Love With Food Deluxe September 2020 Box Review

The box comes with a card. The cards sometimes mention themes but the snacks don't seem selected based on themes at all:

There was also some advertising material. They really seem to want me to buy wine (I don't drink...):

On to the items:

Off the Eaten Path Chickpea Veggie Crisps (1.25 oz) - Buy 6.25 oz for $3.69

This was a totally new item for me. The green bits are from peas and the purple bits are from black beans. These had a nice, crunchy texture. They were a little plain but should be great with dips. Sodium is about average for chip-type snacks and these have a little fiber and protein as well.

Zee Zee's Campfire Smores Soft Baked Bar (1.3 oz) - Buy 24 for $26.99

Zee Zee's items show up a lot in Love with Food but most of them are actually pretty good, even if they are marketed as kids' food (which I am normally not into). The marshmallow bits here are just flavored that way and are not actual marshmallows, which is great, because that makes this item vegetarian ("real" marshmallows have gelatin). I think I have preferred some of the other Zee Zee's bars a little more but this was not bad. Just don't eat a whole bunch in one sitting because one serving has 14 grams of sugar! Think of these like cookies and enjoy in moderation.

Country Archer Original Beef Stick (0.5 oz) - Buy 28 for $20.50

There are a lot of meat sticks in Love with Food, usually one per month. This exact one has shown up a few times before. If you are doing the keto or paleo diet these would be fine for you and they are also gluten-free. I am a vegetarian and my husband won't eat snacks like this so I have been saving all the ones I get from subscription boxes to mail to an omnivorous family member. The beef is grass-fed and this is free of nitrites and nitrates.

Nature Valley Crunchy Oats 'n Honey (0.74 oz) - Buy 12 Bars for $2.98

I haven't had one of these in ages but this is definitely the first type of crunchy granola bar I ever had and is the standard to which I hold all others. These taste better than I remember although they leave a lot of crumbs when you eat them. What I did not know is that Nature Valley makes 10 flavors of crunchy granola bars and if this brand is going to show up in Love with Food a lot, I would love to try some of the other flavors, as I don't think I've ever had any of them.

Kibo Chickpea Chips, Pico de Gallo (1 oz) - Buy 12,1 oz Bags for $17.99

I feel like this is a repeat item but I also review three snack subscription boxes and these are vegan so they could have come from any of those boxes in the past. I do like all the products from this brand I have tried. They don't skimp on the flavor -- you can actually taste what the package says. These have a bit of a rustic texture but I am used to that because I eat a lot of legumes and whole grains. These have a lot more protein and fiber than comparable salty snack items.

Pig Out Pigless Pork Rinds, Texas BBQ (1 oz) - Buy 24, 1 oz Bags for $47.76

I did a double-take with this package, at first I saw "pork rinds" and bemoaned that there were two non-vegetarian snacks this month, but then I saw "pigless" and remembered that I'd had these before from Vegancuts. I have never in my life eaten a "real" pork rind so it is not something I felt I was missing from my diet. These are mostly rice chips but with a fair amount of added pea protein; they are lightweight and crunchy. This flavor is pretty good; I'd be interested in trying some of the others.

Cooper Street Orange Cranberry Twice-Baked Cookies (1 oz) - Buy 4, 18 oz Bags for $34.99

I was trying to remember where I'd heard of this brand before, and it finally dawned on me that it was in a past Love with Food box, where we received this absolutely delicious item. Anyway, I'm not quite as big of a fan of the twice-baked cookie texture but I think these could be improved by dunking in a hot beverage (isn't that what biscotti is for anyway?). The flavor is great, definitely identifiable with just the right amount of sweetness.

Crunchsters Barbeque (1.3 oz) - Buy 6 Bags for $9.99

I think I have had these in a previous Love with Food box but I don't mind getting them again. They are mostly sprouted mung beans but they are not too hard. I suggest pouring into a small bowl and eating with a spoon as the pieces are just super tiny; this is not really finger food. In general, I like salty, BBQ flavored snacks, and these were no exception.

Craize Seeded Toasted Corn Crackers (1 oz) - Buy 12, 1.75 oz Pouches for $31.14 (found here for $19.98)

These have been making the subscription box rounds lately. These come in all kinds of interesting flavors and formulations (like with guava or coconut) but these seeded ones are a little plainer. The corn flavor is definitely noticeable. These are stiff and would be great with a spread or you could even make hors d'oeuvres with them as the base for something fancier if social distancing ever ends.

Purely Elizabeth Ancient Grain Granola Bar, Original (1.06 oz) - Buy 5 Bars for $5.99

These are gluten-free and vegan and they are the second type of hard granola bars we received this month (the Nature Valley ones are neither GF nor vegan). So if you have dietary restrictions this may provide an alternative that could work for you. (Note: this is not the best subscription for you if you have a lot of allergies or are vegan. Most items are usually OK for vegetarians, but not 100% of them.) Anyway, I find this to be sweet more than salty. This is a repeat item (item, brand, and flavor), for what it's worth. These come in several other flavors and I would definitely be interested in trying those in a future box.

Sun-Maid Sour Raisin Snacks, Blue Raspberry (0.35 oz x 2) - Buy 7, 0.7 oz Bags for $6.99

I can see how something like this might be useful in getting kids to eat raisins, which are definitely not something I wanted as a kid. Truth be told, I kind of like them myself, although I voluntarily eat a fair amount of dried fruit. I don't know that the color additive is doing them any favors, though, as it kind of looks like someone bled all over the raisins. We received these same raisins last month.

180 Snacks Almond Rice Pops with Blueberries (0.5 oz) - Buy 15 oz for $18

This is also a (multiple) repeat item. What I kind of like about these is that they are lightweight and not very dense, so you can feel like you are eating a lot without getting very many calories. The blueberry flavor is distinctly blueberry, too, not just generically fruity, which is kind of funny because according to the ingredients list the "blueberries" are actually cranberries soaked in blueberry juice.

Nature's Garden Cranberry Health Mix (1.2 oz) - Buy 42 Bags for $34.99

This is fairly standard trail mix that I have apparently had before (it was in my Google search results autocomplete list and the link was purple, indicating I'd already visited a page for this product in the past). All the ingredients seem good quality and unlike some other trail mixes I've received in snack boxes, this was not dominated by one particular ingredient but was better mixed.

Taali Water Lily Pops, White Cheddar (0.8 oz) - Buy 10 Bags for $22.49

These were a pleasant surprise. There were some water lily pops going around last year that I did not like at all in any flavor I received so I thought maybe I just didn't like water lily pops. But these were pretty good. They are flavored with real cheese and because they are not made from flour (like a lot of rice and cassava snacks) they don't get all stuck in your teeth in quite the same way.

Belgian Boys Mini Cookie Stash, Chocolate Chip (1 oz) - Buy 40 Assorted Pouches for $40

This is another repeat item. I was poking around on this brand's website and found out that they actually make a lot more products besides just these little cookies. I would love to see some of the other items in a future box, just for the sake of variety. There's much less risk placing a large order from a specific brand website if you know you like several of their offerings! Anyway, these are pretty standard hard chocolate chip cookies. They tasted fresh so even though we've had them in this subscription before, it's probably not old stock being offloaded.

Verdict: There were 16 items in the September 2020 Love With Food Deluxe Box for an average value of about $1.25 per item. There were some new items that I was definitely a fan of (chickpea veggie crisps, water lily pops) but there were quite a few repeat items as well. I don't mind getting lots of items from the same brand but what I think would be great would be to vary the items a little more. They do this with Zee Zee's and I appreciate that, but if they could also do it with, say, Purely Elizabeth and Belgian Boys, etc. that would be nice and would probably lead me to purchase more from brand websites.
