A Little Touch of Magick November 2018 Review
I am still fairly new to reviewing this subscription and was excited to see what they had in store:
The box came with this information card listing the items and retail values. Since the items were unbranded, I used these values when writing the review.
Most of the time, the story comes in a little booklet like this. They vary quite a lot in length and theme. This one is a reimagining of “Little Red Riding Hood.”
Sometimes you’ll get a card with a spoiler for next month’s story.
“She is Fierce” Delicate Band Bracelet – Listed Value $28
I didn’t realize when I first photographed this, but it has the words “she is fierce” stamped into the bracelet (hopefully you can see it in the last photo). This fits me pretty well (and it has a closure so it won’t come off easily) although it *might* be a bit of a tight fit for people with larger wrists. Anyway, I like delicate jewelry and this would look great in a stack with some other bracelets in a similar finish.
Pumpkin Votive Fall Décor – Listed Value $12
This has one candle and then the pumpkins are some lightweight material. This is very closely tied to the story, actually. I can’t put this out at home because CATS but I have these bookshelves in my office that is mostly empty and this would be a nice seasonal way to fill up the space and add a little color.
Gift Boxed Wolf Mug – Listed Value $14
This is also pretty closely tied to the story. We drink a lot of hot beverages at my house (tea, mostly) so this will see a lot of use. I think it’s fun that we have so many one-off mugs that don’t match and this will be another to add to our collection.
Autumn Leaf Statement Necklace with Matching Earrings – Listed Value $40
These items are listed as a set and one price is given. The necklace is actually rather heavy and in addition to the leaves, there are some small crystals here and there. I think this looks best with a solid-colored (preferably warm-toned) top but my winter wardrobe is largely solids so I should be good. Most of the story takes place in a forest so this is quite appropriate, as well.
Red Hooded Poncho – Listed Value $40
This subscription involves a lot of wraps and ponchos and other items that should work for people with a variety of body sizes. This poncho has a hood, which I did not put up because I had to go to work after we took these pictures and it would not have been kind to my (very dry) hair. But it is there if you want it. Sorry if I’m squinty in the pictures but I was staring almost directly at the sun when we took these due to the time of day and the fact that if I’d stood anywhere else, you’d’ve seen landscapers with a bobcat hard at work in the backyard as a backdrop. This will be nice for fall shopping trips (those times when you want a coat or something but you don’t have time to take it off).
Cranberry Chutney Soap – Listed Value $6
There has to be at least one item in every box that makes the whole box smell really good. The last couple of boxes, it was incense, but this time it is this soap. (I’ve kept it wrapped to hopefully retain some of the scent since I have like three open bars of soap in the shower right now.) Anyway, this is a nice seasonal scent (that is not pumpkin spice) and the soap looks very nice in addition to its lovely scent.
Thanksgiving Card Set – Listed Value $14
You’ll get a lot of stationery items in this subscription. I think four cards is the most we’ve received at one time. These are all blank inside. I did receive this box before Thanksgiving, so the theme of the cards is timely. Now I never have to worry about buying cards since I can just go back through my stash from A Little Touch of Magick and find one that’s appropriate for nearly any occasion.
Verdict: I calculated a total value of $154 for the November 2018 A Little Touch of Magick. Granted, I did have to use all values from the information card, but that is almost triple the cost of the subscription plus shipping on a month-to-month basis. Even if you think one or two values from the card are a little high, you are still getting (easily) $100+ in merchandise. Everything is sized in a way that will work for different body types, too, with the possible exception of the bracelet that may not work for larger wrist sizes.
I also think there is something to be said for curation here. Opening this box isn’t just about the items (which were all lovely), but there is also an element of experience here, helped along by the story. I can tell that a great deal of thought has been put into it, from sourcing the items on down to the careful packaging. It was easy to see how the items fit the story this month, too, but there was also just a nice autumn theme running through everything, from the colors to the scents to the items, themselves.
To Wrap Up:
Can you still get this box if you sign up today? This was the November box. Your first box might be this one or it might be December’s. It sounds like they ship out throughout the month as orders come in, so if you are interested, definitely contact them ASAP.
