BoxyCharm Premium May 2020 Review

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and often listing upcoming sales and promotions. It looks like my assortment this month is box #48.

Now, on to the items!

Too Faced Natural Matte Neutral Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $38.00

For someone who loves more natural shades of eyeshadow, this is a pretty great palette! I do have to admit that the first three shades barely show up on my lids, because they are quite close to my skin tone. It takes a lot of product to make them 'pop' for me. They also have a lot of fallout with brushes, even though they are smooth. Things get more promising with the smaller shades which seem to be certainly more eager to shine, and have nice pigment levels and a buttery soft finish. They apply very soft and subtle, but are nicely buildable, meaning you can keep your look natural or go for more drama. This palette has a very sweet scent that I quite like.

Top to bottom: Heaven, Nude Goals, Lace Teddy, Less is More, and Cleavage.

Top to bottom: Au Natural, Sexpert, Risky Biz, and Hookup.

Smashbox Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio in 'Holy Crop" - Retail Value 22.00 (this trio is sold out, but others are available!)

I had to grin as I swatched these shades because dang were they pigmented and SO smooth! That being said, these def worked better with fingertip application over a brush, unless the brush had super firm bristles or was a little damp. As someone who generally applies with finger and blends with brushes, this is no problem for me, but worth mentioning. I really like this color combo. It works well with my skin tone and eye color and isn't too "red" or "orange." The matte shade is downright gorgeous and has a little hidden purple that makes it pop with the other shades.

Top to bottom: Outfoxed, Miss Chili, and Loungerie

Milk Makeup Glow Oil Lip + Cheek in 'Astro', 5.1 g - Retail Value $15.00

I absolutely love a multi stick and Milk is one of those brands I would like to see more often in boxes. This is a brand all about creative yet effortless looks, and this stick is a great example of that. Most lip + cheek sticks I have used are a sheer wash of color, but this is a sheer wash of shimmer in a clear base that creates a wash effect. The shimmer is a plummy color and very flattering. I loved how this looked on my lips, but was more cautious about on my cheeks. I just didn't think it would be a good look. I actually really liked it and it formed some sort of weird blush highlighter hybrid effect on my face. To make sure you don't disturb any makeup, I recommend dotting this on the cheekbones and then tapping with your finger to blend. This is a really subtle flush, so it was pretty easy!

She's pretty!

Battington Beauty Powder and Contour Brush Set - Retail Value $90.00

Ok, I personally find the $90 retail on these brushes more than a little nuts. I think we can probably all agree that that retail callout is high. They also happen to be the only brushes on the brand's website, so I don't have any other reference points in terms of brush values across the Battington brand.

Moving on, these are indeed nice brushes. They are made from vegan-friendly artificial bristles that absorb less pigment, so ideally they stain less. Nice! The handles are weighted which is always a selling point for me (though not a $90 selling point). The powder head is nice and fluffy, diffusing blush on my cheeks and the contour is a great size for right under the cheekbone.

tarte Sugar Rush Best Bud Lip Butter Balm in 'Peony', 6.3 g - Retail Value $12.00

How adorable is the yellow blossom-inspired lid on this balm? Presh! The balm inside is a sheer sort, with no change to the color of my lips. It smells like chocolate pudding maybe? I can't place it, but I don't hate it! This balm is hydrating and nourishing, and though it lacks any real bells or whistles, I like it a lot.

KVD Vegan Beauty Ink Well Long-Wear Matte Eyeliner in 'Darkwave', 2 ml - Retail Value $20.00 (currently on sale for $10.00)

Wait, is this a non-black eyeliner???? IT IS.

It is actually the prettiest blue ever. I am obsessed with this color. I rarely wear bold eyeliners, but when I do it is always a thinner streak of some bright color like teal or blue. I really, really wanted to love this formula but it dries SO fast. You seriously can't even get across your entire eye before it dries on the brush tip and you need to dip back into the little pot. It was really hard to get a consistent line across my lids without it looking messy because I had to start and stop over and over. It certainly was long-lasting. I had to use an oil cleanser to get it off!

SWOON.

I am so bummed because this color is totally a WOW. Does anyone have a similar shade with a better formula they could recommend to me?

Verdict: My BoxyCharm Premium was pretty good this month! I do think there could have been more retail value inside though. I just don't buy the brushes being $90 and that made up a massive chunk of the box "worth." That being said, there was still great value here! The Too Faced Palette essentially paid for the whole box, leaving me with a great lip balm, magical multi stick, another eyeshadow palette, and more.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Nice box! Love that electric Blue eyeliner!
I love Kat von d products, I hated Kat left despite All the controversy that surrounded her, her products were solid, and quality. I have been buying some of her discounted products on the KVD site.

thanks! I meant it to be a little thinner, but that always seems to happen when I attempt eyeliner. Maybe a shade like this needs to be bold anyways!

I received the KVD liner in Lolita and the fact that it dries incredibly fast was the major selling point for me! I’m an so sad that this is being discontinued and really hope it’s the packaging being changed and not the formula. This is the first eyeliner I have ever been able to use without making a mess from shaky hands and thin, runny liner or fighting a river of tears because my eyes are too sensitive to the ingredients. My eyes didn’t irritate at all with this liner! They didn’t have time because it dried so fast!! Lol I love mine!!

I think I need to work on my speed. I couldn’t get it across my eye fast enough and then when I tried to connect lines it was just a disaster! I bet it was gorgeous in Lolita!

Oh, I couldn’t draw a continuous line either, girl. But I was so grateful to not have watery eyes before I finished. Lol And yes, the Lolita is stunning! 🙂

Carol

Wow, that eyeliner looks so pretty!

I don’t have the lid space (or the skill lol) to use eyeliner beyond a very simple upper waterline/tightline.
