Goddess, Geometric Goddess (Yellow), Chocolate Beauty (Blush), Paisley Beauty, Vibrant Vibes, or Pretty & Primed (Black/Red). I received Pretty & Primed (Black/Red). Each picture frame comes with wall hangings and can also be displayed tabletop.

The Verdict: I love how different this month's Brown Sugar Box was. I hope we can look forward to more home design elements incorporated in this monthly box. Each of the pieces were unique. My absolute favorite was the "Cozy Culture" Blanket in Afro Chic Ponytail. I love the bright pop art inspired design and the cozy warm plush of the blanket. The "Chic at Home" Shower Curtain was a wonderful, unexpected surprise. I love the Geometric Goddess pattern and the bright pop of yellow within the design. This pattern has definitely livened up my bathroom. I really like how comfortable and lightweight the "Culture, Confidence, Soul" Crewneck Longsleeve Tee is. It's perfect for those times when you want to layer without toasting yourself to death. The 2-piece Throw Pillow Covers in Beautiful Bold Sistas were another colorful home decor item in this month's box that really added to the theme, "Home, Chic Home." I'm also excited to have received the "Good Times" Picture Frame in Pretty & Primed. I love how eye-catching the pattern around the frame is. It's definitely a standout piece to draw your eye to whatever happy memory it's going to house. With a retail value of $139, this month's Brown Sugar Box definitely gave subscribers their money's worth. All the items were thoughtfully curated to perfectly highlight the "Home, Chic Home" theme, and help you create your best, most unique version of sanctuary.

I think all sub boxes should take a hint from this months box- when she (you? I never know if I should address this to the writer or subscribers, lol) said the shower curtain was the thing she “didn’t know she needed” I had a lightbulb moment. I need to change some things put in my house! I always wanted to have a stylish house that looked “decorated” but just kind of bought things as collections and kept it that way. I need a change!

It would be cool to have a seasonal box like this that had stuff that would perk up your rooms in a big way like the shower curtain and throw pillow covers. And I love the option to buy a matching bath mat. All the other boxes just gave neutral tchotchkes like white or beige (maybe millennial pink) candles or catchall trays. Yawn. The home decor boxes are often too pricey or “country farmhouse” style. Someone get on this, please. Lol

Awesome review and a change up of their curation this month, loving the pop-art and to have a shower curtain that’s novel. I haven’t seen a shower curtain in a sub box before.

So many times, I feel that the listed value of items in a box is exaggerated to make the box feel like a better “value.” In this example, I feel like the values listed were appropriate, and the items were unique and made for a nicely curated collection. I also really enjoyed reading this nicely written review.
