The Bookish Box “Twisted Fairytales” Review – January 2019
The Bookish Box is a book-inspired subscription box from Appraising Pages, which is now called The Bookish Shop.
Originally, The Bookish Box was a subscription box filled with bookish objects only—no actual books involved. Recently, though, they changed up their game and added several subscription varieties to choose from, including one that does have a book inside!
My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).
This review is of the Bookish Goodies & YA Book Box, which is $28.99 a month + shipping.

As the last child in a family of daughters, seventeen-year-old Janneke was raised to be the male heir. While her sisters were becoming wives and mothers, she was taught to hunt, track, and fight. On the day her village was burned to the ground, Janneke―as the only survivor―was taken captive by the malicious Lydian and eventually sent to work for his nephew Soren.
Janneke’s survival in the court of merciless monsters has come at the cost of her connection to the human world. And when the Goblin King’s death ignites an ancient hunt for the next king, Soren senses an opportunity for her to finally fully accept the ways of the brutal Permafrost. But every action he takes to bring her deeper into his world only shows him that a little humanity isn’t bad―especially when it comes to those you care about.
Through every battle they survive, Janneke’s loyalty to Soren deepens. After dangerous truths are revealed, Janneke must choose between holding on or letting go of her last connections to a world she no longer belongs to. She must make the right choice to save the only thing keeping both worlds from crumbling.
This book is shaping out to be a great read! Of the recent The Bookish Box YA selections, this is by far my favorite. I’m immediately captivated by Janneke’s plot, the backstory of her encounters with evil Lydian and her current relationship with her new master Loren. Goblins killed Janneke’s family, enslaved her and now she’s been under the rulership of Loren for the past 100 years. As a human in Permafrost ruled by goblins, Janneke has leveraged the skills taught by her father to survive. She’s built a relationship Loren who trusts her. He wants to turn her into a goblin and take her on the hunt to determine the new goblin king. But, does she trust him? Can you really be friends with someone who has held you captive? What does it mean for her to trade in her humanity and become a goblin? I can’t wait to find out!
Belle Sticker designed by Diana Dworak – Listed Retail Value $4.00
Special Edition Horoscope Bookmark (1/12) by Gabriella Bujdoso – Listed Retail Value $7.00
Each month going forward, a sticker that matches the month’s theme and cover art of the booklet will be included in the box. This month’s fairytale-inspired sticker on Belle features artwork by Diana Dworak. The Aquarius bookmark designed by Gabriella Bujdoso is inspired by Lira from To Kill a Kingdom by Alexandra Christo. It is the first bookmark in a series of twelve.
Sleeping Beauty Shower Steamer by Lizush Soap – Listed Retail Value $4.00
Lavender aids in relaxation and can increase sleep quality. This Sleeping Beauty shower steamer is all natural, vegan and non-GMO. It was an unexpected addition to this month’s box. I enjoyed using this shower steamer. It’s large and smells great. The scent carried throughout my entire bathroom and bedroom.
Lunar Chronicles Inspired Adjustable Ring by The Bookish Shop – Listed Retail Value $10.00
This dainty gold Lunar Chronicles inspired ring features a half moon and star gem. It’s super cute but really small and understated. It would look great stacked with other rings.
Beauty and the Best Inspired Book Sleeve designed by KDP Letters – Listed Retail Value $25.00
Inspired by a tale as old as time, this Beauty and the Beast book sleeve will help keep your books safe and secure. I have a tenancy to toss my planner in my purse and as a result, I’ve scratched the cover and crumpled a few pages. This cute and sturdy book sleeve came right on time!
Lunar Chronicles Inspired Bookish Box Collectible Pin (6/12) by Dust and Pages – Listed Retail Value $10.00
This pin is inspired by Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer, a young adult series of fairytale novels. Each book features a new take on an old fairytale. This “Oh My Stars!” pin designed by Dust and Pages is well designed, sturdy and a Bookish Box collectible.
The Verdict: I’m loving this month’s book and I recommend it if you’re looking for a good read. This book does have sensitive subjects. Be sure to read the authors forward and make sure there aren’t any topics that would trigger you or you wouldn’t want your young adult to read about. I also really liked the goodies included in this month’s box – especially the shower steamer and ring. As always, I love how Bookish Box sets a theme and carries it throughout the books and book-related items. All incorporated fairytales in one way or the other. And, finally, I’m consistently impressed with the diversity of partnerships featured in this box. They do an excellent job highlighting artist.
This Bookish Box costs $36.49 ($28.99 + $7.50 shipping to GA) and has a listed retail value of $78.99. Although I think the listed values are a little high, the total is still more than double the price of the box itself making it a good value for a newly released book and unique book inspired goodies.
