KnitCrate Membership July 2019 Review

KnitCrate Membership is the flagship box from the KnitCrate brand. In my opinion, it’s the best box to start with if you’re looking to expand your knitting knowledge or expand your yarn stash! The yarn they send is from one of their in-house brands, and it’s always very high quality.

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 booklet cover

KnitCrate Inspirations Booklet, July 2019 – Retail Value $40.00

The pattern booklet included a download code so that you could add the PDF version to your Ravelry library. When I used the code it listed the booklet as having a value of $40, but at the time of our review, the booklet is not currently for sale as a separate item.

This month, when you go to retrieve the online download code, you get an extra bonus pattern! The pattern is designed to go with this month’s Artisan pop up shop.

The theme this month is “Circus Circus,” and it’s a really neat thing is that this theme and some of the yarns featured this month were designed in conjunction with a KnitCrate subscriber who won a competition last year! I think designing a KnitCrate box would be quite a dream, wouldn’t it? The yarn colors featured this month seem like an absolutely perfect representation of a circus – they capture the nostalgia of a big top and bright colors wonderfully.

This is the first month since KnitCrate launched their “Color Vibe” options, where you get to choose which color family you would like to receive. Coordinating with those three color options are three colorways available this month: Pachyderm (All Natural Color Vibe), a deep navy; Light Up (Energize Me Color Vibe), a bright cherry red; and Flying Trapeze (Chill Out Color Vibe), a soft minty aqua. Each subscriber will receive two skeins of one of these colors.

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 crochet pattern

The KnitCrate Membership box always has one knitting pattern and one crochet pattern included. I love this inclusivity for both crafts. The knitting pattern is a pair of fingerless mitts that feature a faux-cable design, and the crochet pattern is a beautiful, lace cowl. While neither pattern screams summertime to me, I think both patterns are very versatile and would make for quick projects. See below for more of my thoughts on the knit pattern!

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 back of booklet

The back of the booklet shows a sneak peek of the theme for August – it will be “Take Wing,” and I can’t wait to see what they come up with from this color palette!

The booklet also contains two patterns for the Sock Membership Crate box. MSA will no longer be reviewing the Sock Crate box, but you can find out more information about this box by visiting the KnitCrate website.

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 skeins

Knitologie Glowing Worsted by KnitCrate in color “Flying Trapeze” – Retail Value $48.00 ($24.00 per skein)

Note: This color is currently sold out, but the alternate colorways of Pachyderm and Light Up are still available for purchase.

I received the color “Flying Trapeze,” which is the cool-toned color for the month. It’s a muted aqua green color, and I love the minty vibe this color gives off. It was the color I was hoping for this month, so I was so excited to open my box and see this! The yarn has a slight sheen to it due to the silk content, and it’s so gorgeous.

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 yarn label

The Glowing Worsted base from KnitCrate is made of 40% Superwash Merino, 30% silk, and 30% alpaca. That is such a luxurious blend of fibers, and you can tell that from the moment you touch this yarn! It’s exquisitely soft and has incredible drape.

Each skein contains 150 yards in 100 grams, and it is a worsted weight yarn.

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 stitch marker packaging

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 stitch marker

Elephant Stitch Marker – Retail Value $3.00 (Buy a pack of 8 for $17.00)

KnitCrate is now including extras in all of their boxes, and I love this addition to the box! This month they sent an elephant stitch marker. First of all, the elephant goes along so perfectly with the circus theme this month! How cute is this little guy? Secondly, this stitch marker is awesome because it is on a lobster clasp (instead of a simple ring). This means that it can be used for either knitting or crochet!

KnitCrate Membership July 2019 mitten progress

Here’s my progress on the Ringleader fingerless mitts for this month! The pattern is super simple to follow and I love the faux-cable pattern. The yarn has fuzzed up quite a bit just from working with it and keeping it in my project bag, but it’s so soft that I don’t mind the extra pilling.

Here’s a close-up of the pattern. The color is really beautiful and changes with different lighting. I can’t wait to wear them this winter!

Verdict: I thought this was a great KnitCrate box! I love getting to try new yarn bases, and this super luxurious blend is no exception. The theme was so fun and I enjoyed that all of the items went along so well with it. I also really appreciated that we were sent a cute extra that went along with the theme so nicely! If you are a knitter or crocheter who is open to trying new types of yarn, this would be a great subscription box to check out! For $24.99, we received two skeins of yarn and four knitting and crochet patterns (plus a bonus e-pattern!) with a total retail value estimated around $91.00. I think this is an amazing value for what you receive, since the high-end, premium yarn is usually around $25-35 per skein in a local yarn store, and most patterns on Ravelry are $5-10 each.

A few other things that are good to know: If you follow KnitCrate on Instagram or join their Ravelry group, they reveal spoilers at the end of each month (usually around the 20th) before the subscription renews on the first. If you are pickier about what fibers you like to use or want to avoid certain colors, these would be great to check out. (The August early preview can be found here). Otherwise, you won’t know what the theme, yarn, or patterns will be before they renew your subscription for the month.

On a side note – if you watched the Instagram Live reveal video this month, did you see my cameo? It was so much fun to meet Hannah from KnitCrate and help her reveal August’s yarns and colors!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you’ll receive the August box (while supplies last).

Value Breakdown: At $24.99, here’s approximately what you are paying for each item:

  • Knitologie Glowing Worsted Yarn – $13.18 ($6.59 per skein)
  • Pattern Booklet – $10.98
  • Elephant Stitch Marker – $0.82
