Spiritú Summer 2020 Review

The box included a fold-open booklet with all of our included items, retail values, and more info on the brands.

This small card placed at the top of the box mentions that the contents of this box support over 50 Latina entrepreneurs. It also has more info on this month's box artist: Tania Peregrino. This illustration graced the very first Spiritu box!

Let's peek at what's inside!

Malinalli Art You Can Wear Hand Woven Colorful Clutch – Retail Value $25.00

After this summer, I feel like I'll have a nice assortment of handmade clutches, for sure. This one feels different from the others I have received because it is smaller and certainly more colorful! Handmade by a family of artisans in Chilapa, Guerrero, this clutch feels so festive! I can totally see myself wearing this with a more simple black midi dress for a wedding in the fall. This bag has enough room for the essentials: cellphone, lippie, compact, and some hand cream. It is really lightweight but doesn't feel fragile.

I would have stashed my phone into it for this shot but I use my phone to take the images, so you see my struggle!

Rizos Curls Hydrating Shampoo + Deep Conditioner Travel Duo – Listed Value $13.98

Designed to nourish all hair types but to especially enhance hair with waves, curls, and coils, this duo is free of sulfates, silicones, and parabens. It is also cruelty-free! I have thicker, drier hair with a slight wave that I let air dry, AKA I sleep on it wet. While this sometimes works out, I would like to create more of a healthy and cared for sort of wave, so this duo filled with olive oil, shea, coconut oil, and moringa certainly looked appealing to me! I found the shampoo to be super gentle, but also effective. My hair feels soft but not slick after rinsing it out. The conditioner was SO good to my hair! It is a very thick cream and I only needed a little to coat my strands and ends. It left them super soft, extra shiny, and significantly less tangled after air drying. My waves also looked great, with the same sort of soft curve happening but less frizz, so you could actually see them. Both of these bottles smell great too! Kind of tropical, but in a sophisticated way. I really like this brand!

Baiser Beauty Formula N°16 Third Eye Roll-On, 10 mL – Retail Value $65.00

I have loads of eye creams, but not as many eye oils. The rollerball applicator makes this such an easy nightly step! Inside there is a blend of lavender, German and Roman Chamomile, and Cyprus essential oils in a jojoba oil base. There is also a round chunk of blue sodalite inside. While I do personally love lavender oil in skin products, I also know some people have negative reactions to it, especially around an area as sensitive as your eye. I found it also works really well as a cuticle oil and general dry spot moisturizer, though!

Richer Poorer Smiles Ankle Socks – Retail Value $12.00 (currently sold out)

I am a '90s kid who grew up wearing neon smiley faces on her shirts while lugging around Lisa Frank school supplies. Now I find my closet is actually super minimal, but the combo of that nostalgic smile on such a great pair of minimal ankle socks makes me SO happy! The socks themselves are a soft and kind of grey lilac shade that is already in heavy rotation in my wardrobe. The bright yellow embroidered smile is just the right amount of quirk to really make these work for me, and I seriously just love them. If they weren't sold out I would buy a few more and make these a total thing in my weekly looks.

Handmade Woven Earrings From Honduras – Listed Value $12.00

These are a repeat back from the Fall 2019 box, but at least I received a different color. I thought these were cute back then and I still think they are pretty darling, especially if you like smaller earrings or studs. I love handmade earrings and these are so small and the weaving is so intricate. They are a much more subtle design, but I think they are beyond adorable with a top knot, especially in this hot pink shade.

Cute!

The Latinx Poetry Project Poetry Anthology - Listed Value $24.99

I don't know a ton about poetry but it is hard not to be sucked into a book filled with passionate voices creating poems about family, trauma, politics, and empowerment. The voices inside feel raw, emotional, and utterly honest. Here is a snippet from one of my favorites by Shireen Alihaji:

"They never pick us,"

said the dandelion.

"That's why we grow

everywhere."

Soñar! Grain-Free Organic Chips, 5 oz – Buy 6 bags for $33.00

I don't have any sort of allergy to grain, but I do love creative chip recipes! These are made of beans instead of grains, and are coated with a sprinkle of nacho cheese powder! Luckily for me, they aren't spicy but still have enough flavor to eat alone. This 100% feels like an earthy-crunchy sort of snack, but in the best way. I ended up eating the entire bag with no dips, but I bet these with salsa or cheese would be phenomenal. These are a great alternative to grain chips for anyone who wants/needs the diet change or for someone who just wants to try something new.

Sponsored Bonus Bundle from Clinique

There was also a little bonus bundle form Clinique inside. Both of the skincare items were also repeats from the Fall 2019 box, but my samples are long gone by this time so I don't really mind!

The Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, 0.5 oz - Estimated Value $10.50 (Buy 1 oz for $21.00)

I liked this gel formula last year and I still like it now! It has a creamy finish for a gel formula and contains loads of skin yummies like hyaluronic acid, green tea, and caffeine. This feels very much like an energizing sort of hydrator and I like it during the day on a fresh face or under makeup!

Moisture Surge Eye 96-Hour Hydro-Filler Concentrate Duo 0.17 oz - Estimated Value $11.56 (Buy 0.5 oz for $34.00)

I like this enough, but less than the other gel. It boasts 96 hours of moisture which I don't think is actually a thing, but it does certainly add enough extra hydration for like 6-8 hours. Inside there are little confetti bubbles with concentrated ingredients very much like the hydrator above but with extras like niacinamide and coconut oil.

Pretty Easy Liquid Eyelining Pen, 0.01 oz - Estimated Value $11.00 (Buy a full-size 0.02 oz for $22.00)

While this pen is SO easy to use, it isn't my favorite formula because the black color itself isn't very bold. It does dry fast though, and stays put!

Verdict: Though there were a few repeats this month, this was a pretty good Spiritú box. I have to imagine the subscribers who also received the Fall 2019 box aren't over the moon about repeats, but if you didn't already receive the cute Honduran earrings and Clinique items you are probably super thrilled with them! I do think the rest of the box helped make up for the dupes, especially the poetry book, shampoo set, and socks! I also loved those yummy chips and thought the clutch was very pretty. Value-wise, the eye roller itself accounts for way more than the cost of the box, though I think the retail on that roller is super high. Either way, it's always nice for one single item to more than cover the rest of the box. I thought the range of items this season was also really broad, in a great way. It was a super fun unboxing experience to keep pulling out surprise after surprise.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I really love that clutch. I think it’s such a chic take on straw purses. I think the riot of color adds such a fresh feel to the structured pattern + classic shape of the bag. I really wish there was a way to attach a strap, though, even if they didn’t include one. At $25, though, I am considering buying one & trying to jury rig a strap myself! 😂

I have been with this box since the first box,and even though there was a couple repeat items,I feel this was their best box so far…..The box actually had a great value, where the past boxes the value was not too good,I look forward to the Fall Box.
