Mystery Box By Fashionsta February 2020 Review

Fenty Beauty Moroccan Spice Eyeshadow Palette - Retail Value $59.00 (on sale for $29.00)

I am over the dang moon about receiving this full-size Fenty Beauty palette. Strangely enough, this also came in another beauty box in March, but since I don't subscribe to that one, no doubles here. I've only tried a few products from Fenty but I've always been pretty happy with them and this is my first palette from Rihanna's makeup brand. First of all- I just love the sturdy weight of this palette and think the design and deep purple color is gorgeous. Inside, there are 16 highly pigmented colors that cover mattes, metallics, and even a couple of glitter shades that all run from deep tones to bright stunners. There is also a large mirror so you always have assistance when applying this Moroccan-inspired palette.

I think I went a little too wild with the eye look I created and it became a little muddy. I used Cumin Get It, Henna Sea, Fez Up, Marrakush, Desert Baked, and then a little Souq It 2 Me and Evil Genie on the corners of my lids. Even a little Sahara Stunna as a highlight on my browbone. I wasn't disappointed in the pigment of any of them and the metallics were so creamy and glided on super well. I noticed a little bit of fallout but nothing too intense. I'll have to play around with these colors to get a bit more acquainted with which colors work perfectly together on me.

Peter Thomas Roth 24k Gold Mask Pure Luxury Lift & Firm Mask, 1.7 oz. - Estimated Value $28.33 (Buy a full-size 5 oz. for $85.00)

What a luxurious gel mask! I've never purchased anything with 24k gold in it that I can remember, but I've always been curious. This mask is all about anti-aging and creating a firmer look for my skin. Since I just turned 40, I'm always looking for ways to slow down the process of wrinkles and if slathering on this metallic mask will help, I'm all for it. After spreading on a generous amount, I waited 10 minutes before washing off. Since this is a gel mask that doesn't dry, I found it a lot easier to use a facial cloth to remove it since just water and my hands didn't do the trick. My face did feel really nice afterwards and quite hydrated. This is really gentle and non-drying so I'll be using this more often in my mask rotation.

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer, 0.67 oz. - Retail Value $22.00

I really like water creams like this one from Peter Thomas Roth since they feel sooooo hydrating on my skin. Water Drench also includes hyaluronic acid which boosts collagen production for more youthful looking skin. After applying, my skin feels well moisturized and plump while even having a bit of a glow.

Cailyn Spa Bounce It Aqua Memory Gel, 50 mL - Retail Value $58.00 (on sale for $46.40)

What a strange consistency this aqua memory gel is! "Bounce It" is the perfect name since it's super jiggly and moves like pudding. I'm not going to lie, I kept checking the box to make sure this was indeed for my face since it's such a unique texture. The texture looks smooth as glass once settled until I stick my fingers into it which is when it becomes sort of chunky in my hands. The chunky gel easily smooths into my skin though, creating a sheen as it soaks in. It sort of feels like the serum leftover from a sheet mask while it's seeping in which is a little sticky as first. I'm not the biggest fan of that feeling, although it does eventually go away. I'm a little on the fence about this product since there are other facial moisturizing products I just prefer the feel to.

NARS Lip Gloss is Mythic Red - Retail Value $24.00

It's nice to see another familiar brand like NARS in the mystery box. I received the shade "Mythic Red" which is actually a bold mauve in the lip gloss. I'm not hugely into gloss, but the pigment here is great and it feels hydrating on my lips without feeling sticky. I put about two coats on to receive the coverage I wanted here and it made my lips look shiny and plump.

Urban Decay UD Pro Angled Eyeliner E-214 Brush - Retail Value $22.00

I'm actually quite excited to receive this brush from Urban Decay since I have very few for liner. Since being in school for Esthetics where I also learn makeup, I've gotten more comfortable using eyeshadow as a liner which this brush is perfect for. I wet this thin angled brush first, then dabbed it into the Fenty palette (color: Nuts N Dates) to get it loaded up with pigment before dragging it across my top lids. I think the precision of this brush is perfect and I had an easy time using it. I also love the design of the brush with the grey brushed metal handle.

Verdict: I am very happy with my first Mystery Box by Fashionsta, even though it seemed to ship quite late. I liked receiving more brand-name products than I normally do in the more indie-brand focused Fashionsta Box and most things were full-size or at least deluxe. The palette is definitely my favorite item, with the brush and the gold mask as runners up. I'll also use the water cream, but the gloss I may pass on since I prefer matte lips, and I couldn't get comfortable with the gel cream. Overall- this mystery box has an estimated retail value of $213.33 for the six products I received which I think is more than great for $50 box.

Has anyone received their box since the COVID-19 pandemic? I paid awhile ago and still have not received my box. Kept receiving messages saying due to Covid….
This is getting absurd bc other boxes are having minimal to no problems….

The eye look did not look like “too much” at all. It looks nice. I’m leery about a mystery box from here. I have seen people open them and have just 2 items. But this right here is the best mystery box I have seen.

Lori

Are all the mystery boxes the same or are there variations? Do they have spoilers ever?

Marne Orenich

They do spoilers on their Instagram page but I’m not 100% sure about variations.

Just a heads up about that “familiar brand”, NARS. NARS was originally a cruelty-free brand, but in order to capitalize on the growing Chinese market, they began testing on animals. Although NARS is trying to keep this disturbing fact quiet, it has been verified and was even reported on the Cosmopolitan site.

Thanks for the heads up, Rose. Definitely a good thing to consider.

Hi Rose! Well, that sucks. I formally retract my former enthusiasm for the NARS lip gloss. Dammit.

Hi L,

Looks like March (and future) shipping is on hold due to COVID-19-related LA County shutdowns. You can read more here (if you haven’t already): https://www.mysubscriptionaddiction.com/2020/03/fyi-the-box-by-fashionsta-shipping-update.html

Hi Marne, thank you so much for reviewing the mystery box! It looks fantastic! An amazing collection of really great products. Peter Thomas Roth is a fave of mine, ever since MSA (pretty sure it was Jessica) reviewed the Birchbox PTR set. I bought 4 of them! This has to be one of the best mystery boxes I’ve seen for quality and plush-branded beauty products. And the eyeshadow look you demonstrated managed to hit virtually every shade in the palette. You go girl! I’d be keeping that gloss, though. Colour looked great on your skin tone. Thank you for the detailed and creative review. Loved it. And I want that mystery box!
