Cocotique “Self-Care Essentials” March 2019 Review
We all know the importance of self-care – one of my favorite box themes! This month’s Cocotique “Self-Care Essentials” box has products that will get you ready for your big spring reveal. It includes pampering products like a body sponge, body cream, foot gel, hair products, and an inspirational card.
The back of the Cocotique info card describes all the products included in this month’s box, provides information on where to purchase the products online and offer exclusive discount codes. I really appreciate when boxes make the extra effort to provide this information.
Unique to this month’s box is an inspirational message card. It reads “The secret of success is that we never never give up.” I like it and it’s a nice touch to this month’s self-care themed box.
Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Natural Shea Butter & Pure Coconut Oil Sulfate-Free Cleansing Shampoo, 16.5 oz – Retail Value $4.99
Suave recently released a new line of products for natural hair. This sulfate-free moisturizing shampoo claims to gently cleanse hair, remove buildup, make hair easier to detangle, reduce breakage, tame frizz and enhance shine. This shampoo does not contain parabens or dyes and is color safe.
African Americans spend billions of dollars on hair care products and accessories. Many of the major beauty care companies have tapped into this market so I'm not surprised to see that Suave launched this natural hair care line.
Daily Concepts Multi-Functional Soap Sponge Charcoal, 1.60 oz – Retail Value $8.00
This multi-functional sponge is infused with detoxifying charcoal soap to detoxify, exfoliate and deep cleanse skin. To use, wet, lather and cleanse skin in a circular motion.
I used this soap sponge and it's very rough! It should be marketed as an exfoliator which is how I intend to use it going forward. It smells great and washes away clean but this little bar is expensive. In one shower, I used at least 25% of the soap in the sponge. If used daily, which I would not recommend, it wouldn't last a week.
Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Natural Shea Butter & Pure Coconut Oil Moisturizing Curl Conditioner, 16.5 oz – Retail Value $4.99
This moisturizing curl conditioner, from the newly released nature hair care line by Suave, claims to leave hair deeply moisturized, frizz-free and shiny. The slippery texture makes it easy to finger detangle and prep natural hair for styling.
I’ve used Suave products in the past and didn't have a great experience. The quality of the products was questionable and it left my hair feeling stripped and brittle. I hope that this new line, designed specifically for natural hair, will have better results.
Kamedis Hydrating Foot Gel, 3.4 oz – Retail Value $10.99
Nourish cracked feet and heels with this foot gel that provides relief to irritated skin, locks in moisture and restores the skin barrier. This foot gel is suitable for those with eczema and diabetes.
At bedtime, I applied a generous amount of the foot gel and covered my feet with socks. It didn't feel like the gel really absorbed into my skin. My feet looked shiny and the gel feels super silky but it just sat on top of my skin. I didn't notice any difference in the morning. I also think it’s odd that the product is meant to be stored in a cool and shaded area below 30 degrees. So, in the fridge?
Suave Professionals for Natural Hair Define & Shine Serum Gel, 4.75 oz – Retail Value $4.99
The new Suave natural hair line features this define and shine gel serum that holds curls, locks in moisture and enhances shine. It's meant to be applied to damp hair to enhance and hold curls while the hair dries.
I love a good curl enhancing jelly so, this product was the most tempting to try! However, it’s not enticing enough to disturb my fresh blowout. Moreover, Suave isn't a brand I trust and I'm having difficulty finding reviews of this new line that are not associated with a promotion. I do hope that other Cocotique Cuties have a great experience with these products.
Vitabath Heavenly Coconut Crème Body Cream with Coconut Extract, 2-1oz – Total Estimated Value $1.98 (Buy full-size for $7.95)
Containing shea and cocoa butter, coconut oil, antioxidant-rich superfruits, and skin conditioning vitamins, the body cream is clinically proven to improve skin moisture by 82%.
I applied this ultra-rich moisturizer after the shower. It absorbs very quickly so I ended up using a lot of the body cream. The smell is odd. Out of the container, it smells great but when initially applied to my skin, I didn't like the smell at all. But, during the day, I would smell a hint of coconut and that scent was pleasant. The jury is still out on this lotion.
The Verdict: When the theme for this month’s Cocotique box was announced, I was so excited! I love all things self-care. I pictured bath bombs, body butter, scented candles, and aromatherapy oils. I was not expecting more hair products!
The last three months have been overrun with hair care. Many of us wear our hair in locs and braids in other protective styles. I get a blowout every 2 – 3 weeks in the salon and would honestly prefer to have my stylist manage my hair. It's not every day that I'm looking to try a new hair product or switch out hair products so frequently that I haven't had a chance to really determine if the product is working well.
The liked the other products in this month's box. The soap, lotion, and foot gel were all OK but nothing spectacular. Of the three, the soap was my favorite. I love a good exfoliator and have had good experiences lately with beauty products containing charcoal.
Cocotique costs $25 with free shipping. I estimate the retail value to be $35.94 which is a decent value and higher than last month’s box but contains one less product. All but one of the products in this month’s box was full-sized and I appreciate that.
