Love With Food Deluxe January 2020 Box Review

On to the items:

Welch's Fruit Snacks (0.8 oz) - Buy 10 for $7.39

So you will see a theme this month, which is that we have received some of these items (not even different flavors) at least 2-3 times before. This is one such. I can't eat them because they have gelatin, so I pass them off to my husband, and he likes them well enough but is puzzled as to why a major supermarket brand is in a snack subscription box. There are usually one or two items in this box that are likely to appeal to children and this is certainly one of those.

Simple Mills Soft Baked Nutty Banana Bread Almond Flour Bar (1.19 oz) - Buy 5 for $5.99

This is a gluten free brand and I find their products kind of hit or miss. I have bought some of their cookies from Whole Foods and enjoyed them quite a bit, but this was not really what I would consider to be "soft baked" unless you are comparing it to a crunchy granola bar. It also didn't have a strong banana flavor. I didn't hate it by any means, but it wasn't that exciting to me, either.

Lesser Evil Paleo Puffs Honey Roasted (1 oz) - Buy 6, 5 oz bags for $21.99

I have to admit, I was not thrilled to see Paleo Puffs. These things show up in food subscriptions all the time and they are not my favorite. But the honey roasted flavor is new to me and I went into it with an open mind and I think this is the best flavor I've tried, by far. I don't know that I would ever go out and buy these (you can get one single bag from Whole Foods if you don't want to order a case) but I would be more excited about seeing this flavor in another food subscription box than some of the others.

Fast Bar Nutrition Bar (1.55 oz) - Buy 5 bars for $16

Ah, the Fast Bar. There are some scientific claims on the package about how eating this allows your body to go into a fasted state on the cellular level and I'm like, no, eating 200+ calories of nuts and honey is not anything near fasting. They also write "patented" on the package but it isn't patented, it is the subject of a patent application relating to a diet for breast cancer patients, where the patent hasn't issued yet. I attribute that to overzealous marketing folks. Anyway, it tastes good, and it has a good texture, but it kind of made my stomach feel heavy for much of the afternoon. I guess it might be good as a last thing to eat before you fast, to keep you filled up for awhile?

Zego Fruit + Chia Bar, Raspberry (25 g) - Buy 12 bars for $16.99

This was a little gritty as chia bars often are, so I don't think it would be particularly appealing to most kids, but I did like the fruit taste, and the combination of fruit and seeds should be a good snack for sustaining energy for awhile without taking in too many calories.

Tomer Kosher Beef Stick (0.9 oz) - Buy 24 for $24.99

I had to pass this along to someone else to enjoy because my husband won't eat meat sticks and I am a vegetarian. You should expect to get something like this in nearly every box, because meat sticks are everywhere right now since they work with a variety of currently-popular diets (keto, paleo, etc.).

Smashmallow Smash Crispy Cinnamon Churro (1.15 oz) - Buy 6 for $5

Sadly, here is a third non-vegetarian item (marshmallows are not generally vegetarian and this does have gelatin). My husband was willing to eat this and he enjoyed it and said I would've liked it as well, if I could've had it. (I have a notorious sweet tooth.) This would probably appeal to kids and isn't precisely healthy, but it's OK to have sweet things in moderation as part of an otherwise healthy diet!

Superseedz Dark Chocolate and Sea Salt (0.5 oz) - Estimated Value $0.75

This wasn't available for sale but I've linked to a main page where other flavors are available. I like pumpkin seeds and I like this brand (though their maple ones are still my favorite, and those are also available at the link in the product name) and this flavor was new to me, so I was happy to see this item!

Thinsters Chocolate Chip Cookie Thins (0.6 oz) - Buy 2, 16 oz bags for $18.99

I am not traditionally a fan of hard or crispy cookies, but these were kind of addictive. They tasted strongly of butter and that is not a complaint, it actually made me like them a lot more.

Beanitos Hint of Lime (1 oz) - Buy 6, 5 oz bags for $21.21

Although I still prefer the old formula of Beanitos to the current one for texture reasons, the flavor of these remains excellent and basically the same as before. This is one of the flavors you can just eat straight from the bag without a dip or topping (or at least I think so).

Emily's Daily Nuts and Fruit (0.85 oz) - Buy 30 bags for $28.99

Here is another one of the products we've received at least 2-3 times before. I mean, I like this (it's nuts and dried fruit and I don't have any allergies and it's clearly vegetarian), but maybe start sending something new, or at least a different mix from the same company, or something?

Mr. Nature Cranberry Trail Mix (1 oz) - Buy 48 bags for $21.50

I could pretty much copy-paste what I said about the previous item here because it all applies for this item as well. These two items always seem to come together and it makes me wonder if Love With Food has an excess of these that they are trying to offload and, if so, they should just put them available for points in the snack shop.

Kuli Kuli Daily Green Boost Apple Cucumber (2.5 fl oz) - Buy 12 for $39.99

My husband said this looked like pond water and was unwilling to try it. (He was right about how it looked, the color is from algae.) It did not taste good and I could not finish it. If you would like the health benefits of moringa, there are better ways (like putting powder in a smoothie, or one of fruity Miracle Tree teas) and for algae I'm just going to suggest pills or one of the RawRev bars with spirulina).

Cheddies Cheddar Cheese Crackers (0.8 oz) - Buy 3.2 oz for $6.99

These are protein-enhanced cheese crackers and they were tasty and the texture was a little different from mass market cheese crackers but still appealing. I can see some circumstances under which I might order these (and there are some other flavors I'd be interested in, as well).

Bare Toasted Coconut Chips (0.85 oz) - Buy 6, 3.3 oz bags for $23.99

I'm always a fan of coconut chips and these were good. There isn't much distinguishing them from other brands (my husband asked if they were from Dang) but I do like them.

Rockin' Ola Granola Cinnamon Flavored Granola Clusters (1 oz) - Buy 6, 48 oz bags for $88.87

This is promoted as being good for schools and food service because it is allergen-free. That's also why I couldn't easily find it in quantities less than about 18 pounds! It is pretty plain, as granola goes, but that may make it better for picky eaters. (When I was a kid I DID NOT want nuts in anything, for example, even though I did not have an allergy, and this is nut-free.)

Verdict: There were 16 items in the January 2020 Love With Food Deluxe Box. There were a couple of items that have been repeated at least 2-3 times, not only the brand but the same exact flavor. There were a few new flavors of things I've had before (Fast Bar, Paleo Puffs, pumpkin seeds) and that was appreciated. The Cheddies crackers were a nice discovery and I did also like the chocolate chip cookies and coconut chips quite a bit. I'm hoping to see a bit less gelatin next month, though.

I really want a box like this but this one looks too “healthy” for me. It all looks pretty tasteless and at that small a snack, I want something that gets me through until a meal.

I’m still on the fence with this box. I want to get a snack sub to send to my son in college, would prefer something that isn’t pure junk food yet is still fun, but this gets mixed reviews and it’s kind of expensive to wind up with a couple to several items per box that are *meh*

Very impressed that you know the difference between filing a patent application (i.e., “patent pending”), and actually holding a patent (i.e. “patented”)!

It’s kind of my job (for the past 7.5 years I’ve worked at IP law firms). I just past the patent office exam and will be a patent agent as soon as I receive my registration number.

Congratulations on passing the Patent Bar Exam!
