Birchbox is one of the original beauty subscription boxes and is a great way to discover new makeup, hair care, and skincare products without breaking the bank. I received one of the two curated Clean Beauty options.

FYI: Starting in June 2020, in addition to the surprise sample box option, there will be two curated boxes offered in greater quantities than the previous curated options: The Clean Beauty Box and the Katia’s Picks box. Get all the details here.

Birchbox Review September 2020

As always, this month's Birchbox came with an info card that lists the products on the front, with a Birchbox Tip listed on the back.

IT Cosmetics Secret Sauce Moisturizer, 7 mL - Estimated Value $7.93 (Buy a full-size 60 mL for $68.00)

IT Cosmetics is a great brand. I love how all of their products cater to every skin type. I love everything about this IT Cosmetics Secret Sauce Moisturizer, from the fabulous packaging to the weightless, quick-absorbing formula. The moisturizer has a light floral scent that I'm not super stoked about but it makes up for it by providing incredible hydration and smooth, soft feeling skin. I applied this product after using my cleanser and applying my serums and it left my skin feeling hydrating and looking radiant. The product is a little thick and even though it absorbs quickly, there was a slight oily feel upon first applying. Designed by plastic surgeons, this product is formulated with a secret sauce fermented complex, hydrolyzed collagen and peptides, licorice root, vitamin C, and more!

ARROW Color Enhancing Lip Balm in Berry, 4 g - Full-Size! $15.00

This ARROW Color Enhancing Lip Balm in the shade "Berry" is a unique moisturizing product that reacts to the pH level of your skin and enhances your individual lip color. It's science, people! SCIENCE! I love how this product creates a unique color for everyone based on the pH level of their skin. When I applied to my lips, the balm slid on creamy and smooth, making my lips feel hydrated like a chapstick or lip mask would, but when I went to the mirror, I noticed that it did indeed create a lovely juicy berry tint that looked very healthful and natural. Formulated with mango seed butter, camellia seed oil, and carnauba wax, this balm tackles the challenge of hydrating and protecting lips without leaving behind an irritating stickiness or greasy feel. In my opinion, this product is perfect for the lovely people that like to look good without a whole lot of fuss and fanfare, just an extra oomph to the lips, a little va-voom to the eyelashes, and you're ready to go.

NatureLab TOKYO Perfect Shine Clarifying Scalp Scrub, 1 oz- Estimated Value $2.00 (Buy a full-size 8.1 oz for $16.00)

I am a huge fan of scalp scrubs, especially when I am wearing my hair in a protective style as I tend to get product buildup on my scalp and at my roots. NatureLab TOKYO's Perfect Shine Clarifying Scalp Scrub is an incredible product. I've purchased this product before, I've received it in a subscription box before, and I'm thrilled to receive it again. This scrub smells absolutely divine and is paraben-free and color-safe. It felt great to massage into my scalp and left my hair feeling amazingly clean and hydrated. Once you start massaging the exfoliant into your scalp, it quickly turns into a foamy consistency that can be easily rinsed out. Formulated with gentle exfoliating sugar crystals, probiotic sake water, and hyaluronic acid, this scrub got rid of my product buildup, hydrated my scalp, and left my roots soft and shiny.

JUARA Candlenut Hydrating Shower Gel, .34 oz- Estimated Value $0.78 (Buy a full-size 12 oz for $28.00)

I'm so excited to see a shower product in a subscription box. There will always be some bath accessory, bomb, salt, oil, but let's face it; how many of us enjoy baths or have the luxury to be soaking in a tub on a regular basis? Shower products are much more useful and practical in my opinion and this JUARA Candlenut Hydrating Shower Gel is wonderful. It smells delicious, a hint of the tropics, a little sweet and sunny. It works up into a nice rich lather and gently rinses off impurities without leaving a film or stripping your skin. Formulated with candlenut oil (you deserve a prize if you know what that is) to help hydrate and moisturize skin. The only downside I saw with this product was the size of the sample. I was seriously able to wash half my body with this small tube. That could potentially be my fault as I'm known to be very generous with the quantity of product I use. Anyway, this was a good thing that was great while it lasted and I'm seriously considering purchasing a full-size bottle.

Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Porefining Face Mask, 13 g - Estimated Value $10.62 (Buy a full-size 60 g for $49.00)

OMG! OMG! OMG! Instagram has been hardcore advertising this Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Porefining Face Mask to me for the past few months. I've been wanting to try it but am too cheap to make the purchase myself, so I'm super excited to have received a sample to test out the product in this month's Birchbox. I popped this bad boy in my skincare fridge before applying and the smooth, creamy clay felt wonderful chilled. This mask did a wonderful job of making my skin feel tight without drying it out. After rinsing, my face definitely felt tighter and looked brighter! Formulated with Australian pink clay, kakadu plum, and mangosteen, this mask works to purify, tighten pores, even out skin tone, and repair damaged cells. All in just ten minutes!

(MALIN+GOETZ) Grapefruit Face Cleanser, 0.5 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.25 (Buy a full-size 8 fl oz for $36.00)

This (MALIN+GOETZ) Grapefruit Face Cleanser has a delicate citrus scent and a light, almost gel-like texture. It made my skin feel clean, very clean, but not dry or irritated. I'm not a huge fan of scented facial cleansers but with the amino acid base of this cleanser and the natural anti-bacterial grapefruit to prevent breakouts, I'm definitely going to give it a chance. The product turns into a gentle foam that deeply cleanses and gently tones, leaving your face prepped and ready to apply serum and moisturizer. This product contains real grapefruit extract, so if you are sensitive to any form of citrus, you may want to be careful and patch test this particular product before applying to your face.

Verdict: I enjoyed this month's Birchbox! I think they included a lot of unique and trendy products. Of course, I am super stoked about the Insta-famous Sand & Sky Australian Pink Clay Porefining Face Mask. I'm so happy I got to try it and now I have major FOMO about not owning a full size myself. Another great product I enjoyed was the NatureLab TOKYO Perfect Shine Clarifying Scalp Scrub. It's a great product that I have enjoyed in the past and I'm happy to receive again. The JUARA Candlenut Hydrating Shower Gel is another standout for me. I am excited to receive a shower product; I just wish the sample had been a little more substantial so I could've cleaned the other half of my body, lol. It smells wonderful and is super hydrating. The ARROW Color Enhancing Lip Balm in Berry was very unique. I love how it creates and enhances your personal lip color naturally through pH levels! The IT Cosmetics Secret Sauce Moisturizer is a great high-end product to include in this box. A wonderful product from the fabulous packaging to the revolutionary formula. Lastly, the (MALIN+GOETZ) Grapefruit Facial Cleanser; it cleans deeply and tones all in one go. I appreciate how it left my face feeling incredibly clean and soft without leaving behind that tight, dry feeling that comes with stripped skin. The total retail value of this box is $38.58. I think that's quite nice for this $15 box.

Does that Pink Sky mask smell of sulphur to anyone else. I just can’t tolerate it.

I got the exact same box! I feel dumb though, because I purchased the Arrow lip balm as an add-on and then also got it in my box. It’s a nice balm, but I don’t need two. (And the free cookies weren’t even very good!) Also, I loved that the box this month opens like a drawer. Hope to see more of those in the future!

My Birchbox was very similar, haven’t tried much yet but that scalp scrub smells amazing. And I thought that the box itself was adorable and different with the tassel pull drawer. Didn’t expect that.
