Our March/April 2020 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.

Now, on to the items!

Avant Gentle Rose Beautifying Face Exfoliant, 1.69 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $126.11

I tend to like this brand, though I am always confused at the arguably crazy price tag. I have tried a few of their creams and moisturizers before, but this is my first exfoliator! I loved it immediately for a few reasons: the amazing rose scent, the hydrating formula, and the micro-exfoliators. No harsh scrubbies in here, just the tiniest grains that feel soft on your skin while still scrubbing away dullness and dead skin! The scent reminds me of my grandmother's roses and the formula itself leaves a lot of moisture behind to care for your newly resurfaced skin. This was a winner for me!

Piperwai Activated Charcoal Deodorant Cream, 2 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $11.99

I (sadly) have to be cautious with any deodorant that has baking soda. I used to use one regularly then suddenly one day had a reaction that left my armpits red and splotchy. Not cute. While I am a little scared to try this there, I did try it under my bra line and on my thighs. The rub is real, especially during the warmer months. Summer can be a nightmare if your thighs enjoy touching! I really like this formula and the scent (herbal and minty!) so I am going to hang onto this for when it gets hotter outside. The formula feels very velvety, so I can only imagine this will be a lifesaver!

Dr. Dennis Gross Extra Strength Alpha Beta Daily Peels, 3 pack - Estimated Value $8.80 (Buy 30 treatments for $88.00)

I love, love, love a good peel! These sorts of pads make it super easy to perform high-quality peels at home with pretty great results! These pads come 2 to a set, with one side housing the cloth with the AHA exfoliator, and the other an anti-aging neutralizer. Simply wipe your face down with the first cloth until it dries up and wait two minutes. I do peels frequently, so this solution didn't bother me but if you are sensitive, maybe just apply for a few seconds. Allow the solution to sit on your face for 2 minutes, then wipe down with the second pad, which calms everything down. AHAs make skin more sensitive to sun, so please don't forget to apply sunscreen after you use this! I always notice smoother skin after using these pads and regular use improves overall skin tone long term! My only complaint with this is that there were only three sets inside our sample.

Daily Dose Miracle Moisture Spray Leave-In Conditioner Detangler, 8.5 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $24.95 (on sale for $17.99)

I often skip actual conditioner in favor of a good leave-in. My favorite right now is by OUAI, and though I doubt any other could dethrone that from my favorite spot, this is still a really nice leave-in. It has a heavier formula and a really soft white floral scent. I like to towel dry my locks and spray leave-in conditioners all over my ends only, then finger comb my hair into soft waves. I also like a spritz throughout the day if I happen to have static or flyaways. My recommendation for that is to spray a little into your hand, rub your palms together, then pat them onto your dry tresses.

Whish Renewing Mud Mask, 2 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $48.00

This is a hit or miss brand for me. I tend to like their shaving formulas but the skincare I am less enthused about. This is an interesting little mask though, because you only leave it on for a minute, unlike traditional clay masks that you let dry on your face for much longer. I applied to my face, let dry for a minute, then rubbed in circular motions. Then I rinsed my face. I actually liked this a lot! It seems like a great way for someone like myself with dry skin to enjoy the benefits of a clay mask without the drying. The exfoliation was gentle but effective, and my skin looked pretty radiant after rinsing this off and toning.

Daily Concepts Multi-Functional Soap Sponge Mother of Pearl – Full Size! Retail Value $8.00

Loads of exfoliation in this month's tube! This pearl-infused sponge can be used on face and body, though I personally find it too small to be a body sponge. It provides very gentle exfoliation and the pearl has brightening benefits for my skin. I like to keep one or two of these stashed away for trips since it basically means I can skip bringing my exfoliation tool and facewash.

Vagisil Scentsitive Scents White Jasmine V-Friendly Bath Bomb - Retail Value $3.99

Vagisil Scentsitive Scents Peach Blossom V-Friendly Bath Bomb - Retail Value $3.99

Who doesn't love a good bath bomb? This pair is specially formulated to be gentle to your most sensitive areas, which is certainly important. These bombs are pH balanced and have chamomile, so you can have a bath that feels luxe but is also good to your skin. I really loved the scent of the jasmine one, but the peach one was waaaay too sweet and fruity for me. I passed it along to a friend.

Oralgen NuPearl.32X Perfecting Teeth Whitening Pen, 2.5 ml - Full Size! Retail Value $19.95

Finally, our last item is a tooth whitening pen. I thought this product was effective but kind of time-consuming to use. You basically apply it to your teeth, smile for about 30 seconds, then leave it on for 10-20 more minutes. Smiling for 30 seconds is a long time! I liked that the gel formula and brush applicator allowed me to get into the little nooks and crannies that my whitening toothpaste can miss. All in all, this does work, but I might be too impatient for this sort of thing.

Verdict: NewBeauty TestTube had quite the assortment this time. It was a little hit or miss for me personally, but I did enjoy this mix. The value is also pretty good, landing around $248.82 for your under $40 investment. It's true that the Avant exfoliator makes up a massive portion of that value, so if you don't like it like I did this might feel like less of a win. I loved it, as well as the peel pads, leave-in conditioner, and the clay mask. I also enjoyed one of the bath bombs, the deodorant, and the pearl sponge. There wasn't anything really groundbreaking in here, but everything was really practical and useful, which makes me feel pretty good about this tube!

The alleged value of the scrub is an insult to the intelligence of subscribers.

That is what it is actually selling for at the manufacturer’s website, if you click the link. Same size container and everything.

Yea I know and I don’t know why you felt the need to repeat that. It insults the intelligence of subscribers. I would love to see proof of people actually spending that.

Jane

I used to have TWO accounts for a year because I really liked TestTube. The previous 2 tubes were a letdown. When I saw spoilers for March it was a complete disappointment! I am “practical” so it is VERY rare that I can’t find use for at least 2 items to justify the cost of the Tube. Well, the only item I could use in March are 3 peel pads worth $8. I don’t care for Whish mud, have thin hair to avoid creamy leave-on conditioners, very sensitive to scented anything (started coughing from those heavily synthetically perfumed Vagisil bombs instantly! The scent triggered such bad allergy in our German Shepherd he started sneezing & itching so bad that he ripped his fur off by morning & had to be on steroids & antihistamines for a week to heal ! I was so mad at TestTube!), Avant is the overpriced “house brand” that I don’t care to buy even for $18 on Boxy sale. I actually have NEVER been so disappointed. So, since I haven’t been billed yet, I emailed to cancel one account and skip March on the second. Guess what? Too late! Or nobody at CS cared. I got billed for both and received both tubes. The value of the Tube maybe high but the “value to me” was zero = I wasted $80 (actually, $280 if you add the vet bill!) and have TWO sets of products I can’t use or gift. Hope to swap it for something useful eventually so it wouldn’t be a total loss. PLEASE LIZ OPEN UP SWAP SITE SOON!!!! We have “stay at home” orders till 4/30 but mailman comes to the house every day with bills & junk mail so as long as there ink in the printer I can create a PayPal label & swap. I am “high risk” (nearly died from pneumonia just over a year ago) so I can’t go anywhere. All I do is stare on laptop screen all day (I’m IT, so “tag you are it”!), which takes SO MUCH longer to do at home having to share house wi-fi with Netflix, Xbox & PS4. I have no “swap till I drop”, no “retail therapy” and I am about to go crazy from the work overload & no “escape from reality”. Please, Liz, open the swap so I could get rid of this double Tube fiasco.
P.S. TestTube – I see you are reading our comments. I sure hope the next Tube has a HERO luxe item (like you did with Sunday Riley A+) and no heavily scented nauseating products or I’ll cancel BOTH accounts for sure!

I get overwhelmed if there is a major hero product in each beauty box- mostly because it takes time to use properly, I am trying to build a skincare system that’s perfect for me so I end up skipping around products and not sure which is helpful or not. I end up with things not being used or approaching expiration which stresses me out lol. This box didn’t look exciting but it ended up being a family friendly haul.

My teenage daughter loves the leave in spray for her fluffy medium waves and she smells delicious, my husband likes the little exfoliating sponge and I do too, neither of us got on board with spongelle sadly. I am not afraid of aluminum deodorants giving me cancer but I am enjoying trying natural deodorant and I really really like this charcoal minty one, it’s going to last FOREVER.

Then the teeth whitening pen, exactly what I wouldn’t want to buy for myself that makes me feel a little pampered to get in the box! Sorry for the ramble but basically as somebody who is a product snob I still recommend boxes like this that have really useful family items!

Ok, PLUS the super strong AHA pads I’ll break out on special occasions, bath bombs that are woman friendly are actually really important, and one of my favorite things I’m not going to lie it’s the tube itself it’s extremely pretty and I love stashing things in it and keep them in my shelves on display 😀

I skipped this tube because I thought it was priced to high. But after seeing the review I’m tempted to get it with the $10 off promo they emailed, if it still works! (Code 10FORYOU)

Using the deodorant as a skin protectorant is brilliant. I’ve been both forgoing a bra and wearing housedresses in quarantine, and the chub rub is definitely real. I usually use baby powder, but this seems like a slightly more luxe solution.

I love Monistat chafing relief gel for that. It’s super cheap and works wonders. (some people actually swear by it as a face primer.)

Reply ButtonReply

Amy in KC

I got the Monistat chafing gel from a free sampling program and LOVED it! Feels so velvety soft! Thanks for the tip about the face primer; I’ll have to try it for that.

Melissa

I loved this month’s tube. It might be my favorite one to date.

I still love this box. I love to try out all the products. The deodorant worked great for me. This is the first time any aluminum free has ever worked for me. I loved everything else. I use the face mask in the shower. It is great after I am all washed, my face feels so great after! The bath bombs were nice to relax too. This is one of the boxes I really look forward too!

If I saw this in a bundle in an edit sale or at TJ Maxx for $39 I would pass. I received this tube and wasn’t impressed. I don’t know if I’ll stay subscribed.

Deanne

I always think of if I could pick the stuff up at t.j.Maxx also, and while I’m sure all of these items could be found separately, I am pretty sure it would still add up to more money, it always sneaks up on me!

Thank you for taking the time to give us feedback. We’re sorry that you were disappointed with our March Tube, our goal is the total satisfaction of our subscribers. Hopefully, you enjoy our upcoming one.

Cyndi

My thoughts exactly. This and the two tubes before it were disappointing enough for me to cancel for now. Not to say that I wouldn’t resubscribe if it’s interesting again.

Reply ButtonReply

Linda

I didn’t get this one, but I’m hoping their spoilers for the next one is great. I haven’t bought the last two because of that, but I want to really like this subscription. Hope for better stuff next time around.

Suzy

The last two have been misses for me, so I cancelled. I figure if they amp up again, I will join again, because this has been my favorite for so long!

I did like the Vagisil bath bombs, they smelled so good! The leave in conditioner smells so good, but it’s not the best I have used. I did love the deodorant! I liked everything else ok, but I just didn’t feel excitement for this box like I normally do.

Caragon

Although I think the price of this box is to high for what’s in it, I was happy with the items. I liked the bath bombs, they smell nice and the scent lingers on the skin. It’s not something I would have bought myself, so I was glad to try it out. I’ve kept with this sub for about a year, if the value/quality doesn’t amp up, I’m out.

FYI Megan the brand Megababe has thigh rescue stick that works great for chub rub, also they have a talc free powder called bust dust that helps keep bra dry. Other great products. The products they sell have been a huge success with me.

Reply ButtonReply

Joy-not the other one

Yes! And Megababe also makes a great aluminum free deodorant. It’s called Rosy Pits but It has a gorgeous unisex scent (it has Sandalwood in it) that even my husband likes. It’s baking soda free too.

Oz

Thanks for the info! I will have to check them out. I could definitely use some bust dust.
I was really underwhelmed by this tube.

With these boxes you have to ask yourself if you saw the same box of stuff at a store would you pay the asking price (in this case around $40) for it. In this case my answer is a strong no.

Reply ButtonReply

Pamela Grow

That’s a great point, Christina. I resubbed to this one last year. But I think I’m going to drop it.
