Play! by Sephora is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription. Each month they send you six samples, a PLAY! BOOK of tips and tricks, and a PLAY! PASS for in-store learning.

I used to work at Sephora so I naturally couldn’t resist this subscription!

FYI - The box variation I received this month is box ending in #682. To find out which box you’re receiving at the beginning of each month, follow these instructions:

If you log in through a browser, not the app, and go to my account > account details > online orders and open the play! Order Details, you can see the “item number” next to the image.

Play! by Sephora #682 Review

Sephora play January 2019 theme

Each box comes with a foldable info sheet. The front always has a design related to the theme. This month they have a "Play! List" that shows a bunch of stats about their subscription this year. I love reading stuff like this!

Sephora play January 2019 play pass

Each box comes with a Play! Pass, which is a card you can use at Sephora (in-store AND newly online as well! Woo!) to get 50 extra rewards points, and you can also get one-on-one tutorials and tips of products from a Sephora consultant.

Sephora play January 2019 item list

The opposite side of the info sheet has pictures of each item and details about what they are, how to use them, and why Sephora thinks you’ll love them.

Sephora Play November 2018 bag

Every month they include all of the samples in a mini bag with a different design. This month's bag is 100% recyclable and zips shut, which I like more than the typical drawstring bags. They've had these recyclable bags for a couple months now. They seem to be the new normal, which I'm happy about!

Sephora play January 2019 caudelie cream

Caudalie Vinoperfect Radiance Serum, .33 fl oz - Estimated Value $26.07 (Buy a 1 oz full-size for $79)

This is a great serum. It has grapevine sap which is supposed to be 62 times more effective at brightening skin than Vitamin C, and it also has squalane which is one of my favorite ingredients for hydration. It just sinks right into my skin and absorbs while leaving my skin soft and healthy-feeling.

Sephora play January 2019 kat von d perfume

Kat Von D Saint Eau de Parfum Sample, 1.5 ml - Estimated Value $2.25 (Buy a 1 oz for $45)

Kat Von D Sinner Eau de Parfum Sample, 1.5 ml - Estimated Value $2.25 (Buy a 1 oz for $45)

FYI - these are the Bonus Item for my box.

Kat Von D released these fragrances at the same time as a dichotomy of scents, for you to pick one or the other or to collect the duo together. The Saints fragrance is a classic floral fragrance, and the Sinner fragrance is more warm & spicy.

Sephora play January 2019 wander eye mask

Sephora play January 2019 wander eye mask back

Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Gold Eye Masks, 1 set - Estimated Value $4.17 (Buy 6 mask sets for $25)

I've seen these gold foil eye masks in a few subscription boxes but have never received them myself until now. These apply fine and stay well - no awkward slipping down my face or anything. They felt nice and hydrating for a little while after but I didn't notice any lasting effects for the day.

Sephora play January 2019 clinique moisturizer

Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator, .24 fl oz - Estimated Value $4.56 (Buy a 1 oz for $30)

I really like Clinique's yellow moisturizer, the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, but I don't care for this Moisture Surge hydrator. I think it's really a matter of my personal skin type, which is dry. This is a gel-like cream, which absorbs quickly but I really don't feel very hydrated from it. My skin just drinks it up.

Sephora play January 2019 bite beauty lipstick

Bite Beauty Amuse Bouche Lipstick in Sake, .05 fl oz - Estimated Value $8.67 (Buy .15 oz for $26)

Bite Beauty is a brand I really like. They make great products and have clean ingredients, as well. These lipsticks are very pigmented, they smell nice, and they feel creamy and moisturizing. This color, Sake, is a "dusty mauve," and it's beautiful. You can see it swatched and modeled below.

Sephora play January 2019 cllinique eyeliner

Clinique Quickliner for Eyes Intense Black, .005 oz - Estimated Value $7.50 (Buy a .12 oz for $18)

This eyeliner is a great new discovery for me! I knew Clinique had eyeliners but I hadn't had the chance to try them before. This black, automatic liner has a great level of pigmentation and went on very smoothly without pulling my eye. I could get a nice, precise line too. The staying power is nice, too - it didn't smudge or budge all day.

Sephora play January 2019 swatches

Here are swatches of the lipstick and the eyeliner.

Here, I'm wearing the eyeliner and the lipstick. Both are great to wear every day!

Verdict: This month's Play! by Sephora box has an estimated value of $55.47, which is a fantastic value from a $10 box. I'm happy with this month, especially with the Caudalie moisturizer and the Clinique eyeliner. I enjoy my Sephora Play! boxes because they will always feature high-end brands. I love trying new things or getting extras of things I already love!

@Haley Faye, you can use the Clinique moisture surge as a serum, and then apply the dramatically different on top for more hydration – that will work well.

For what it’s worth, the moisture surge has a lot more beneficial ingredients than the yellow lotion.

Thanks so much for the insight, JuJu! Great tip. 🙂

Does any one else’s “Sake” color look purple? Mine looks nothing like these pictures; swatch, on the stick, or worn.

Hailey

I was just about to leave a comment about this. Mine is a weird purple/gray color. I want THIS one. I want the one in the picture in the pullout. That color would look great on me. This weird purple version of Sake is not okay.

Your lashes are amazing! Please say what lash serum/treatment you found on Amazon you are using that you mentioned in a previous comment.

Love your reviews!

Thanks, Anne! I’ve had good results from using it about two months ish now. On Amazon, its listing is titled “Essy Eyelash Growth Serum for Lash and Brow Irritation Free Formula”

Definitely box twins. I love that your box matches mine (as does our coloring) so its great to see the products on you. I was hesitant about the dark lipstick, needn’t be.
I usually pitch/give away the eye liners, but I might try this one. I don’t have a terrifically steady hand, and they are dark.

It’s not a liquid, so short strokes work. It’s also a good product.

I’ve gotten several of these and the samples are usually good for 2-3 uses before they stop working.

You are gorgeous, Haley! And that lipstick looks great on you. I have the same complexion as you, and it looks dark in the swatch, but I’m tempted to get it now!

Thank you, Heather!

I ended up getting box “F” (per MSA’s post on box spoilers). This was my first Play! box in a while, and I was quite happy with it. I got the same lipstick, eye masks, and Clinique moisturizer. I also got a Gucci perfume which smelled great, and a 2nd moisturizer from Caudalie, which I didn’t mind getting at all since I’ll take all of the skincare they want to send to me! I also got the cutest mini bottle of Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation, which I gifted, but I still couldn’t help appreciate because it was so darn cute!

This was a pretty good box. It *almost* makes me want to resub.
