Norlii Review August 2019

Norlii is a bi-monthly home subscription box filled with Scandinavian home decor and accessories. I always marvel at the great curation of the best from minimal brands like Normann Copenhagen and others. There’s always a great balance of form and function in this $69.95 (+ shipping) subscription.

You’ll get an info sheet with each box that talks about the theme and included items. This month the theme is “Crayfish Feast” (a Swedish tradition) and features tablewares from the Scandinavian brand, House Doctor. Apparently, fishing for crayfish became so popular in Sweden in the 19th century that they had to limit the fishing season to begin only after August 8th which is what makes this the time of year to have such a feast in celebration.

House Doctor Rustic Bowls, Set of 4 – Total Retail Value $40.00 ($10/each)

I don’t normally go for rustic-style ceramics but these small bowls are gorgeous! I love the rough bluish-white glaze against the dark ceramic and I am finding the imperfect shape rather charming. Each bowl is unique but has a diameter of about 4.5 inches and a depth of 1.5 inches. The info sheet suggests using these bowls as “rinsing bowls” which I assume is for your hands after eating boiled crayfish (with salt and dill) without utensils. Alternately, you can use the petite bowls for mayo which is the only other side served with the delicacy besides knækbrød (crispbread). I’ll most likely use these cute dishes for things like salsa or guacamole, but now I am definitely craving some boiled crayfish!

House Doctor Linen Napkins, Set of 4 – Retail Value $55.00

Wow, okay. I had no idea how pricy linen napkins could be. These are actually made in India but are designed by House Doctor. I love the soft crinkled look of linen and this natural color is perfect for my neutral home decor. I’ve not had the best luck washing linen shirts in the past, but these say they’re machine washable and can be tumbled dry, so that is a relief. A set of four goes perfectly with the bowl set, of course, and allows to have a nice setting for a small group. These will certainly come in handy when eating crayfish with your hands!

House Doctor Lana Vase with Stand – Retail Value $23.00

I was a little surprised to see a vase again so soon in Norlii, although this one is quite different from the one I got back in April. The glass vase is thick-walled and sits in a metal stand which makes it look ripe for science. Rather plain on its own, I really like it once it has some green foliage in it! This looks fantastic as a centerpiece to the accompanied tabletop items and can house fresh flowers or random festive leaves alike. It came packed well in its own box which I’m thankful for since it came a long way!

House Doctor Small Bamboo Spoons, Set of 12 – Retail Value $9.98 USD (9,00)

These are so gosh-darn adorable! While they are suggested to be used for your Crayfish Feast along with your other tableware, I can’t help but want to use them for various beauty applications. This set of 12 mini spoons are made of 100% bamboo and each one is 9 cm and can be reused if hand-washed. They’re food-safe so they can be used at the dinner table as well as, say, mixing a clay mask. 😉

Verdict: I just love this month’s Norlii box! It was fun to learn about the Swedish tradition of Crayfish Feasts and get some minimal yet warm table decor that could help host such an event. The bowls are just so beautiful and definitely my favorite of the box. With the four (groups) of items, the retail value of this box is around $127.98 which is well over the $76.95 cost.

            1. It’s interesting that the bowls are made in China and the napkins in India. Maybe it’s Scandinavia themed but not from Scandinavia?

              • Kinda like Oui Please rarely has anything actually made in France.

              • Hi Kc- I agree that the items being made in other countries is a bit of a bummer, but I think this box is dedicated to Scandinavian design as opposed to craftsmanship. All of this month’s items were designed by House Doctor though, which a Scandinavian brand.

            2. I love everything in this box! I must buy those bowls….oh and that vase, and the spoons. This month a real winner.

            3. I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE that vase. Plus, the base could also be used to hold a small plant pot.

I do love the curation, though the cost just covers the items and shipping. So, I’m not sure I’d be interested in a subscription. I’d rather just order the exact items and colors I want.

            4. This is a review I look forward to each time. Everything is simple and beautiful. I’m on beauty product overload, so this may become my new subscription box…

              • Such a lovely box, right? It’s the perfect home subscription in my opinion!
