I'm reviewing One Day in December:

One Day in December by Josie Silver

Book Summary from Amazon:

Laurie is pretty sure love at first sight doesn't exist anywhere but the movies. But then, through a misted-up bus window one snowy December day, she sees a man who she knows instantly is the one. Their eyes meet, there's a moment of pure magic...and then her bus drives away.

Certain they're fated to find each other again, Laurie spends a year scanning every bus stop and cafe in London for him. But she doesn't find him, not when it matters anyway. Instead they "reunite" at a Christmas party, when her best friend Sarah giddily introduces her new boyfriend to Laurie. It's Jack, the man from the bus. It would be.

What follows for Laurie, Sarah and Jack is ten years of friendship, heartbreak, missed opportunities, roads not taken, and destinies reconsidered. One Day in December is a joyous, heartwarming and immensely moving love story to escape into and a reminder that fate takes inexplicable turns along the route to happiness.

This month I picked my book based on 4 things:

  1. The adorable cover
  2. This quick summary from BOTM: "The best British holiday meet cute since Love Actually."
  3. The 4+ star average review on Goodreads.
  4. It's a Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick

I purposely didn't read an in-depth review or summary because I wanted to be somewhat surprised, and if there's a book with Love Actually vibes in time for the holidays, I want it!

(Some vague spoilers below.)

Well, turns out this book wasn't a good fit for me. But at the same time, I couldn't put it down! The author did a great job of keeping me turning the pages even if I was mad about it! I'm not a fan of insta-love or any type of cheating, and this book had both, and I just wasn't rooting for the two main characters to get together. (I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who didn't like this book, though. It gets glowing reviews everywhere!)

And Book of the Month includes a bookmark every month, too!

If you picked this book this month, please let me know what you think of it!

Verdict:  The value of the Book of the Month subscription is great. The variety of new books offered is awesome and the prices are still better than Amazon for new hardcover releases. If one book a month won't cut it, you can also add-ons books from previous months for $9.99. I like that you also have the option to skip a month.

I had a book like that a few months ago. The two main characters made me so annoyed with their cheating, I never finished it. I keep all of my BOTM books (though I’ve swapped some for new ones) but I donated this one haha

I decided to pick this book up to try more contemporary romance and just didn’t like it. The main characters annoyed me too and I couldn’t root for them. I’m not interested in finished it.

I was the opposite, I didn’t think I would like this book at all since I usually read s I-fi and horror but I wound up loving it! Everyone has different tastes I guess 🙂

I love, love, loved this book. I didn’t get it from BOTM and was actually reading it when the December selections were announced. I kept it after I finished it, which I only do with favorites!

Also, Love Actually is my all time favorite movie. I don’t think I would have made the comparison. 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️
