Lillypost May 2020 "In the Garden" Review

Lillypost always sends us a set of Finnley the Fox stickers along with a little note that introduces their coloring contest for the month. Kids can draw directly on the box and incorporate Finnley into the monthly theme, then share it on social media for a chance to win a prize. This month’s theme is "In the Garden" and they included some fun facts about gardens and some of the important living things you can find there!

When Your Lion Needs a Bath by Susanna Leonard Hill - Retail Value $7.99 (found here for $7.49)

This board book was a little more advanced than most, but it was playful and fun with cute and colorful illustrations. In this story, we are given some advice on how we can get our lion into a bath through a few tricks and our narrator speaks directly to us, even asking us some rhetorical questions. My kids had fun interacting with this story and seeing how the silly lion finally got clean...or did he?

Pretty Kitty by Karen Beaumont - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $15.29)

This book had a lot going on! There was rhyming text, repetitive phrasing, and even some counting, all of which my kids really enjoyed as we read. This story is about an older man who finds some kitties on his stoop, each day there seem to be more and while he contemplates taking them in, he ends up just shooing them away, until one day it starts to snow and the man has a change of heart. This was a sweet book whose illustrations seemed to tell even more of the story. I liked this one a lot more than I expected to and I think it will be a great book for talking about character development and making inferences based on illustrations!

Maurice the Unbeastly by Amy Dixon - Retail Value $16.95 (found here for $9.90)

This book was about a beast named Maurice who was nothing like a beast should be. Instead of being a loud, unruly carnivore, he is a mild-mannered vegetarian whose voice is quiet and melodious. In the hopes that he will become more beastly, his parents send him to the Abominable Academy for Brutish Beasts where he learns that while he isn't quite like the other beasts, he still has something to offer. This book was full of new vocabulary words (like the way they described his voice as "dreadfully melodious") and it had a great lesson about celebrating your differences and the character traits that are unique to you. I also loved how detailed and textured the illustrations were in this one!

Verdict: This month's Lillypost books were some cute ones! This month didn't feel quite as perfect for my kiddos as some past book selections have, but we still enjoyed reading these together. I really liked the Pretty Kitty book and I have a feeling it will become a favorite with the rhythmic repetition! I love being able to get a mix of books for my children of different ages each month. The total retail value of our books came to $42.93 ($32.68 with sale prices) which is great for a $24.90 ($19.95 + $4.95 shipping) box!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you will receive the June box, although it is possible you may get these books in a future box!

Value Breakdown: At $24.90 ($19.95 a month + $4.95 shipping) for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • When Your Lion Needs a Bath: $6.08
  • Pretty Kitty: $9.09
  • Maurice the Unbeastly: $9.73

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
