Love With Food Deluxe May 2020 Box Review

The box comes with a card. I would say these have to do with themes but the snacks don't seem selected based on themes at all:

There was also some advertising material this month:

On to the items:

Purely Elizabeth Ancient Grain Granola Bar, Original (1.06 oz) - Buy 5 bars for $5.99

We received the same item in the same flavor last month. (Repeat items are pretty common with Love With Food.) It's gluten free and vegan, if either of those is of concern to you. It's not bad, but I tend to not get super excited about crunchy granola bars as I prefer the softer ones. This also has amaranth, quinoa, and chia and those definitely do impact the texture.

Mighty Sesame Co. Tahini Bar, Cocoa Nibs (0.63 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $10.97

Tahini bars tend to show up fairly often in Love With Food but I think there are at least two different brands. This is small but it sticks to about 100 calories. It does not taste strongly of sesame, in case you were wondering, and there is something oddly satisfying about the texture. There is a fair amount of sugar but that probably helps hide the sesame flavor a bit.

Kind Dark Chocolate Cherry Cashew (1.4 oz) - Buy 12 bars for $15.49

I like the Kind dark chocolate cherry almond bars, so I suspected I would like this before I tried it, and I was right. You can pretty much see what you're getting, and it's not too hard. A few tiny bits of chocolate might flake off so just watch where they fall. If you want to try just one of these you can find them in a lot of different supermarkets and big box stores. They also have a build-your-own-box subscription if you eat a lot of their products.

Cooper Street Granola Cookie Bake, Chocolate Cherry (1 oz) - Buy 10 bars for $14 (found here for $12)

This was a new brand for me and this item was delicious. It tasted STRONGLY of almond extract, which is like my favorite flavor/scent of all time, and the texture was decent as well. I would consider buying more of these just for the almond extract flavor and this isn't even normally the kind of thing I would buy or eat regularly.

Boom Chicka Pop, Sea Salt (0.6 oz) - Buy a 9 oz bag for $6.17

This is pretty low in calories (most popcorn is) and it's a whole grain, so that's nice. It's fairly plain but, on the other hand, it doesn't get flavor powder all over your hands, and that can be a good thing in some situations. If I was in the market for bagged popcorn I would consider this.

180 Snacks Almond Rice Pops with Blueberries (0.5 oz) - Buy 10 bags for $10 (found here for $9)

These are a fairly regular inclusion in this box (sometimes we get ones that have a fruit other than blueberries). You kind of feel like you're eating a lot without getting a ton of calories, because these have a lot of air in them, and that can be a good thing, but the blueberry flavor is strong and a little bit artificial. They do kind of fall apart -- there were a lot of little bits at the bottom of the bag. They're a good texture, you don't have to worry about your dental work with these.

Beanitos Black Bean Sea Salt (1 oz) - Buy 6, 5 oz bags for $19.80

These are bean-based chips that don't have any corn. You can definitely tell the difference between these and corn chips. These show up in food subscription boxes all the time. At least most of them were intact this time around! A year or two ago, Beanitos changed their packaging (the bags are smaller now, they used to be 6.5 oz) and also their formula, and I liked the old ones better, but these are all right, and they are sturdy enough to stand up to most dips.

Bobo's Oat Bites, Original with Chocolate Chips (1.3 oz) - Buy 15 for $22.50 (found here for $18)

One of these shows up almost every month in this box. They have widely varying textures and I don't know if it has to do with the individual recipes (some have things like peanut butter) or if we're receiving products of various ages. This one was a little softer than usual, though I wouldn't call it soft. At least you could see some chocolate chips in this, although their flavor wasn't terribly strong.

Utz Premium White Cheddar Popcorn (0.75 oz) - Buy 10 bags for $11 (found here for $10)

Here was our second popcorn for the month. I have to admit, I was a little more excited about this one because CHEESE FLAVOR. This tasted pretty much like you would expect and the texture was fine (i.e., no unpopped kernels at the bottom and not a bunch of those shell things). I mean, there are a lot of competing products out there (I think I gained 5 pounds from Smartfood white cheddar popcorn in college) but this one is as good as any of the others.

Bakery on Main Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Bunches of Crunches with Chia (1.1 oz) - Buy 50 bags for $50

This is gluten free and has oats, amaranth, and millet. The chocolate is pretty good and I couldn't help but thinking while I ate this that it would be good on top of yogurt. You do need to eat it with a spoon, though, as it doesn't hold together really well and amaranth and millet and chia are all kind of small so you get a bunch of little particles when these clusters start to fall apart.

Prince of Peace Mango Ginger Chews (4 oz) - Retail Value $5.16

I can't eat these right now. Since March I have been having problems with my permanent retainer, which has proven not to be so permanent, as it has come unbonded from two teeth in a row. But I haven't been able to go to the dentist for COVID-19 reasons (my dentist is shut down for awhile longer yet, as is the orthodontist who put the retainer in), so I'm avoiding really sticky foods for the moment. My husband was a guinea pig. The first thing he said was, Love With Food sends too many ginger chews. (He's not wrong.) The second thing he said is, they were good and not as sticky as he expected (though still stickier than I can handle at the moment) but that he wouldn't have known the fruit flavor was mango if I hadn't told him.

Karma Golden Turmeric Wrapped Cashews (1.5 oz) - Buy 12 bags for $24.99

These have a little kick that takes awhile to hit you. It doesn't taste strongly of turmeric, and it doesn't turn your fingers yellow, both of which are probably for the best. These still have the skins (which differ from the shells, which have an oil that can cause contact dermatitis) which is what the wrapping is. It adds an interesting texture and makes these stand out a bit from the competition, which is nice when a lot of snacks these days are pretty repetitive.

Thinsters Chocolate Chip Cookie Thins (0.6 oz) - Buy 10 bags for $14 (found here for $12)

These show up every now and then in this box. I am not always a huge fan of crispy packaged cookies, but these taste strongly of butter to me (in a good way), and that wins me over. The texture is more satisfying than with other hard packaged cookies, as well.

Smash Gummy, Fresh Picked (2.1 oz) - Buy 8 bags for $24

Here is another item I can't have, this time because they're not vegetarian. My husband is usually willing to eat gummies, though, and he's been having a few of these at a time (he won't eat the whole bag at once because it has 22 grams of fiber, which is kind of a lot to consume at once and if you plan to do so I can only recommend drinking a ton of water at the same time). These are free of high fructose corn syrup and have 3 grams of sugar per serving, which is not a lot, but the bag is at least 2 servings, so do keep that in mind.

Darrell Lea Real Twists, Strawberry (1.7 oz) - Buy 8 bags for $23.99

This is another repeat item. What I remember about these from last time is that they smell amazing right when you open the package and that was true this time as well. These are kind of like Twizzlers in terms of texture and style -- not too difficult considering my current dental issues. Their flavor isn't quite as strong as the scent for some reason. I have seen that these come in grape as well and I would like to try that flavor sometime in the future.

Natural Cut Turkey Snack Stick (0.5 oz) - Buy 8 for $12 (found here for $10.50)

This one, I can't pass off to my husband, because he won't eat meat sticks. I am keeping a pile of such things for when I eventually go back to my office (whenever that will be) as there are a lot of keto people there. (I don't know officially that this is keto-friendly but a lot of meat sticks are, which is probably why they show up in food subscription boxes fairly regularly.)

Verdict: There were 16 items in the May 2020 Love With Food Deluxe Box. A lot of them were repeats (Beanitos, Purely Elizabeth bar, Darrell Lea candy, Thinsters, 180 Almond Rice Pops, etc.) but that is something I've come to expect from this subscription. There were some new items as well. I always get excited about cheese popcorn, and the chocolate cherry granola bake cookie thing was delicious. The Kind bar and cashews were pretty good as well, and I have a new appreciation for Bakery on Main granola after trying this chocolate flavor. So the things that were new to me were mostly well-received (at least the vegetarian ones) and I am generally able to find homes for the non-vegetarian items.

I love. Love with food. I have sent this subscription to my niece because she enjoyed this box when she was with me for the summer…

Agreed, it’s a good box. They had a Black Friday sale which made the yearly subscription an excellent value.

With the Smash Gummies, what meat is in them to make them not vegetarian?? Blegh. Or did you mean to say vegan, because of the gelatin? Wish there was a picture of what they actually looked like. These reviews are always interesting to read, but I think I’m too picky to sign up since I’m not a big nut and seed person.

Gelatin is not vegetarian either. I don’t usually open the things I can’t eat as it is harder to give open food away.

Be very careful of the Smash Gummy, Fresh Picked candies. The first ingredient is Chicory Root Fiber, which can cause stomach pain, and other unpleasant side effects. It’s surprising there isn’t some sort of warning on the package like there is for candies that have sorbitol.

Beyond that, none of the different flavors tasted like what they were intended to be, and it was hard to tell one flavor from the other.

It’s a shame; the packaging looks so appealing…

Love with Food is amazing, just signed up some of my friends who are in the military to get these overseas. Love with Food sends to APO’s with no additional cost, I loved getting this when I was over seas because it wash nice to get routine care packages without delay and it was such a great value. When my family sent care packages, even with the military discounts for bases, it was still $10-18 just the box and shipping charges. Highly recommend for military friends and family.
