BoxyCharm May 2020 Review

Our box did not come with an info card this month.

Let's see what I received!

GLAMGLOW BERRYGLOW Probiotic Recovery Face Mask, 2.5 oz - Retail Value $49.00

I generally love GLAMGLOW products, but I really didn't enjoy this mask. I couldn't get past the slightly artificial berry + yogurt scent, and didn't love the way my skin felt after using it. Let's back up and go over how you actually apply this. I layered some over my clean face and waited for the recommended 10 minutes. I then wiped it off with a tissue as the directions said. My skin honestly felt filmy. Hydrated, but filmy. I know loads of people love this product, but I don't think I am one of them.

BoxyCharm Exclusive STUDIOMAKEUP Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $35.00

I have never heard of this USA-made brand, and although I find the palette packaging to be a little on the generic side, I thought the shades were gorgeous the second I saw them. There is a mix of 4 matte shades and 5 shimmers and all work really well together to create neutral looks that lean a little '90s frost, but in a good way! The pigment was pretty good, with a couple of the mattes needing extra application to really shine. All in all, a pretty decent palette if you are looking for natural shades with nice blendabilty.

Top to bottom: Sheen, Flaxen, Bare, Gilded, and Wicked

Top to bottom: Lace, Duck, Blush, and Fate.

Pretty Vulgar Eyeshadow Primer, 10 ml - Retail Value $22.00

I generally just use a MAC paint pot if I use an eyeshadow primer, but I recently ran out. I decided to try this instead and I have mixed feelings on this formula. For shimmer shadows? A total dream! Grabs on and doesn't let go. For mattes? Not good. It is like this formula is too tacky to work well with mattes and makes them look splotchy on my lids rather than smooth. It does work so well with the shimmers that I will keep it around, but for matte looks I will go elsewhere.

Daily Concepts Shampoo Bar, 3 g - Retail Value $24.00

I am a shampoo bar enthusiast (heck, I even wrote up a list of faves recently!) so I was happy to see a new brand in this box, even if shampoo bars are something I have never gotten in a BoxyCharm box before. Sadly, this was a dud for me. While this bar had a great scent and a very useful ribbon, it left my hair feeling waxy and filmy, no matter how I tried to wash it out. Will had a similar experience, with his hair kind of looking like he had used pomade in it since it was dry, even though he had just washed it. This is a no for me.

Blinc Black Lash Primer - Retail Value $26.00

Finally, our last item is a lash primer in black. This is pretty great since I struggle to hide the formulas that look white when applied. I loved the silicone brush head because it was curved, but both the concave and convex side had little silicone comb bristles that really helped to separate my lashes. While I don't use lash primers often, I really quite liked this one! It gave my lashes added volume (but not really length) without making them clumpy.

Verdict: My BoxyCharm box has an overall value of $156.00 which is great for a $25 box. Though the value was there, this is one of my least favorite Boxy assortments. My two favorite items were the palette and the lash primer. I didn't like the mask or shampoo much at all. The lid primer is great for maybe half of my shadows, so I will keep it around. Admittedly, this box always tends to have a great value, and you might have liked yours a little more than I liked mine! Fingers crossed for a better June base box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is still available, but there are variations! These boxes do sell out, so if you love it, hurry.

Value Breakdown: At $25.00 for this box, here is approximately what you are paying per product:

  • GLAMGLOW Mask $7.85
  • StudioMakeup Palette $5.61
  • Pretty Vulgar Eyeshadow Primer $3.53
  • Daily Concepts Shampoo Bar $3.85
  • Blinc Lash Primer $4.17

Alternatively, the average cost of each of the 5 items is $5.00.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I loved my boxy charm box but I did cancel about six months I had to much makeup. it’s like June April and may they really saw my quiz so thank you. June boxy luxe was my favorite. I can use it all. if I don’t give it to my mom. 🙂

Is anyone else in awe of the amount of the amount of random brands we see almost exclusively in these boxes? I’m specifically thinking about this STUDIOMAKEUP palette – the colors are unoriginal, the packaging is (as she said) generic, and the formula is probably pretty similar to things already out there. So why does it exist? What’s their value prop?
I’m all for small brands with some unique angle and having some healthy competition in a marketplace, but seeing SO many of these random brands makes me question their quality, commitment to the product, and generally their reason for existing. It just seems like they’re making low cost items that will be eventually tossed aside and contribute to our already growing consumer waste problem.

I love Boxycharm but this month didn’t really do it for me. It didn’t give me the cool beans effect that I usually get. Plus my box didn’t even come in a Boxycharm box, it came in a normal brown box which everything was just thrown together and my eye shadow pallet was messy.

Always appreciate your honest feedback on the products.

Some clever folks on Reddit suggested repurposing the shampoo bar as a solid brush cleanser.

I use lava soap for brushes. It is kind of grindy, so I just rub bristles against it and it washes off everything!

I’m concerned it may be too oily for that so don’t go in with your best brush. I may try to shave with it. Who knows??? Mine is sort of gross and sticky, like it didn’t cure properly.

I just used the Glam Glow mask for the first time this morning. I noticed the directions said to tissue off, cringe, and I was scared. I used a slightly dampened wash cloth to remove, working in sections and, I loved how my skin looked and felt after. I wonder why they suggest only tissue-ing off.

I will have to give this a shot! Thanks for the tip 🙂

I’m using a different mask right now that also says to tissue off, and I found my skin feels MUCH better removing it with a damp washcloth like you mentioned. 🙂

Totally seems like the way to go. A lot of tissues drop lint too so from the get go it seems like a bad idea, not to mention, less gentle. Maybe they want us to know it is fine for some product to remain?

kim

I wiped it off with a damp face cloth too and would do that again in the future – can’t imagine just using a tissue. Otherwise it was a gentle enjoyable mask IMO!

Yeah, I liked it too. 🙂

The shampoo bar makes a great brush soap!

My box was terrible too and the shampoo bar was smashed.
Doesn’t matter so much as I would not of used it anyway but could of donated it. Looks like June may be just as bad. Hoping premium will be okay😊

Sometimes when primers are too tacky for a matte shadow, if you just dust over some translucent powder or a shade close you your skin shade, it will help with the blending.

Good advice! I will give it a shot!

Yeah my May Boxycharm sucked so bad. I was so Pissed when I opened my box! Wipes, seriously? Stop sending me wipes! And that eyeshadow palette had such uneven portions with each eyeshadow, looked like some were pressed too hard. May was a huge dud!

My box was full of disappointing filler repeats that I was happy I avoided the first time around. I hate how BoxCharm seems to come up with new ways to be shady. There is ZERO thought put into how the variations are put together.

I really love Boxycharm, but May was a now go for me. Hopefully June is better.

A no go*

I’d love to receive that Blinc primer. I usually use BeneFit They’re Real tinted lash primer, which is amazing, but I’ve always wanted to try a Blinc product.
