GQ Best Stuff Fall 2019 subscription box review for him

GQ Best Stuff Box
3.1 overall rating

The GQ Best Stuff Box is a quarterly men's subscription from GQ magazine that features products the editors have tested and love. Although this box is geared towards men, I personally find most of the items to be delightfully unisex! Each box is promised to be valued at over $200.

There's a little fold-out information card/poster.

Dsquared2 Wood Pour Homme Cologne, 0.17 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.45 (Buy a full-size 3.4 fl oz bottle for $89.00)

Colognes are always welcome in any subscription box I open! I love layering them with my more feminine perfumes to give a little sophistication and depth. Will doesn't really wear any scents, but I am more than happy to claim this one for my collection. This wood-inspired scent is a blend of citrus, spices, amber, and, of course, deep woods! It could easily be worn in any season, but there is something extra special about a scent like this in the fall months when the leaves are extra crispy and the nights get longer.

Jack Black Turbo Wash Energizing Cleanser, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $2.30 (Buy a 10 oz bottle for $23.00)

This is a wake-up sort of cleanser! It has a strong fragrance of stimulating eucalyptus, rosemary, and juniper. You can use it on both your body and scalp, and Will loved how herbal it was. He said it left his pores tingling and his skin feeling "incredibly clean and minty." Will also suffers from sinus issues and he loved how this strong herbal smell opened his sinuses up and energized him in the morning.

Proraso Shave Cream, 0.3 oz - Estimated Value $0.58 (Buy 5.2 oz for $10.00)

Will has to shave his face clean daily for work, so he is always on the lookout for new shaving creams because his face gets so dry. This formula was really creamy and moisturizing, giving him a very close shave. It has a very strong menthol and eucalyptus scent that he specifically mentioned he loved. I didn't realize what a eucalyptus fan Will was!

Grown Alchemist Hydra-Repair Moisturizer, 2.2 fl oz - Full Size! Retail Value $49.00

I have been trying to get Will to use a daily moisturizer for years now, but it has never stuck. And in one of the unfair mysteries of the universe, he just keeps getting better looking while I am drowning myself in creams, tonics, and serums. This is one of those GOOP-approved brands that I am happy to take off of his hands. For me, it is a great weight for wearing daily under my makeup, it has a matte (!) finish and a beautiful smell that is a blend of geraniums and greens. I also really appreciate the super minimal vibes from this Australian brand and the fact that this cream is so botanically inspired.

by Humankind Shampoo Bar Soap, 4 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $12.95

I have been buying shampoo bars on and off for a few years now. I wish I could say it was out of concern for plastic waste, but Will actually just loves them. LUSH has his favorite formula, but this was also a winner. The citrus-lavender scent is very natural and the bar itself gives a deep, deep clean. Of course, this bar doesn't lather quite like traditional shampoos, but it still gets soapy and is very easy to use, even on thick hair. With additional scents like lemongrass and peppermint, and a subscription service (hello!), this was an awesome introduction to this brand.

New Republic Kurt Leather Sneakers - Retail Value $89.00

Ahh, the hero item! Will basically only wears all white or black Adidas All-Stars, so I knew he would probably like the styling of these, too. My guy is the definition of minimal, so I know he will love the clean white leather and crisp lines. Though I put my order in on 10/1, these shoes will start shipping on 10/21, so I will be eagerly awaiting their arrival. Taxes and shipping are included in the card value, which is really awesome and since my total was $0.00 there was no requirement to input a credit card number. Ordering was literally so easy! I will update this review when Will's shoes arrive.

CB2 Gift Code - Potential Value $30.00

CB2 and GQ have partnered to release a line of super sleek housewares and furniture inspired by the modern guy. In celebration, this catalog was included, showcasing all the CB2 x GQ items, along with a voucher code for $30 off a full-priced order. I was really happy to see that you could use this code across the entire site, so if nothing from the collab catches your eye, you still have a ton of options. There are loads of throw pillows, decorative accents, lighting pieces, and amazement to browse! I did end up deciding to order a pillow:

I used my code to purchase the 18" Lumi Pillow. It will look amazing on our leather couch! Since it shipped for free, I spent about $15 after my code discount on a really great new piece!

AXE Messy Look Matte Hair Wax, 2.64 oz - Full Size! Retail Value $6.97

Will doesn't use many hair products, but pomades and waxes are one he goes through quite a lot. I get loads of them in boxes, so he gets to try out different brands and we save money! Winning! AXE is often associated with overpowering body sprays, but this formula had a simple clean scent and worked really well in his coarse hair. It was creamier than a straight-up wax formula and gave him structure without too much of a "done" finish.

Bravo Sierra Antibacterial Body Wipes, 3-pack - Estimated Value $3.15 (Buy a 10 pack for $10.50)

My husband works outside all day, year-round, and he can get really gross. It is a reality! I have tossed unscented baby wipes in his pack before to wipe off his face and neck on the go, but these large and thick wipes are a total upgrade. They smell so good I would honestly buy the scent in a body spray. Think vetiver, woods, and a little mint! They are also antibacterial, so he can wipe his hands off as well before a rushed lunch.

Bombas Ribbed Dress Socks (One pair. Colors vary.) - Retail Value $15.00

Though Will is rarely in a suit these days, whenever he needs one we can never find dress socks. Instead of rushing to Target or Macy's in a panic before work, I will add these emerald green ones to his sock drawer in hopes that next time he is frantically searching for a pair, he stumbles upon them. They are really well made and have a nice tight knit.

Rains Waterproof Toiletry Bag (Colors vary) - Retail Value $34.00

Finally, our last item is a navy toiletry bag. I actually replaced Will's old work pack with this one, and stashed those wipes in it so he can keep them closeby. I also added in a small toothbrush and toothpaste tube, as well as the Axe wax. I like that this bag is minimal, waterproof, and feels tough. It will also be super easy to wash out and clean when needed!

Verdict: I have really loved this subscription each time I have reviewed it, and so has Will. It just has so many things and the brands are always great! I am very excited for his sneakers to arrive. What a great hero item to include in a men's box! Alone, they account for way over the cost of the box, making this a great value. Depending on if you use your CB2 code or not, the overall value this quarter is as low as $217.40 or as high as $247.40, both of which are way awesome for a $50 box. Though I might have poached the Grown Alchemist cream and I was way more excited about a new throw pillow, the majority of these items will be things Will will use and enjoy, which makes me really happy.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, this box is active right now! The FAQ notes: “The specific box you receive will depend on the date you signed up and how that corresponds with the shipping deadlines of the quarterly boxes. You may contact customer service at: 1-800-999-6536 for the specifics.” I would give them a call to be 100% sure!

Value Breakdown: Each of the 11 items in the $49.99 box has an average cost of $4.54.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I went online today (11/18) to check the status of the shoes I ordered back on 10/9 and it showed that the order was cancelled on 11/8. No email from them, no explanation and it is IMPOSSIBLE to reach them.
GQ was NO help, only saying that they will no longer do business with them.
Ridiculous
HORRIBLE customer service on both ends.

Thanks for the helpful review! After reading it, I caved and bought this for my soon to be brother-in-law for Christmas. It recently arrived and it’s going to be the perfect gift! Super impressed by the curation of this box. Great mix between classic and on-trend items and everything in it feels high quality.

Anyone know if you order the ‘gift’ instead of ‘quarterly’ if it is just a single one time purchase or if it also starts a subscription? I tried asking their customer service but got a response that didn’t have anything to do with the question- so I don’t really want to deal with having to cancel a subscription through them if they have incompotent customer service.

I was just looking into this for the Winter 2019 box; they have a one-time purchase gift option, but then it’s $79.99 for a single box. I really don’t like that their only cancellation option is to call them, but I may go that route just so I’m paying $49.99 instead. Doesn’t seem worth the extra $30 to go the one-time route to me.
