Medusa's Make-Up October 2020 "Hocus Pocus" Review

Along with my beauty items, I received an info card that details what items are in the box. I love how detailed this info card is (compared to some other boxes' info cards)!

The theme this month is "Hocus Pocus" – perfect for Halloween!

Let's unpack this box!

Medusa's Makeup Setting Spray,  1 fl oz - Retail Value $11.00

First up is the original formula of Medusa's Makeup setting spray. At first, I thought this was a sample size (it's 1 fluid ounce), but it's actually the full size that they sell on their website. It's the perfect size to tuck into your purse or travel with, so I was excited to try it out. The spray is super lightweight and dries almost instantly, which I love. I hate setting sprays that feel sticky or wet when you spray them on - I feel like it makes my mascara smear when they are like that, and this one definitely isn't, so that's a win in my book!

I used this before going to brunch this weekend, and my makeup stayed put perfectly throughout the whole morning. I even took a small post-brunch nap and while my eyeliner was smeared, nothing else had budged from my face while I slept (including the mascara shown below)!

Medusa's Makeup False Eyelashes - Retail Value $7.00

These false lashes are fluttery and not too long, which is great! I love that they come with their own bottle of glue, too. I'm not too much of a false eyelash type of girl, but these don't look too intimidating. Maybe once our stay-at-home days are over and I have events to go to again, I'll be brave and try these out!

Love Byrd Tinted Lip Balm in "Kiss" - Retail Value $8.00

Love Byrd is a sister brand Medusa's Makeup that is focused on all-natural skincare. We haven't received a Love Byrd item in a box yet, so this was an exciting item to try this month. This is a tinted lip balm in a dusty rose color. It's very moisturizing and such a lovely color - this is the best item in the box for me! My only complaint is that the size of the stick is on the larger side, so I found it hard to apply this to my lips without it getting all over. I found that if I just applied it to my lower lip and then rubbed my lips together to spread the color that worked the best!

Medusa's Makeup Witch Lash Mascara - Retail Value $12.00

Okay, guys, I'm super impressed with this mascara. I'm notoriously picky on my mascara - I want it to be thickening, lengthening, stay on all day with no smears, and not be heavy or bother my sensitive eyes. This mascara checks at least 3 of these boxes - it seems to gently lift my lashes and keep a curl better than most mascaras I've tried, and it's also fairly lengthening. The only slight imperfection is that it doesn't create a lot of thickening effect, even though it proclaims to be a thickening mascara. Applying 2-3 coats definitely helped with that, but I would say this mascara gives much more of a natural finish rather than a dramatic, super-thick lash appearance.

Cocobetty Coconut Oil Wipe - Estimated Retail Value $0.86 USD (full size of 25 wipes sells for $29.99 AUS/$21.46USD)

The extra this month is a coconut oil makeup remover wipe. It was very saturated with liquid upon taking it out of the package, and while it removed my makeup wonderfully, it left a very thick film of coconut oil on my skin. I tried to let it soak in for a few minutes before going to bed, but I ended up having to wash my face after using this because I hated the slimy feeling too much. However, if you're a person who likes using coconut oil on their face these might be worth checking out!

One thing to note - the company must have recently changed their website and branding because the Cocobetty website listed on the packaging is not correct - the website is now called Bettyface (linked above).

Here's my makeup look using the mascara and lip balm from the box this month! I tried to show how curled my lashes look after using the mascara - can you see the definition I'm getting with it? Also, the earthy rose color of the balm is my perfect fall shade, and I know I'll be reaching for this product again and again.

Verdict: I thought that this month's Medusa's Make-Up Beauty Box was the best one yet! You can never go wrong with a classic mascara, and I love the color of the lip product this month. The setting spray worked really well, and I know I'll try out the false lashes in the future. The retail value for these items comes to $38.86, which is almost double the cost of the box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Orders are generally processed within 1-3 business days, so you will likely receive October as your first box if you subscribe before the end of the month.

Value Breakdown: At $18.95 for this box, here's what you're paying for each item:

  • Setting spray - $5.36
  • Eyelashes - $3.41
  • Lip Balm - $3.90
  • Mascara - $5.85
  • Wipe - $0.42
