Our January/February 2020 Review

NewBeauty TestTube is one of my favorite subs because they send really unique and new items, many of which I have never even heard of! This booklet is a great reference for each item we received this month. It is full of additional info, interesting facts, and editor commentary.

Now, on to the items!

FRÉ Skincare Protect Me, 2.03 fl oz - Retail Value $50.00

I am a sunscreen addict. It is the number 1 thing you can do to protect your skin against aging (other than just never leaving your house). That being said, there sure seem to be a ton of sub-par facial sunscreens out there! I want the protection without the film, please. This moisturizer manages to feel really great on my face. It is feather-light, which is a must-have! There is also a minimal scent in this formula, just a light clean whisper. Designed for skin that sweats, this is a perfect summer sunscreen. It actually arrived at the perfect time since I just ran out of my normal SPF moisturizer, and with a retail cost of $50 that more than covers the box cost, the rest of the items just feel like a bonus.

Soon Skincare Biocellulose Anti-Aging Face Mask - Retail Value $22.00

Soon Skincare Micro-Hole Hydrogel Collagen Face Mask - Retail Value $18.00

Soon Skincare Biocellulose Firming Face Mask - Retail Value $22.00

I really enjoyed this trio of masks. Each was a form of biocellulose material, meaning they kind of feel like a super-thin gel, but more like a layer of skin. My favorite would probably be the anti-aging because it combined three of my favorite skincare ingredients: hyaluronic acid, collagen, and niacinamide. The other two were both equally as excellent and contained a host of wonderful elements like aloe, raspberry ketones, rose, and ginkgo.

Caolion Pore White Cake Pack, 50 g  - Retail Value $14.49

I tend to use clay masks more as spot treatments because I have drier skin that seems to not react well to loads of clay-based skincare. Even still, I often still see random pimples on my jawline (I sleep with my hands under my chin, which is just awful but very comfortable) and I like clay because it seems to help dry out my unwanted spots. This pot came with a helpful little spatula to scoop out just the right amount. It is a very heavy sort of mask but has a nice soft medicinal scent and smooth texture.

10+ Free Chemistry Nail Color in 'Pink Sand Beaches', 0.4 fl oz - Retail Value $18.00

FYI: The shade of your polish may vary.

I find nail polishes a little hit or miss, more so now that I no longer have my long nails. My small nails are hard to paint, especially when it comes to darker shades, which is why I usually love pale pinks, nudes, lavenders, etc. This is pretty much a perfect Megan color! A soft lilac-leaning pink, it is neutral enough to still look good even if it chips a little, but special enough to be worth wearing. Application was awesome, and I could easily justify stopping after one coat. This polish dried relatively fast and had a very shiny finish. I am very, very pleased.

Love!

Naturally G4U Instant Eye Repair Serum, 0.25 fl oz - Retail Value $19.99

FYI: Subscribers will either receive this item or Naturally G4U Retinol Anti-Wrinkle Serum.

I was a little less obsessed with this eye cream for a few reasons. First, the pot felt like a sample size, even though it was the full size. I know, I know, eye creams and serums usually do arrive in smaller packages, but this just felt dinky. The second reason was that although it did have some goodies inside (hello cooling cucumber, hyaluronic acid, and peptides!) it didn't feel all that great on my skin. It actually felt like a tight film when I used it as a last step, but that feeling vanished when I added in some moisturizer. All in all, the price is great for the ingredients, I am just not excited here.

Bawdy Beauty Squeeze It Butt Mask – Retail Value $9.00

This was a first for me. This is a sheet mask for your BUM. Yes!! I get the reasoning behind this: we literally sit on that skin all day, and if you are regularly wearing tight-fitting leggings or rough fabrics, that skin might need a little love. I have to admit that I tend to quite literally ignore this area of my body aside from soap/shower gel. My poor bottom! I did open this packet with some apprehension: my butt is not small. What if this mask just covered like a pocked sized portion and I felt awful about myself after? It didn't help that Will discovered exactly what this product was and was outside the bedroom door laughing himself silly. Rude! I was really thrilled that this is a bigger mask. Both cheeks were well covered. Did I feel really silly laying on my stomach for 15 minutes with a sweatshirt on and my bum out? Yeah, yeah I did! Did I notice a major difference in my skin? I don't think so. But honestly, I don't look back there too much. Either way, this is literally like the most appropriate TestTube item this round and I did enjoy myself.

Supersmile Extra Whitening System On-The-Go - Retail Value $12.00

New Generation 45º Toothbrush - Retail Value $9.00

Not one to generally get excited about tooth-related products, I was ready to write this stuff off as fancy toothpaste and a pretty toothbrush, but after I tried it I am a convert! These tubes really do make your smile visibly whiter after one use. Simply apply a pearl-sized drop of both to a DRY toothbrush, and brush in circular motions for 2 minutes. There is a grainy texture similar to the cleaning paste used at your dentist's office, but less extreme. After 2 minutes rinse your mouth and enjoy your whiter smile! This is 100% a great option for anyone looking to brighten their smile without custom trays.

Rene Furterer STYLE Vegetal Texture Spray, 25 g - Estimated Value $7.26 (Buy 62 g for $18.00, currently out of stock)

Finally, our last item is a hair texture spray. It absolutely adds loads of texture with very little product, so be careful how much you apply! I like sprays like this, especially when I want to rock a messy bun or pony.

Verdict: NewBeauty TestTube is excellent. The value lands somewhere around $201.74, which is more than enough to justify the cost of this tube. In typical fashion, there were plenty of new to me products to try, which is what I look for in a NBTT. I am especially thrilled with the nail polish, FRÉ cream, and the teeth whitening kit. Never saw that coming! I also thoroughly enjoyed the bum mask and the face masks, as well as the texture spray. The only dud for me was the eye serum, but I am ok with there being only one miss!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Their website has updated and spoilers are there!!! Looks like a great box!!!!

Thanks for the heads up. This looks like a great box for me – which is good because I have an annual sub.

It is Thursday of the week they said spoilers would come out and still nothing. It is unacceptable that New Beauty Test Tube’s website (this page: https://testtube.newbeauty.com/pages/faq-and-help) says subscribers will be charged for the March tube the week of February 10 and the approximate ship date is the first week of March and they have not made a public announcement around why they are planning to charge us A MONTH LATE. They have a Facebook and Instagram presence, neither of which they update (inexplicably), a website, and they can presumably generate email correspondence. If this next box doesn’t completely wow me, I’ll be unsubscribing on principle.

I actually like test tube, mostly bc it has products i would usually not try, but it is super annoying for it to be March 3 and they haven’t revealed the March /April contents. I actually called to cancel and ended up just skipping this box, but the poor website maintenance combined with products i mostly give away, i will probably cancel. Seems like the other sub boxes give u a little more communication and customer service.

I always like NewBeauty but they should let costumers know what’s going on via their website. As a long time costumer, I usually have my box by now. Thanks to Lynn calling and sharing what she found out, I know now they will be billing the 10th. My complaint is in this day in age where they have a functional website, they don’t share that information. They just leave January’s tube contents up well into March. I’m quite certain customer service has an influx of calls with questions and all that could be fixed with some easy website communication.

I subscribed last July for an annual. I skipped the Sep/Oct box. Then I was charged separately for the Nov/Dec box. I contacted customer service several times to sort it through, and they refunded me the additional charge, and shipped my Nov/Dec box. But then I never received my Jan/Feb box. I contacted them again and they said they will send me. But nope. I then emailed them for a refund. no reply. I called customer service, the agent checked the notes and said the ~$30 is ‘a refund out of courtesy’ and annual subscription is a contract.

No the ~$30 is not a out of courtesy refund, it is a refund of additional charge that I did not agree to. I end up filing a dispute with my credit card company.

This subscription has poor customer service. Do not subscribe.

Did NBTT go out of business or something? I don’t think I’ve been charged yet and there are no spoilers for March – April. Timing seems weird.

Reply ButtonReply

We apologize for the delay, but yes, our valued subscribers will be charged on the 10th of March and the Tubes will ship out the following week. ☺️

Hi Sarah. I have been feeling a little anxious about this as well, so I called their cs number. I was told that they had issues with their billing system and are now planning to bill for March boxes on or about 3/10. The rep I spoke to also said that spoilers come out the week before billing so we can expect those the first week of March. The boxes will ship the week following billing. I feel better now having spoken to someone, hope this is helpful to you as well.

Thank you so much for posting this! I love my TT sub. & I’ve been checking on here everyday for the last 2 weeks hoping for a peek of a spoiler.
I’ve dropped my FFF sub. this yr bc I feel its no longer worth the money as I would just give 1/2 of the box away, or it just sat in a closet collecting dust. But I almost always use everything in my NB TT sub. 😍

Oz

Thank you for sharing the information. Much appreciated!

Sarah

Hi Lynn, Thanks so much for thinking to reach out to them and for sharing what you learned here. I thought I was just being overly anxious/excited, but good to know they are running a bit late this cycle and everything should be in order in the next few weeks. Thanks again!

Annette

Any spoilers coming for March/April yet??? This seems late!!???

I love test tube but this was a complete miss for me. I will not use chemical sunscreen which is bad for the environment and bad for you. I know the mineral stuff casts but I just deal with it.

The toothpaste was great! I have sensitive teeth and this worked well, no problems and it did whiten. I bought the full size.

However the rest of the box is a complete waste of space.

I will keep it for now, as I have been a loyal subscriber but allure and beautyfix just went on the chopping block.

Boxy is just kicking everyone’s butt.

FRE is in the Boxy pop up for $9.

Thank you for the review Megan, it has really helped me understand the products. I still have everything still in the Tube, so after reading your review I’m going to take out everything, now understanding what they are for and how they work.
I did swap the Bum mask as mine feels fine already! I received the retinol serum instead of eye cream which I prefer. I’ll use the sunscreen, serum, masks, spray and the whitening toothpaste. I don’t wear nail polish, and the cake mask would not suit my mature skin.
Overall this Tube did not disappoint. Megan your reviews are always in depth with a smattering of humor! I look forward to your next reviews! 🙂

Thanks so much Claire! This was such a nice comment and made me smile. Let me know what you think of the retinol, ok? I am glad you also enjoyed your Tube <3

I have been under the weather and haven’t had a chance to try out the items in the tube yet. Just wondering- does anyone think that the sheet masks and bum Mask are worth the price? I usually top out at about $6 for a sheet Mask. I appreciate anyone’s thoughts.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

I generally don’t pay that much for any sheet mask (regardless of where it is applied!) and I don’t think I would buy another for $16. But I was really happy to see one in the box as a one-time sort of experiment!

I had gastric bypass around 12 years ago and while I have kept off most of the weight, I still have lots of extra skin. My ass is about as flat as a pancake, so I might give the butt Mask a try.

Iggy'sRock

I thought that it was fun- but then it really messed with my skin. My advice: pass.

Reply ButtonReply

Oz

Thanks for the info! I hope they didn’t mess with your skin too much.

I love this box even when some products aren’t for me. I have plenty of family to share with and they love discovering new beauty too. Love the part about the bum mask. I passed my alone to the younger generation whose bums are past saving. I’ll stick to smearing lotion on mine. Next time you get a bum mask, I think Will should have to try it and model it for you. He he he. Then we’ll see who’s laughing.

Next time Will should test the butt mask.

I came close to ordering this box (er, tube) but was put off by the toothpaste. I have sensitive teeth and gums and just can’t use that stuff. If I had been guaranteed that shade of nail polish, though, I would have caved.

Iggy'sRock

The toothpaste was .21 oz. Extremely small. Too small.

I was pretty excited about the nail polish! However, I had painted my nails and sometime later I could smell celery. I looked around, thought about what I had for lunch, nothing…no celery. Another few hours I couldn’t get the smell out of my nose. I happened to look on the website to see what this polish was made of, and either the first or second ingredient was celery seed extract. I hate the smell of celery, I just cant stand it. I loved this color, loved how it looked, but I had to give it away. I knew I would never use it again. The smell of celery was to much.

Reply ButtonReply

TestTube

Caragon,
We apologize for your experience! Celery seed extract improves the appearance of nail ridges, while a blend of peptides, ceramides and biotin support nail structure 😭

Reply ButtonReply

JenM

Thanks for letting me know. I love the smell of celery seed and just tried the nail polish for that. It is now my new favorite polish. Hope you find something else you like.

Wow! I didn’t even notice that. My inner ingredient nerd wonders what benefit that actually gives the polish. Product formulations are wild.

I always think this box is so cool! If I had any need at all for anything makeup or skincare I would sub in a heartbeat!

I also sleep with my hands under my chin, I try to tuck them into my pillowcase or wrap them in my sheet before they go under my chin, and it seems to lessen the number of spots I get on my chin. I’ve been having lots of luck drying them with EradiKate (from the Ulta GWP eons ago), but I should start using my stash of clay masks on the pesky ones!

That chemical sunscreen is bad for the environment. Octocrylene, homosalate, etc = no good. I try to let people know just in case they don’t. I have dark brown skin and most people say they hate the white cast of mineral sunscreens but I believer etude house has one for $7.30 on Amazon. It leaves little to no cast and is made w/other helpful ingredients that keep your face matte. I love it. Entertain the idea of a switch. Also, a lot of sunscreens break me out, but this etude one is good for sensitive skin. Knowing all this, the value of this box is bleh.

Reply ButtonReply

Linda

The sunscreen did break me out, so even though the “value” of that item exceeds the cost of the box, it didn’t add value to me. TBH, I wasn’t really wowed this time by any of the products. But.. here’s to hoping the next one is better! 🙂

I cancelled this subscription after getting two really good tubes and then watching the reviews that have not been great.
