Allure Beauty Box December 2019 Review

A handy booklet has all the product info inside.

Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick in ‘Bohemian’, 0.11 oz – FULL SIZE! Retail Value $20.00

I will admit that I am not a fan of this matte formula. It just dried my lips out so badly! I tend to prefer satin finish lip products in general though, and I have matte-loving friends who SWEAR by this formula. I am really taken by how pretty this color is though. A deep wine-berry-red that is pure drama! It is winter-red perfection, so much so, in fact, I decided to try this with a balm on top to make it more of a satin finish. I absolutely love it this way, and the shade is so flattering to my ashy blonde hair and fair skin.

Delicious!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Clear Brow Gel, 2.5 ml – Estimated Value $7.01 (Buy 7.85 ml for $22.00)

I have been growing my eyebrows out for YEARS because I severely over-plucked them in high school. I generally rely on a similar gel but with a tint to it. Over the last few weeks, I have been reaching more and more for clear gels, so this arrived at the perfect time. I love any brow product that applies with a spoolie because it makes it so effortless to comb through and “arrange” my brows. This clear gel worked really well and didn’t leave my brows feeling like I had any product in them, while still giving me a polished level of control.

First Aid Beauty Hello FAB Coconut Skin Smoothing Primer, 50 ml – FULL SIZE! Retail Value $28.00

I love a box with loads of full-size items, so this one is going really well! This is a coconutty scented primer with a featherlight feel! It is one of those formulas that absorbs really fast, and doesn’t leave much of any feeling behind in terms of texture. It does add smoothness to my skin and a little radiance boost, but the kind that comes from hydration rather than obvious shimmer particles (though this does have super tiny micro pearls!). I actually liked this alone on my face for the days I forgo foundation but still want to look like my skin is healthy and vibrant. If I could change one thing about this product, it would actually be that coconut scent, but I can live with it!

OUAI Texturizing Hair Spray, 1.4 oz – Mini Size! Retail Value $12.00

Hello, favorite hair product brand. I love you. This little bottle holds a dry shampoo/hair spray hybrid that I love, especially on those days when my hair somehow already has a perfect wave. I have dry, thick hair, and I love playing up its natural texture. A few sprays of this finger-combed through my hair (I prefer to apply flipped over, upside down for volume) gives my hair so much va-va-voom! It also sucks up most of the oil on my roots and smells absolutely incredible!

Verdict: This Allure box has a total value of around $107.01, which is a stellar value for a $15 box. I think this is one of my favorites yet! I loved the Moonchild palette so much. I don’t think I ever would have even swatched this on a Sephora visit because I would have assumed the shades were too “wild” for me. That couldn’t be more wrong! I also loved the shade of the lipstick, though I do have to alter it a little to improve the formula for my personal taste. The brow gel was one of those low-key must-haves that I am always happy to have more of. Who wants to buy brow gel? I haven’t in over a year. The FAB primer is a solid product, and, of course, anything OUAI makes me very happy indeed!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

  1. I’m not trying to be rude or dumb, but I’m wondering why ABH is considered so great when there is tons of her stuff at TJ MAXX. Is it just an overproduction issue? Before Christmas my local TJ had tons is these highlighter palettes. Today they still have about a dozen, and they are on clearance for $13.00. Tons o lip pies and other ABH products, too.

  2. Finally broke down after years of reading the allure box reviews because of the hot tools deal. I was just wondering, did Allure stop including a vinyl pouch in each box?

  3. Has anyone not received their box from Amazon yet? My estimated delivery date has been updated TWICE now, and starting today I’m seeing a message on the order page telling me if I don’t receive the box by the 27th (I ordered on the 7th), then I can request a refund. I’m going to be really bummed if I don’t get this box.

    • This is my first time ordering this box. If you go on their IG page they tell you they will send your box “20 days (not including weekends or holiday), to send. I ordered mine Dec. 8th, but last week received a shipping notification. Try contacting them that way as their site stinks!!!!

    • Still waiting on mine from December. Did you ever get yours?

    • Charlotte if you ordered from Amazon you should have received it pretty quickly. Allure takes like a month to get your first box to you but Amazon is usually less than a week. DId you ever get your box?

    • I just got my box today ordered dec 21st and I didn’t have the hot tools coupon in it. apparently, they run out of stock. I told them that is the only reason why I signed up in the first place

  4. I received ‘trust issues’ in the lip and holy crap do I look horrible in it. I’m not super disappointed because as the reviewer here states, the matte formula isn’t the best. Some people may like it, but it dries down in a very unflattering way and cracks almost immediately. If I try to put on a balm before hand, everything separates. Do not recommend that formula at all.
Excited about the full sized fab primer, the highlight palette (so different then what I usually reach for!) and to try the scalp exfoliator. So overall I would say it’s a good box:)

    • Seconding this! I was meh about how it looked on me (I feel like sub boxes have been SUPER heavy on brown and purple toned lippies recently) but the formula was just NOT good. Drying and for me, it wore way more unevenly than any formula I’ve tried recently. Oh well! It’s kinda cute layered and I found that balanced out some of my problems with the formula.

  5. I just received my box and I love it! 3 full sizes and a brand I love ABH! I got the same AB primer and Christophe Robin scalp mask which I love and use. I am so happy with Allure box as always. This is such a steal compared to Ipsy, Birchbox, Play and Macys for about the same price where you only get sample sizes.

    • I got the same variation as well and super happy about it. I got the dark lipstick as well and while I love a dark lip I don’t love this formula. I put it on and my 20 month old said “scared. Wash face”. Hahaha-yeah buddy me too!

I have another ABH lipstick that’s a few seasons old and the formula seems to be better. I also think the formula changes a bit when those matte formulas go very dark.

  6. Anyone else still waiting on their box? I haven’t even gotten a shipping notification yet.

    • I just got my shipping notification tonight!

    • I got a box somewhere between Thursday and today (didn’t check mail,) but it was a November box?? And my account shows a box still en route. Pretty sure I skipped the November box.

      So I’m confused.

      • Apparently they accidentally charged/sent a November box (which I’d skipped) once my sub reactivated. So my December box is on the way! And great customer service, they refunded me for the extra month. 🙂

    • I got my shipping notice around 12/12.
Couple days before I resubscribed through Amazon because I wasn’t sure what was going on. The Allure CSR was pleasant as usual, but the information was inconclusive.
I should have both boxes by 12/18.

      • Got both boxes today and they are IDENTICAL.

Kind of a plus since I don’t like the FAB primer/moisturizer or any kind of hair styling product.

But I was hoping for one of each on the lip colors.

        Oh well.

      • I was lucky enough to get both variants (two boxes).
One box came via the Amazon Black Friday price $7.50.
The other is the “Please stay 4 months for $12.”
I’m often not happy with the lack of personalization.
It was a total shock and surprise as I usually get identical boxes.
        Bohemian is my favorite.
Was happy to receive both the face moisturizer and primer, but the primer is my favorite.
        December was my favorite yet!

    • Still waiting, too.

  7. The
Box was great for $8.50 through amazon loved the moonchild palette , liked everything except the shampoo scrub rather have gotten quai, did get a nice color lipstick and clear brow gel and First aid moisturizer pretty solid deal allure stepping up a bit it’s been awhile

  8. Amazon Allure came. It includes FAB face moisterizor , ABH lipstick in Bohemian, and Christophe Robin scrub along with non variant items of course .

    • Thanks for sharing this–I’ve been wanting to try subbing through Amazon and Bohemian is a tad lighter than Trust Issues (works better for me), so I’m Amazon bound now!

      • I was with Amazon for a few months and they did okay.

It’s best to subscribe early in the month as they use that as your ship date.

      • Last year i got a free gift. There were earrings in my box…prob for being subbed for over 2 years. No extra gift this time though… Bummer.

    • Can you please clarify about the FAB moisturizer? Both variants are moisturizers but the coconut is also a primer, and it’s my Holy Grail Primer. Does the Amazon version have the Coconut Primer/moisturizer or the straight up moisturizer without primer?

      • I sub through amazon and thankfully got the moisturizer not the primer. Sorry to not help in your decision.

    • Just wanted to share that I sub through Amazon and got the FAB primer instead of moisturizer.

      • I received the Coconut Priming Moisturizer. I use this regularly as my Summer moisturizer if I wear make-up or not. It doesn’t do my super dry skin much good in the Winter. I received Bohemian as the lip color… horrible for me. And the formula is so drying. I wish Allure would quit dumping these crazy shades in these boxes. A nice lip oil would have been a great idea with the upcoming cold months.

      • Lip oil! Exactly! I just bought Liliah B lip oil from Sephora. Really good, color last long time and moisturizing!

  9. Thanks for the awesome review. I can’t wait to get this box!

    • You are welcome HB! Hope you love it too. 🙂

  10. Mine never, ever comes until the end of the month. MSA gets theirs and had time to review 2-3 weeks before I ever get mine. The ABH palette is at TJ Maxx for 14.99 right now so the box is a good deal.

    • If I sign up for the MSA special allure subscription will I also get the hot tools December special?

  11. This box was too makeup heavy for me, but I was afraid of skipping because I get directly from Allure and I am afraid of my subscription getting messed up, lol. But both of full sized ABH items will make nice holiday gifts.

    • Based on the spoiler in the magazine, January is going to be basically all skincare.

      Patience!

  12. For $7.50 not too bad happy I got one

    • How did you get the box for 7.50?

  13. I’m so getting this!

  14. Glad I didn’t get this box. I don’t like ABH color or formula. Also, I don’t want any more highlighters and don’t want to use it as an eyelid color. Already have an actual eye shadow for that.

  15. i’m so glad I did not get this December box…I already have all these products once..

  16. I’m planning on using the highlighter pallete as eyelid colors! Imagine how pretty it will be in spring! This is truly a great box!

    • I am too! that is the only thing I do with highlighter, I am oily so adding shine is not what I want to do! But as eyeshadow it is perfect, and really simple.

      • I’m oily too but I’ve figured out ways to layer products where my oil is no longer a problem. Serum, moisturizer, primer/spray, foundation, powder, setting spray that I dab into the skin… there’s days I don’t even have to touch up!!!

Having said all that, I’m still scared to try these colors but I needed the lippie – the ABH liquid lip Is my favorite!

    • They certainly will be perfect for spring. I love the sheer wash effect on my lids so much!

  17. I didn’t know that FAB primer was going to be full sized. Darn, that’s a shame, because that product breaks me out/looks awful lol.

    That lippie though 😍

I can’t believe this is all only $7.50 with the Black Friday special!

    • Are the FAB Primer and Ouai Spray variations? The booklet pictured seems to say so, but MSA didn’t mention any variation this month, neither does Allure’s ads!

      • I think so. I saw somewhere that the Amazon version of the box has a FAB moisturizer and a scalp scrub. There are also two shades of the ABH lip (MSA has those posted under the spoiler post).

  18. I’m so excited for this box! I didn’t know the palette was highlighter, but that actually sounds really interesting. I have enough primer to last a lifetime, but I like first aid beauty so maybe I will keep it anyway. What a great sub for only 15 bucks.

  19. I hope that you get the sea salt scrub thru Amazon…
THis was such a great review Megan, thank you for your honesty. ABH liquid lipsticks are very drying…but the color and the way it wears always makes it worth the effort to go for a balm underneath or top with a lipgloss.

    • Amazon posted picture of box they are sending and they are sending the Christophe Robin scrub and face moisturizer FAB as their varient . I am getting my Amazon Allure either Tomorrow or Friday I will confirm what I get .

      • Thanks!

      • I get my Allure box through Amazon, and I’m a little upset because I literally just bought that FAB moisturizer during Dermstore’s Black Friday sale! Oh well; it’s my Holy Grail AM moisturizer, so it’ll be good to have a spare.

  20. Fantastic review! I’m with you on everything. I wouldn’t have even given that palette a second glance but now instant to try the colours as eye shadow. I live how matte lippy looks on other people but on me it just makes me look dead and it shows all my lip creases.
My fav hair brand too!! It’s to that they realized ppl use dry shampoo as a styling agent and not just to freshen up.
    I’m glad I subscribed!

    • Agreed, great review Megan!
