A Little Touch of Magick October 2018 Review
I am still fairly new to reviewing this subscription and was excited to see what they had in store:
The box came with this information card listing the items and retail values. Since the items were unbranded, I used these values when writing the review.
Most of the time, the story comes in a little booklet like this. They vary quite a lot in length and theme. This one was a little dark in tone (but also whimsical if that is possible?).
Halloween Card – Listed Value $4
You’ll usually receive a card or stationery item in this box. They’re always blank and tasteful, and they definitely relate to the theme of the box.
Bewitching Incense – Listed Value $5
This smells so good! The incense sticks are sealed in (opaque) plastic so I didn’t open them yet in order to keep them fresh, but the scent permeated the whole box anyway. In fact, some of the items from the box still have traces of the incense scent on them. (I’m holding off on burning incense until I’m sure Sneaky’s asthma has calmed down; Sneaky is my calico cat and you can see pictures of her in my cat reviews.)
Black Cat Keychain – Listed Value $18
I am all about cat stuff (which you would know if you read some of my other reviews). This is cute and the lobster-claw type of clip makes it very easy to attach to keys. This is already on my keychain with my house key.
Origami Bat Necklace – Listed Value $30
Subscribers could have received this in either silver or gold. I don’t have a preference between the two and will wear either, so gold works for me. This is a pretty short necklace on me (see me wearing it in a photo below) and suitable for wearing with some of my V-neck tops that a longer necklace would fall into.
Lace Mask – Listed Value $12
This is good for Halloween if you don’t want to get too dressed up. I think it makes my face look extra long for some reason. But it is a fun inclusion. In case it is not clear, this has a ribbon that ties behind your head so it will work for different head sizes and hairstyles.
Pumpkin Spice Brown Sugar Scrub – Listed Value $8
Scrubs are my favorite bath and body item to receive (you’ll usually get one bath and body item in this subscription). This has a good texture and basically the ideal (for me) concentration of scrubbing particles. Also it smells wonderful. I have received a lot of scrubs in subscription boxes this month and it makes me happy because now I don’t have to buy any.
Black Cat Wallet – Listed Value $28
I needed a new wallet! My previous wallet was also a cat wallet from a different subscription box, but it was getting worn out, so this came at exactly the right time. It has pretty much the same arrangement as my old wallet so it was very easy to transfer everything over. Also, the hot pink around the zipper matches my purse. So I am happy.
Knit Skull Scarf Wrap – Listed Value $45
If you receive a clothing item in this subscription, it will be a wrap or shawl or something similar, that will work for people of all different body sizes, which I think is thoughtful. It is kind of hard to tell when you’re wearing this that the pattern is skulls, so you could totally get away with it whenever you just want a black wrap. (Side note: the same day I took these pictures, my zebra-print tights got a hole in them so I am sad.)
Verdict: I calculated a total value of $150 for the October 2018 A Little Touch of Magick. Granted, I did have to use all values from the information card, but that is almost triple the cost of the subscription plus shipping on a month-to-month basis. Even if you think one or two values from the card are a little high, you are still getting (easily) $100+ in merchandise. Everything is sized in a way that will work for different body types, too.
I also think there is something to be said for curation here. Opening this box isn’t just about the items (which were all lovely), but there is also an element of experience here, helped along by the story. Although this is a relatively new subscription, I can tell that a great deal of thought has been put into it, from sourcing the items on down to the careful packaging.
