BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the medium size, which is recommended for dogs 20-50 lbs. We recently changed the size because Tucker, our Standard Poodle, is the most playful pup in the house when it comes to toys.

FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug, and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

August 2020 BarkBox "Fairground Hounds" Review

The details behind our items this month were printed inside, on the box lining.

The August box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

Tucker is always excited when a new BarkBox arrives!

A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Fair Day Duck Treats, 4.5 oz - Retail Value $5.00

Duck treats do well in our house. I mean, all treats do. But duck seems to be extra beloved! These rectangular pieces aren't hard, but I could see some dogs having trouble with them if they have sensitive or missing teeth. I ripped them into smaller portions for Piper for this reason. Otherwise, these were a big hit!

The bag opened, and I immediately had everyone's attention.

Simple Duck Cuts Treats, 4.5 oz - Retail Value $5.00

These treats were almost identical to the first bag in shape and duckiness. If my pups didn't love them so much I would have been bummed to see less variety, but honestly, the dogs don't care at all.

Charlie is a duck man.

Skwee-Ball Toy - Retail Value $10.00

I used to LOVE skeeball as a kid! It is something I associate more with the arcade than the fair, but that's ok. The larger portion of the toy is filled with crinkle and a squeaker. The orange bungee cord is really fun to play tug of war with and it slides back and forth through the main body of the toy.

The tugging ticket part of this toy was loads of fun.

Tucker is usually the tug of war winner.

Charlie usually tries but quickly gives up!

Escaped Goat Toy - Retail Value $10.00

This goat was much more of a Tucker sized toy because the main body is a really hard round ball which the little ones couldn't quite get their mouths around. His head is a loud squeaker and his ears are furry!

Tucker saw the goat's hair and was immediately interested.

He did manage to remove one of the ears so far. Sorry goat!

Thinkers Chew

Another secret Tucker happy stick! As usual, I am stashing this for him to enjoy when he is solo, since the seniors can't really make good use of it anymore. He loves these!

Verdict: I liked this fair-themed BarkBox a lot, even if it wasn't one of my absolute favorites. The toys were still fun, and the treats were presumably yummy by all reactions! This is such a fun delivery each month for my dogs. They know what the box looks and smells like at this point, and though they are (mostly) polite about it, sitting still is hard for them! A box that brings them such happiness each month makes me really happy, too.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. Customer care let us know that your first box will now always be either their Welcome Box or the current month’s box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.

Value Breakdown: At $35/month + free shipping for this box, each of the 5 items has an average cost of $7.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I’m so impressed with Barkbox customer service. I live in an area that was devastated by Hurricane Laura and we will be without power/water for 2-4 weeks. I received an email from Barkbox a day or two after the storm expressing their condolences and wanting to know if I needed to put my September box on hold or if I wanted it shipped to a different address. I wasn’t even to a point where I was thinking that far in advance so it meant a lot to have them reach out first and be on top of everything!

Wow, that’s awesome service on their part!

So sorry you have to deal with the effects of the hurricane, on top of everything else going on in the country.
