Bulu Box July 2019 Review
There isn’t a theme for Bulu Box and there is some personalization involved, so the contents are usually a surprise:
Because of the variations with this subscription, there’s not a traditional information card listing the items.
There are also usually some coupons and/or product literature with this subscription. They don’t always relate to the items in the box, although sometimes they do.
Mason Natural Collagen Beauty Cream (0.1 fl oz) - Buy 3, 2 oz Jars for $15.75 (found here for $14.26)
You’ll occasionally receive a beauty product in Bulu Box. It’ll typically be skincare-related (or maybe something to do with hair growth, nail condition, etc.) and won’t be a color cosmetic, so it should be able to be used by anyone. This is a moisturizer that includes collagen. Collagen, even hydrolyzed (as this is) is probably too large of a molecule to penetrate the skin, but it would hold on to water near the surface of the skin, which is moisturizing and may help to temporarily diminish the appearance of fine lines. I think this is not quite right for me as there are also some silicones so it felt a little greasy on my skin, but your mileage may vary (for comparison, Vichy skincare also typically has silicones and I can’t use it, but it has a lot of fans). Collagen that is ingested has more of a proven benefit in terms of hair, skin, and nail condition, but this is a topical product.

Cover Three Nutritional Brain Defense (1 serving) – Buy a 6 Pack for $39.99
We have received this product in a past Bulu Box, but it has been awhile. I notice the packaging has changed (take a look at the Amazon page) and I suspect it’s because of the reference to CTE on this sample. This has fish oil, curcumin (good against inflammation), and a few other compounds, but you are not going to treat CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy, caused by repeated head injuries such as can be experienced by NFL players) by downing some fish oil. This may work for you if you would like to take fish oil but can’t swallow large capsules (fish oil supplements are huge). However, a 6-pack is $40 so it would be kind of an expensive method for the long term.
McLaren Medical Vitamin D3 (20 mcg, 90 tablets) – Retail Value $7.50
This is the first time I’ve heard of this brand and the first time I’ve received this particular sample. I rather like that the packaging is plain – they are not trying to draw you in with flashy graphics (which are frequently a cover for lack of substance). The package says what it is. If a doctor has recommended that you take vitamin D3 because you have low D3 levels, this seems like it would be as good as anything else (and it is inexpensive). Please note this contains pharmaceutical glaze so it is not vegan.
Green Med Partyrite Hangover Support (2 capsules) – Retail Value $2.50
You’ll receive probably 5+ hangover remedies from Bulu Box per year. No kidding. I don’t drink so I don’t have much in the way of a personal assessment to share. I do think for people who drink and want to try such products, receiving 2 pills as a sample is not bad. It’s enough to see if it works without spending the money on a full-sized bottle (which you can’t always assess for some of the other supplements they provide in this subscription). These are vegetarian and one of the active ingredients is the extract of the Japanese raisin tree, which seems to be common in these types of products. I note this one does not contain milk thistle (as far as I can tell) so you can take it even if you are allergic to ragweed. (Milk thistle is in a lot of liver supplements and people allergic to ragweed should not take it.)
Osmo Active Hydration in Lemon Lime (1 serving) – Buy 40 Servings for $20
This has sucrose, glucose, and electrolytes and is similar to Gatorade in how you would use it (i.e., to rehydrate after a lot of sweating whether that’s from an outdoor job or exercise). I found that it mixed reasonably well and it tasted OK (lemon lime is not my favorite flavor) but I also probably wouldn’t buy this on a regular basis. I just don’t lose enough fluids during exercise to justify drinking added electrolytes (but, that could be different for everyone – I only exercise inside and you’d certainly sweat more jogging outdoors in summer, or hiking).
Prospera Supplements Recovery (6 capsules) – Buy 60 Capsules for $31.95
I have received this sample several times from Bulu Box now. This has several different active ingredients that promote sleep in different ways. One is magnesium, which can promote calmness (and lower blood pressure). It also has tart cherry extract, which is anti-inflammatory (recovery is about sleep but not ONLY about sleep). And, unfortunately, it has melatonin, which means I can’t take it. A small percentage of people who take melatonin have vivid, unsettling dreams, and I happen to be one of them. (The dreams are such that any sleep you get is not restful at all.) But by all means, try it out if you are not one of those people. These do also have gelatin in the capsules.
SWAT Fuel 9mm + P Endurance Formula (2 capsules) – Buy 60 Capsules for $54.95 (found here for $39.95)
This is meant to be a preworkout supplement, fat burner, and energy and endurance supplement all in one. The manufacturer makes a lot of claims that could probably get them in trouble with the FDA (like using this for weight management, appetite control, energy, stamina, fitness, training, as a nonprescription alternative to Adderall, etc.). As with most energy-type supplements, this has rather a lot of caffeine as well as some B vitamins, choline, and chromium. If you are sensitive to aspirin, don’t take it, as it includes willow bark (a source of salicylic acid). This has a caffeine equivalent to 2.5 cups of coffee so if this is something you’re interested in, I’d suggest trying out your sample while sitting on the couch doing nothing to make sure it doesn’t increase your blood pressure or heart rate too much. Don’t also use energy drinks while using this and limit your intake of caffeine from other sources as well.
This item also appeared in the weight loss version of Bulu Box this month.
Verdict: This month’s box had 7 samples, so they’d average about $1.43 each. I’d say this was a pretty typical month for Bulu Box, with the kinds of samples I’ve come to expect. There were a few repeat samples from past months (this can happen, which is why I’d suggest only subscribing to one or the other version of Bulu Box and not both – with both, there are even more repeats). I don’t get much sun so probably the most useful sample to me was the vitamin D3 supplement, which is, coincidentally, worth ¾ of the subscription price on its own.
I’d strongly recommend using a coupon code when you subscribe and choosing either the regular or the weight loss box, but not both, since there is a lot of product repetition between the two.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, August would be your first shipment. Also keep in mind that there are variations in the boxes, so your box might not be exactly like mine in any given month.
Value Breakdown: This box had 7 items, for an average value of about $1.43 each.
