KnitCrate Membership August 2020 Review
KnitCrate Membership is the flagship box from the KnitCrate brand. In my opinion, it’s the best box to start with if you’re looking to expand your knitting knowledge or expand your yarn stash! The yarn they send is from one of their in-house brands, and it’s always very high quality.
A note on shipping: KnitCrate is experiencing some minor shipping delays. The August crate did not start shipping until the very end of the month. The September crate is expected to ship on the normal schedule at the beginning of the month.

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, August 2020 - Retail Value $40.00
KnitCrate boxes always include a booklet that goes into details on the yarn sent, patterns for the month, and extra little articles. I love these booklets and have quite the collection on my bookshelf!
KnitCrate has "Color Vibe" options, where you get to choose which color family you would like to receive. Coordinating with those three color options are three colorway combinations available this month: Midsummer Rose (Energize Me), a deep ruby pink; Sandstones (All Natural), a pale pink; and Oasis (Chill Out), a minty seafoam green.
KnitCrate always sends a knitting pattern and a crochet pattern to go along with the yarn, which is always something I really appreciate about the box. The knitting pattern and the crochet pattern this month are variations on the same theme - they are both short-sleeved shrugs - which I always love because it means you can create the featured project no matter which craft you prefer to do! I especially adore the oversized crochet cardigan/shrug - I think I may have to pick up some extra yarn to make this design!
The featured maker this month is the Our Maker Life team, and the patterns were designed by two of the members of this team. I attended the OML event in Calgary last summer, and it was one of the best trips I've ever been on - I highly recommend checking this organization out if you are an enthusiastic yarn lover! I had tickets for the 2020 event (which I believe this box was curated to coincide with), but unfortunately, like so many other events this year, it was postponed until 2021.
The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for September - it will be “Paradiso” and I can’t wait to see what gorgeous colors will come from this palette!

Now, onto the good stuff - the yarn!

Vidalana Linen Jewel by KnitCrate in Sandstones - Retail Value $56.00 ($28.00 per skein)
The yarn this month is such a fun new blend of fibers for us to try! It's 50% superwash merino, 30% linen, and 20% silk - you can really feel and see the linen content in the strands, which makes it super lightweight and breathable, but the merino and silk give the fiber such a soft and drapey feel. I love this blend so much and really want to make a summer top in it at some point!
I received the All Natural color, Sandstones, which is a light pink. It's much more of a baby pink than I was expecting based on the preview photos - it's super pretty still, but I would prefer more of a blush pink or beige-y toned pink if I was making a garment for myself to wear.
The yarn is a fingering weight, and each skein contains 400 yards (365 meters) in 100 grams. Each subscriber received two skeins of one of the colors shown above.
KnitCrate Coaster
The extra this month is a cork coaster, which I absolutely adore! It says "*Sip 1, stitch 1, repeat from *" which is such a clever take on knitting pattern directions. This coaster is now living on the desk in my craft room, and it's the perfect resting spot for your beverage of choice while you're knitting or crocheting.
As I mentioned above, I didn't think I would get much wear out of a garment in this color of pink. However, I think it would work well as an accesssory, so I searched around for a suitable pattern for it. I stumbled across this (free!) Purl Soho pattern for the Open Air Wrap, and thought it looked perfect.

Here's my progress on this wrap! I think the linen and silk content in this yarn really suit this open, airy lace stitch so well! The wrap is a little bit slow going because it's mainly doing purl 2 together and yarn overs, but I think it's worth it since it's such a pretty texture! Now I just need a springtime wedding invitation so I can wear this beautiful wrap for an appropriate occasion!
Verdict: I thought this was such a great KnitCrate box! I loved getting to try out this new yarn base, and I always love blends that are new to me. Even though the color wasn't my absolute favorite, I was able to find a project I really enjoy and am excited about. If you are a knitter or crocheter who is open to trying new types of yarn, this would be a great subscription box to check out! For $24.99, we received two skeins of yarn, a pattern booklet with 5 patterns, and a coaster for a total estimated retail value of $96.00. I think this is an amazing value for what you receive, since high-end, premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.
A few other things that are good to know: If you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 15th) before the subscription renews on the first. They then release all the details on the yarns and patterns on the 1st of the month. September's reveal post is here. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month.
