Brown Sugar Box July 2020 "The HERitage Edition” Review

Each Brown Sugar Box includes a mini magazine that highlights the theme of the box, lists the products included, and offers interesting and inspiring articles. This month’s box is the HERitage Edition; it explores the values, traditions, artifacts, and cultural expressions that make Black women's DNA spectacular and special. I am all for this. As a Black woman living in America, I have rarely felt spectacular or special, and I love that the Brown Sugar Box is bringing that experience to our community.

Izzy & Liv "Culture, Confidence, Soul" T-Shirt - Listed Value $25

This salmon-colored Izzy & Liv "Culture, Confidence, Soul" T-shirt has the profile of a beautiful woman in a head wrap fitted into an outline of the motherland, Africa. I love this design so much; it speaks to something deep in my soul. The cursive text reads, "Culture, Confidence, Soul," reiterating that you ARE the culture, you HAVE the confidence, and you CREATE the soul. A beautiful and positive message for yourself and any other woman who reads it. The fabric is light and cool, perfect for a hot day. My one recommendation — order a size up as this salmon tee runs small and is 100% cotton.

Izzy & Liv "Ase Accents" African Print Sunglasses & Case - Listed Value $26

These adorable "Ase Accents" African Print Sunglasses & Case were cleverly included in this month's Brown Sugar Box to block out the "shade" that everyone is throwin'. The sunglasses and case are shatter-resistant with polycarbonate lenses and the pouch is 100% neoprene. The African print around the rim of the sunglasses add a special touch, and the cat-eye shape is very flattering. I love these sunglasses and will get a lot of use out of them. The case is also very convenient to protect the lenses from scratches or dust while the sunglasses are not being worn. I received my sunglasses and case in red/teal. Subscribers could have received one of five prints: zebra, red/teal, coral/yellow, green/teal, and red/gold.

Izzy & Liv "Wrapped in Beauty" Elastic Headband - Listed Value $15

This product has to be my favorite item in this month's box. The Izzy & Liv "Wrapped in Beauty" Elastic Headband, in collaboration with waxandwonder.com, is cute and chic with an eye-catching pattern. The headband is machine washable, fully absorbent, and 100% durable cotton. I've always shied away from headbands because I had a big head; in middle school, the mean girls used to call me "Blow Pop," and most headbands are too tight and give me a headache. This headband comfortably wraps around your head and the elastic makes for a perfect fit, not too loose or too tight. I am thrilled to have this as an option for my on-the-go hairstyles. Subscribers could have received one of two styles: tie-on or elastic. I received elastic. These bright headbands came in one of four colors: pink/blue, green/pink, aqua/navy blue, and white/blue. I received aqua/navy blue.

Izzy & Liv "Hues of Heritage" Print Canvas Bag - Listed Value $39

Izzy & Liv's "Hues of Heritage" Print Canvas Bag was featured in one of four prints: Black Paisley, Safari Wild Child, Tribal Queen, or Pink & Poppin'. I received Pink & Poppin'. The bag is spacious with an inside pocket and solid gold-colored hardware. It also came with an attachable shoulder strap. The bag is cute but not really my style. To me, it looks more mature than I would choose for myself, so I gave it to my mother and she thinks it's the greatest thing. She pulled out a big pink church hat and her Sunday best to go with the bag and took herself to her drive-in church service. If you are one for colorful, chic patterned bags, you will definitely love this purse as a bright accent piece to your summer wardrobe.

Izzy & Liv "Nubian Royalty" Tribal Card Set - Listed Value $6

These Izzy & Liv "Nubian Royalty" Tribal Cards, made in partnership with AfricanAncestry.com, are a unique and enlightening addition to this month's box. Each card highlights a different part of Africa and the culture and history of the people that lived there. On the front are beautifully illustrated depictions of ancestral African women in their traditional garb. When you flip the card over, there's detailed information on their culture, traditions, style, and history. I love the informative detail highlighting historical facts that I had forgotten or never learned. The tribal cards come in a set of four, featuring the Zulu Women of South Africa, the Fulani Women of West African, the Kikuyu Women of East Africa, and the Amazigh Women of North Africa.

The Verdict: This month's Brown Sugar Box was more of an experience, with each item selected to transport your mind to the African continent in honor of HERitage and ancestral DNA. My absolute favorite item in the box was the "Ase Accent" African Print Sunglasses & Case. I think the pattern is beautiful and the sunglasses are sturdy and shatter-resistant. The "Wrapped in Beauty" Elastic Headband is also another great product I'm excited to have received. I love that it is styled to be a comfortable fit for people with a lot of hair and protective styles to easily slip on and look cute even without a long haircare routine. I absolutely love the design and message of the "Culture, Confidence, Soul" tee and I'm excited to wear it. The "Nubian Royalty" Tribal Card Set is the most unique product in this month's box, in my opinion. I love that it was curated with the goal of enlightening women of our African HERitage. The "Hues of Heritage" Print Canvas Bag was not my style, but I'm happy that my mom is enjoying it. All in all, I have to say, this is a different and intriguing Brown Sugar Box, and I live for it!

Great review & good looking box. I always love the shirts. Did this box have a price or shipping increase? I’ve been watching it for a while and didn’t recall the price.

Does the box call itself a subscription for women of colour, rather than black women? Seems needlessly confusing.

Hey D, I feel like they say women of color to include bi-racial black women as well. Many women identify as black while also identifying with other ethnicities that make up who they are. I myself am First Nation, African American, and Lithuanian, I identify as black but am also a WOC. Inclusion is the goal and WOC is more encompassing of us all in every glorious shade of melanin.
