Green Kid Crafts "Insects" September 2020 Box Review

This month we received a postcard describing the "Kitchen Table Steam" activities they offer on their website coupled with this box. I signed up for this and love the supplemental videos, live events, and new activity ideas they send. I highly recommend this as it is no extra cost!

Each month we receive a beautifully illustrated pamphlet that is jam-packed with information and instructions for all of the month's projects. Our theme this month was "Insects," so it specifically included introduction info, 4 projects, an anatomy chart, a build a story, and bonus materials. I love that this booklet describes why insects are so important, and how they give us extra activities we can do to keep the theme going! We raised and released 12 Monarch butterflies this summer, so we couldn't wait to dig into these bug-themed projects!

I love how much Hank enjoys to read this pamphlet! Charlie likes to listen, and check out the monthly items at the same time.

This month we received an "Entomology Expert" badge to attach to our badge chart. My...what big eyes you have!!!

Project 1: Bug Magnifying Jar Project

Magnifying Jar

Our first project was a doozy! We received a bug jar with a magnifier lid, filled with toy bugs!! To start the project, we used the ladybug stickers and decorated the outside of our jar. Then we went on a bug scavenger hunt! (They even added holes to the lid to allow us to observe the bugs for an extended period of time without hurting them!)

Hank and Charlie were thrilled to get this magnifying jar filled with bugs! Not only were they adorable, but some of the ladybugs and butterflies were functional as erasers too! After decorating our jar, we headed outside to enjoy the last of our 70 degree days and filled our jar with all sorts of bugs. The flies were out warming themselves, so that made an easy and exciting catch! We also found ourselves a few spiders, an ant, and a grasshopper! Of course, we had to take a second for a bug catching selfie!! Charlie just couldn't get enough of that fly though!!!

Project 2: Chromatography Butterflies

For our second project, we received these GIANT coffee filters, chenille stems, and markers to create chromatography butterflies. See how they turned out below!

To create our chromatography butterflies, we used a marker to draw a thick circle of color in the middle of each filter. Experimenting a little bit, we added multiple colors to see what would happen. Once the marker was applied, I used a pencil to write what colors were used and where. Folding it into a cone shape, we put the cone in the water without touching the colored circle to the water. We then watched the color move up the filter! A magic trick happened: different colors came out of each color!!! From black, we see pink and blue, and from green came blue! How cool!! Not only was this project fun, but adding the pipe cleaners once the filters dried really turned them into cute decorations. The only suggestion I have is to go bigger with the circle and don't start so close to the center. I wish our butterflies were a bit more colorful throughout, but am pleased with the color combos and the excitement of this project!

Project 3: Beehive Craft

Our third project included a paper lantern, wooden bee stickers, and paper! (I love how cute this turned out!)

The beehive project was probably the simplest one this month but in my opinion the cutest! The boys were arguing about who gets the beehive in their room, so guess where it is? MY room!! Hahaha!

Project #4: Insect Sculptures

Wikki-Stix 8 pack - Buy a party favor pack for $12.95

We LOVE Wikki-Stix!! I have purchased these in the past to keep my boys busy during long road trips, and they are a blast! While they are simply string dipped in wax, they can be manipulated into just about any shape and form. We couldn't wait to create our insect sculptures with these.

We had a really fun time creating bug sculptures all while trying to guess what the others were making. Not only is it fun to sculpt with these sticks, but my kindergartener loves shaping them into letters too! Great for motor skill building!

After our major projects were finished, we sat down and did the "Mad Libs." While my kids grumble a bit when trying to come up with verbs and adjectives, they can't get enough of the final product and asked me to read this about 5 times!

On the opposing side of the story, they included a worksheet in which you had to match the word to the appropriate anatomy on a bee. While it was a little tricky, Hank figured it out and felt kind of like a big deal doing and "anatomy" worksheet.

Verdict: This month's Green Kid Crafts was right up our alley. We love insects, and as I said above, our fascination with butterflies really kept us busy this summer! This month we only received 4 projects but found them to be really engaging, fun, and cute. This month's curation was one of my favorites yet, and while I found this month's quality of products to be a step up from last month, I'd like to see a couple more project items included to hit the $29.95 (plus free shipping) price point. I wonder what next month's theme might be...
