Barkbox Muttcracker December 2019 dog subscription box review

BarkBox is a reader-favorite monthly subscription box for dogs.

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (my smaller dog weighs 12 lbs and my pug is closer to 28). We recently adopted a 50 lb standard poodle, so we might try a new size in the future!

FYI: Two of my dogs are quite old! Piper (the minpin) has to eat soft food and has trouble with hard treats. Charlie is a pug, and a glutton who will eat LITERALLY anything. They both still really enjoy toys, though it has been years since either of them managed to destroy anything.

If you have a younger pup or just one who needs toys of the rough and tumble variety, I highly recommend trying the Super Chewer subscription (read our reviews to learn more!).

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

December 2019 BarkBox "The Muttcracker" Review

Included this month was a cute card you can send to a furry friend for a free BarkBox!

The details behind our items this month were printed inside, on the box lining.

The December box included 2 toys, 2 bags of treats, and a chew - this is close to what you can expect with your monthly subscription, though it does vary for everyone once in a while.

A lot of these items are marked as 'Sold Out' on the BarkBox app - but they have a little 'As Seen In BarkBox' section of the BarkShop where you can grab items featured in monthly themes.

Dance of the Berry Dazzled Duck Treats, 4.5 oz

My dogs like any treat I have ever offered them, but there is something about duck that gets them extra wound up. I think it is because it isn't super common in their food and snack rotations. These little sticks were semi-soft and didn't have a super-strong smell (thank you!).

Obviously these were a hit with Charlie (you could toss a pebble at him and he would eat it) but Piper also really liked these and she could chew them pretty easily, even with only one tooth left.

Simple Duck Jerky, 4.5 oz

Yay! More duck! These are flat rectangle pieces that were a little harder than the other treats this month. For this reason, I decided Tucker could do the testing, though Charlie also joined in.

Such focus.

Nikolai the Nutcracker - Retail Value $10.00

This nutcracker is so cute! He has a chewy plastic interior that you can stick treats or peanut butter inside for playtime with your pups. He also has an ornament loop, you know, if you feel like your dog destroying your Christmas tree!

Charlie loved this. He is less and less interested in toys as he ages, but hide treats inside and he is enraptured. I am going to put some peanut butter inside next time for him!

Mikhail the Mouse King - Retail Value $10.00

Tucker has really blossomed into such a toy enthusiast. It makes me so happy because when we first brought him home he didn't know how to play with them or even that he was allowed to. His favorite toys usually have crinkle and squeaks, and this cute mouse king had both!

He still hasn't managed to destroy a BarkBox toy, which is pretty impressive since we order the 'small' assortment and he is a bigger boy.

Bark Duck Stick

Finally, our chew! I always reserve these for Tucker since the little ones can't chew them well anymore. I like to give them to him when we are alone or perhaps after a long walk.

Verdict: BarkBox is always so much fun. We were a little late getting to this one due to holiday travel, but the dogs loved it just the same. As Tucker starts to enjoy toys more and more, I am so appreciative that we have new ones arrive each month with new features. I actually changed our subscription to "medium" for January since he seems to take more interest than Piper and Charlie, which are mainly in this review for the treats. I am excited to see the difference next box!

To Wrap Up:

We get the medium box (I have a 30 pound cocker spaniel/chow mix who got the medium box and then adopted a 13 pound Yorkiepoo) and we got the same two toys! Weird that the small and medium boxes were the same. Maybe you actually get the medium box based on Charlie? They only base the box on one dog, the “main” dog on the account. Anyway, medium is probably best for you anyway, considering you have a little Piper and a big Tucker!

My Yorkiepoo is a pretty tough tenacious little dude who can handle the bigger toy size so we’ve stuck with the medium. Figure him trying to jump up on the couch with a toy that’s too big for him (and it taking a few tries) is better than me trying to pry a small toy out of my medium dog’s big mouth while trying to play her favorite games, tug and fetch!

Oh if this is the medium box, can you note that in the top description for future reviews? Will help people who are trying to decide between small and medium. It would be great to see the small box, too! *Hint hint* BUCKLES WHO I KNOW IS MISSED BY MANY!

Alot of the toys are the same for medium and small boxes. We get one of each and both dogs get some of the same toys just smaller in size.
