Skylar August 2019 perfume subscription box review

Skylar Scent Club
4.2 overall rating
5 Ratings | 1 Reviews

Skylar Scent Club is a monthly perfume subscription that includes one limited-edition clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free scent.

The founder, Cat, became especially conscious of product ingredients while working for The Honest Company and quickly realized she couldn't find a truly clean perfume she enjoyed. She also realized tons of other perfume lovers were looking for the same thing, so Skylar was born!

August 2019 Skylar Scent of the Month: Love in Paradise

This is my second month of this subscription and I am again blown away by the gorgeous and thoughtful packaging. Each month the rollerball comes in a little scent "book" complete with a bookmark you can store inside with space to jot down your thoughts about each fragrance.

It's worth noting that Skylar scents are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. They are also made in the US (in Los Angeles, to be exact!) and have no synthetic dyes. If you are someone who is super ingredient-conscious and want more info, check out the Skylar Dirty List and their perfume philosophy.

Let's check out this month's scent!

Love in Paradise, 10 ml - Retail Value $29.00 ($20.00 for club members)

Scent Notes: Sweet Pineapple, Island Papaya, Pikake Flower

If you read any of my reviews dealing with perfumes, you likely know I am not crazy about fruity or foody scents. They can so often feel artificial or inexpensive to my nose. I expected much more from Skylar and happily, they delivered. While this is not a scent I would personally purchase for myself, I do have to admit that I found it charming. I think the flowers are what made me throw my hands up and admit that, fine, I did actually enjoy this very tropical and fruity perfume. Don't get me wrong, you cannot escape the pineapple and papaya. These fruits are the main notes here, and they are so blissfully summery and beachy you will need a Mai Tai or two. What makes the scent work in my opinion is the golden Pikake floral note. This is a type of jasmine flower and it gives all that fruit a girliness that I really found endearing and made what could have easily been a 100% fruit bomb scent a floral complexity that made it feel more sophisticated.

I tried layering it with the Salt Air scent from last month and really liked it! I think the added salty and ocean elements made this much more of a scent I would reach for. One of my favorite things about this brand is that they encourage scent layering to create a fragrance that is uniquely yours. I have found that they also mix well with some of my old favorites, adding fresh notes and unexpected elements.

It is also worth noting that when you first apply this scent, you will likely smell the carrier alcohol if you sniff right away. I promise all of that will disappear as soon as a few seconds pass and it dries. Organic sugar cane alcohol is a healthy alternative to other commonly used carriers but it can sometimes cause a scent to smell a little sharper than some more traditional perfumes in those first few moments.

Skylar perfumes usually feel lighter than so many others due to the natural and clean ingredients used to make them. I found this one to have more staying power than I am used to from this brand, which was a pleasant surprise. I noticed the notes for a little over 4 hours on my wrists.

Verdict: Skylar is still one of my newest subscriptions, but I get so excited to see this box! I love perfume so much and this subscription is a great way to add in some clean scents to my collection. The packaging is just gorgeous, making it a true treat-yourself experience when you open it. It feels very, very special. While this scent was not one I would have picked for myself, I do have to admit that there is something about it. I am going to add it to my collection and experiment with layering. I think one of my favorite things about my Skylar experience so far is that the scents I have gotten as so incredibly seasonal. This affordable plan allows me to be much more experimental with the scents I wear each season because it is much easier to justify a $20 bottle of summer sunshine than a super seasonal $135 full-size bottle of fragrance that I can only use for a few months out of the year.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I gave in and subscribed. I knew the scent might be a little too sweet and fruity for my taste, but it mellows out the longer I have it on. It’s growing on me! And the packaging is stunning. Can’t wait for next month!

I’m so glad MSA put this sub on my radar. And Megan: I love your scent descriptions.

Just wanted to mention: their customer service is great. I fell in love with the Salt Air scent last month and asked if I could purchase another. They gave me the option of either adding it to my monthly shipment, or swapping it out for this month’s scent. Great first impression of Skylar!

Hi Megan, great review!

The packaging looks similar to how Margot Elena wraps her stuff up–beautiful and great for gift giving.

I would have likely given this scent away due to the fruity aspect. Same with the ocean/salt scent of last month. And that is why at $20 a month and only one item, I’m still hesitant to buy the sub! It’s my weird, picky self that would make it hard to be happy with scents that I’ve already identified as not my ‘style.’ I’m too rigid, lol!

I consider myself picky too Sara, so I will never, ever, fault anyone for that! The upside is that that pretty packaging makes them wonderfully giftable!

Oh and if you look closely at the ingredients list you’ll see it actually has vanilla and ylang ylang notes too!

I DO love vanilla and ylang ylang! It IS tempting now, lol!

It’s funny that I signed up for this sub for the first time this month because the fruity description was calling to me. Although I still do like it, it actually smells more like coconut to me “fresh” (maybe it’s the combination of pineapple and the other scents that just makes it seem more like pina colada scent to me) and dries down to the flowery scent. So it’s a lot more floral than I expected too. It’s a nice balance because I’m not usually a floral person.

Hi Megan! Do you keep the boxes the perfumes come in? Just asking because they would look super cute lined up on a shelf like little books. 🙂 I thought about that after the fact (I always discard packaging right away). I probably wouldn’t do it since I lack the space, but I think it would look really pretty with them all lined up.

Unfortunately, this box made the cut when I cut a good number of subs last month 🙁 I’ll really miss trying the new scents, but I’m sure I’ll re-subbing sometime next year and giving it a good run for around 6 months. Until then, I’ll continue to frequent your reviews of the box 🙂

You know I do Luna! I mean, I only have two so far, but it’s going to be like a marvelous library of perfumes someday!
