Birchbox Review - July 2020

Card Front for Birchbox July 2020

As always, this month's Birchbox came with an info card that lists the products on the front, with a Birchbox Tip listed on the back.

Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling & Lifting Mascara, 3.0 g - Estimated Value $8.82 (Buy a full-size 8.5 g for $25.00)

I love anything from Benefit Cosmetics, but I've never had a mascara that only required one coat to lift and curl my lashes. No clumps and no flakes; what more could a girl ask for? The top of this mascara wand is an innovative Hook 'n' Roll brush. The brush is coated in tiny, soft hooks that catch on to lashes, separating, curling, and lifting for a bold, wide-awake look. This unique applicator is now my favorite type of mascara wand. I've been spoiled; no other plain generic drugstore mascara wand will do. This product goes on so smoothly and volumizes so dramatically. It makes me want to bat my eyes over the top of my mask.

amika Soulfood Nourishing Mask, 20 mL - Estimated Value $2.24 (Buy a full-size 250 mL for $28.00)

amika's Soulfood Nourishing Mask has been a main staple in my haircare routine for quite some time. This is an amazing product. It's nourishing and hydrating and great for color-treated curls. The mask targets dry, brittle hair and split ends with a nutrient-packed formula of sea buckthorn berry, omegas 3, 6, 9, and 7, vitamins C and E, and jojoba oil. Free of parabens and harsh chemicals, this amazing smelling product has always left my hair looking shiny and feeling hydrated after only fifteen minutes. The only downside I see is how small this sample is; I literally can never have enough of this stuff. That being said, I'm actually excited to have a mask in a convenient travel size for any overnight trips in the future. Just 'cause you're on the go doesn't mean your hair doesn't get thirsty.

Dr. Pawpaw Tinted Peach Pink Balm Swatch for Birchbox July 2020

Here is a swatch of the item reviewed below.

Dr. Pawpaw Peach Pink Balm, 10 mL - Estimated Value $3.20 (Buy a full-size 25 mL for $8.00)

Dr. Pawpaw's Peach Pink Balm is for lips, cheeks, and cosmetic finishing. Now, you might think that the convenience of this would have an allure for me, but I'm not sure how I feel about a product that is both for the lips and cheeks. I feel like if a formula is hydrating enough for my lips, it will be too oily to put on other parts of my face. For myself, this balm's tint is not a drastic enough color to complement my skin tone and ends up being almost indistinguishable. I think this would be a great product to have in the glove box of your car or the bottom of your purse to pull out in a pinch if you need a little color in your cheeks or a little glossy, juicy look to your lips. Even if you only have this one product, you will be good to go!

Floss Beauty My Everyday Eyeshadow Tokyo for BirchBox July 2020

Here is a swatch of the item reviewed below.

Floss Beauty My Everyday Eyeshadow in TOKYO, 1.5 g - Full Size! Retail Value $16.00

Full-size product alert! This Floss Beauty My Everyday Eyeshadow in the shade TOKYO is full size. I love Floss Beauty; I'm a huge fan of their lip glosses and was thrilled to try something else from the brand. TOKYO is a buttery, shimmery champagne color. It glides on smoothly and blends easily — even for us ladies who sometimes, occasionally, when no one is looking, apply makeup with our fingers. I have pretty oily skin and this shadow did not crease on my lids at all. The packaging is sleek with a clean, minimalistic look that I love. This shadow is perfect for a natural makeup look or minimal makeup days when you just want a little bit of shimmer.

Heads up! Megan also got this shadow in her Birchbox this month. Click here to see her thoughts and her swatch!

Luxie Beauty 245 Small Shader Rose Gold Brush - Full Size! Retail Value $15.00

This adorable rose gold and pink Luxie Beauty 245 Small Shader Brush is a chic addition to any makeup guru's collection. With a thin rounded tip for precision, this cute eyeshadow brush is perfect for applying powder or cream shadows. I'm always excited to receive a beauty tool in a subscription box because they seem to come so rarely, and this brush has such soft bristles that it will be used quite frequently. The brush quality is good and makes all the difference when applying or blending eyeshadow. I think this brush may even be delicate enough to apply liquid eyeliner; I can't wait to give that a try!

Verdict: I think this was a good Birchbox! The Benefit Cosmetics Roller Lash Super-Curling and Lifting Mascara was spectacular. This is the type of product I would absolutely re-purchase. amika's Soulfood Nourishing Mask is another incredible product that I use on the daily but am more than happy to get in a travel size. I absolutely love the champagne shade of the Floss Beauty My Everyday Eyeshadow in TOKYO. This shade is just the right amount of shimmer to look good on every skin tone. Dr. Pawpaw's Peach Pink Balm is a strange all-in-one beauty look in a tube, perfect for someone on the go or caught in a jam where they need a little glam, wink wink. Also, the Luxie Beauty 245 Small Shader Rose Gold Brush is a refreshing change of pace from beauty, makeup, and skincare products. The estimated total value of this month's box is $45.26. I think that's quite nice for this $15 box especially with some of the recognizable brands received.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. If you subscribe to Birchbox now, be sure to check the image on the sign-up page. The box design pictured at the bottom is the first month you'll receive.

Value Breakdown: At $15.00 for this box, I calculated a total value of $45.26. Here's how that breaks down per item:

  • Mascara: $2.92
  • Hair Mask: $0.74
  • Balm: $1.06
  • Eyeshadow: $5.30
  • Brush: $4.98

Alternatively, each of the 5 items has an average cost of $3.00.

Is it not weird we do not have spoilers for August Samples and curated boxes,we usually have them by now….We usually customize on the 26th and 27th,which is tomorrow and Monday,I am wondering if there will be a box for August.

Customization is now open for Aces! The choices are pretty abysmal.

I sent Birchbox a message today asking about spoilers and they replied “We’re still working on August previews so it should be up soon for viewing.” I do not know what they consider soon since customization is tomorrow and Monday.

KL thank you for letting me know,it seems like we will get the spoilers the day we pick,or they might be doing the date to pick later this month.

Great review and well written!
Just curious when we’ll have spoilers for august birch? I feel like normally we would have some by now.

Hi Naomi,
Thanks for the thorough and fun review. You’ve made me determined to hunt down a sample of the Roller Lash from my stash. I’m sure there are at least a couple in there! This looks like a good box, but it might be more that your positivity is contagious!

Nice review, thank you! I’m on product overload and I haven’t been using any make-up lately, but it’s still fun to read about products.
