Birchbox Grooming Men's Sample Box June 2019 Review

I'm having my husband, John, give me his rundown of this box since he is the grooming expert in our house. Here's just a quick snapshot of what his skin and hair are like, you can get a better idea of how the products work for him:

  • Skin - Smooth, clear, and in great shape, considering he does nothing to keep it that way. John took Accutane for acne as a teen, so he doesn't experience active breakouts anymore (but he does have some scarring). I'm currently trying to show him how important it is to work on preventing aging before it starts!
  • Hair - Coarse and wavy.

This month, a little pep talk card is included.

This card details the theme of the month and the items included in John's box. Plus, it offers some tips on how to use the products. Now, onto the items!

House 99 by David Beckham Greater Look Moisturizer, 5ml - Estimated Value $1.67 (Buy a full-size 75ml version for $25 here)

I'm pretty sure John's tried this before and didn't like it. First, the tiny tube is only half full. Second, John uses mostly fragrance-free products, so the heavy cologne scent bothers him. In terms of how it feels on his skin, it's lightweight and leaves a soft, smooth texture (almost like a primer).

Jack Black Pure Clean Daily Facial Cleanser, 0.5oz - Estimated Value $1.58 (Buy a 6oz full-size version for $19 here)

This 2-in-1 toning cleanser leaves John's skin feeling squeaky clean. There isn't much of a scent and it doesn't foam which makes it less drying than some men's cleansers. I think the flip cap packaging is great, especially for a sample size! John says he feels like his skin feels a little tight after cleansing with this so he likes to follow up with a moisturizer.

Maapilim Face Cleanser, 0.5oz - Estimated Value $2.65 (Buy a 3.4oz full-size version for $18 here)

This is the second of two cleansers John received this month. This starts as a thin gel but turns into more of a cream cleaner as you work it onto your skin. It has a stronger scent than the Jack Black cleanser but it smells nice. John says it leaves his skin slightly less tight than the Jack Black but that he still feels like he needs some hydration after.

Marvis Whitening Toothpaste, 10ml - Estimated Value $1.80 (Buy a 75ml full-size version for $13.50 here)

John and I have both been enjoying this toothpaste. It's minty enough to not only taste the mint but to feel the tingle as well. I can't speak to the whitening effects over time, but it does leave my teeth feeling fresh-from-the-dentist clean and doesn't leave a coating in my mouth like typical toothpaste. I can definitely see us buying a full size and trying some of the other interesting minty flavors.

Ursa Major Hoppin’ Fresh Deodorant, 1.65oz - Estimated Value $11.42 (Buy a 2.6oz full-size version for $18 here)

Speaking of tingle, I'm used to a minty mouth but not minty pits. 🙂 John works 12-hour shifts in a high-stress environment and is loyal to his go-to deo/antiperspirant stick, but I've been on the hunt for a natural deodorant (not antiperspirant) that works. I gave it a go and found some benefits – no skin irritation, a subtle eucalyptus smell, and no white marks – and some disadvantages – feels a bit greasy and doesn't keep the freshness for long.

Verdict: This month, John enjoyed most of his Birchbox Grooming picks! He really likes the toothpaste and thinks the deodorant works well for him (although it didn't for me). I estimate a value of $19.12 for this box. That's almost double the cost of the box. With the steady stream of grooming samples coming in over the past few months, John's found several favorite products. It's convenient that he can purchase full-size versions from the Birchbox shop.

I have yet to find a “natural” deodorant that keeps the stink away. I actually use an Old Spice one that I love. Smells kinda vanilla/citrus and works great for Texas hot summers.
