Winc July 2020 Review

When you sign up to join Winc, you take a six-question palate profile quiz to help determine your taste in wine. Based on your answers, Winc makes bottle recommendations for you every month. You can go along with their recommendations, choose your own bottles from their regularly changing selection, or skip the month completely. You can also take the palate profile test as often as you’d like.

The bottles are shipped in an upright cardboard box that has molded pieces to hold them in place. This helps prevent the bottles from bashing into one another during transport. The box is rather sturdy and has a convenient handle that makes it easy to carry.

This month’s delivery came with a gift card for Green Chef. Check out Marne’s review here, and Becca’s reviews of the keto option here.

2019 The Bluffer Valdiguié — $16.99 (or $14.99 through the subscription)

Paso Robles, California

Body: Medium

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 13.5%

Winemaking: Low-sulfur, low sugar, sustainable

I received a previous vintage of this awhile back and it was one of my favorite reds from Winc, ever. I was blown away by how it tasted like straight-up fruit juice and have pined for it since. This 2019 variety didn’t quite knock my socks off like the last time but it was still delicious. If you’re into fruit-forward reds with a welcoming dryness, this one’s for you. Even if you shy away from dry wines, I think this one’s worth a shot. Plus the price point isn’t too shabby!

2019 Honey Beast Viognier — $17.99 (or $15.99 through the subscription)

California

Body: Light

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 13%

Winemaking: Low-sugar, low sulfur

I was so excited to see this bottle in my delivery round-up. Honey + wine? Don’t threaten me with a good time. Imagine my shock when the first sip I took was super bitter. Never have I experienced a wine with such a bitter front profile, but it eventually mellowed out into a soft honeysuckle-like finish. Maybe that was the lemon rind note coming through? I’m not so sure, but I was surprised to find this bottle wasn’t anything like I’d expected. That’s not to say it wasn’t fully enjoyed until the last drop, though. Wine just has a way of disappearing in my home…

2019 Capuchon Rosé $18.99 (or $16.99 through the subscription)

Central Coast, California

Body: Light

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 12.7%

Meet my favorite of the month, dear readers. This rosé is exactly the thing I’ve needed recently after making some huge life decisions. 2020 just doesn’t seem to stop, does it? I picked up on a hefty strawberry note, though there are certainly some other fruits in there, too. I also appreciate how Winc’s dry varieties haven’t been too dry for me personally—I like to hover somewhere between lightly sweet and just a touch dry. Would certainly reach for this one again, personal crises or not.

2019 Wonderful Wine Co. Malvasia Bianca $19.99 (or $17.99 through the subscription)

Body: Medium

Sweetness: Dry

Alcohol: 12.8%

Winemaking: Vegan, eco-friendly, natural, sustainable

Ah yes, the fabled orange wine from The Wonderful Wine Co.—Winc’s proprietary, sustainable offshoot that I enjoyed quite a bit last month. I was hoping to see this one pop up in my box sooner than later. The orange color means it’s a white wine made in the style of a red. The taste was as unique as its hue, with grapefruit and a little bit of citrus coming to the front, and a little minerality at the end. Delicious!

Verdict: Winc has been one of my favorite subscriptions for a long time and the fondness only grows with the addition of The Wonderful Wine Co. Even though the Honey Beast wasn’t entirely my speed, it did not go to waste, and I really loved everything else that came in my delivery. That orange wine was super fun and pretty tasty to boot! Without the subscription, my order totals to $73.96, but with a membership, it comes to $65.96—an $8 savings. I’m pretty committed to staying indoors and socially distanced, so I do appreciate the convenience of Winc more than ever.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Since Winc allows you to choose your wine, you can get any combination you’d like any month. Sign up today and curate your own selection, or let them choose a few bottles for you.
