Lip Monthly September 2018 Review

This month's theme is “Flawless" and they included a note about how these colors will help us transition to fall.

Please Note: I was sent an incorrect informational card this month, as it listed a different variation of the bag. Customer service was quick to respond and provided a digital card!

Each month, Lip Monthly sends their products in a little makeup bag. I love that it is a smaller bag, just a bit bigger than my iPhone plus (which doesn't fit inside) and has a soft material on the outside with cute fall leaves and colors.

Before we get into the lip items, let me just say that Tiffany makes it look so easy and always looks beautiful showing off the colors on her lips. I ended up with a lot of funny faces (and many deleted photos that I hope will never resurface) trying to get good images of the lipstick on my lips so you could see them clearly. Hopefully, you're able to get a good idea of the colors from my images! Now that that's out of the way, let's see what we got:

Hikari Lip Crayon in Fireside - Retail Value $13

This crayon is much darker and has a bit more pink to it than it looks like on the Hikari site. I love the name fireside and it makes me think of more of a mulled wine color. It is a matte crayon but has the subtlest shine to it, and a little gloss over top (not pictured) really makes it pop. You can see that it goes on much brighter than it looks like in the tube. It wears down to a nice stain and I think this may be my go-to fall color.

Starlooks Lip Pencil in Untamed - Estimated Value $12

This lip liner looked so brown to me in the tube, but when I applied it to my lips, it was actually very close to my natural lip color. I think I could definitely wear this with a sheer gloss for a subtle, natural look. They also recommend that you use this to create an ombre look on your lips, which I think I might just try!

The one complaint I do have is that this seems to be a "perfect size" product which is only 70% of the full-size volume and Lip Monthly is supposed to be full-size products only. I'm also a little confused as to why they listed the value as $19 when the most expensive lip pencil on the Starlooks site is $16 (and looks nothing like this). A little research shows me that there was a "Sublime" lip liner that they were selling at one point for $19, but it was a plumping pencil and this is not, so maybe this is a case of having the wrong cost listed on the card based on other variations? Unfortunately, the Starlooks site doesn't have sizes listed so there is no way to confirm whether this is a full-size product or not.

Portland Bee Balm in Oregon Mint - Retail Value $2.99

I suffer from horribly chapped lips in the winter time, so I am always happy to see a lip balm. Especially one that is natural and made with organic ingredients that I am familiar with! This has just a hint of mint and the beeswax feels very moisturizing on my lips. I also love that this is handmade and helps in supporting bees and their keepers in Oregon!

Appeal Cosmetics Luxurious Lipstick in Spank Me! - Retail Value $29.01

This lipstick was not listed on the original card. I received this instead of the listed Steve Laurant lipgloss (which I might have preferred because there are some beautiful colors there!), but this is actually a higher value, so I can't complain. I'd consider this color a Barbie pink and I like the packaging of this lipstick although the tube did keep sliding back down while I was trying to photograph it. It has a bit of shine to it, but it quickly wore down to an almost chalky, matte finish. Not what I'd expect of a $29 lipstick, but a primer or gloss over top might help prevent this. I think it's still a fun color to have when you want a pop of pink, although I'm not sure I'm bold enough to tell everyone what the color is called.

This is the Hikari lip crayon layered over the Starlooks lip pencil. It gave it sort of a deeper wine-colored hue and I really liked the way they worked together! I added a bit of gloss over top and got a few hours out of this before it wore down to a light stain on my lips.

Just in case you're wondering about that awkward shoulder hanging out in the last photo, this is my behind the scenes look! And yes, I did test the lipstick out by kissing him on the forehead. Neither the crayon nor lipstick were baby-kiss-friendly, FYI!

Swatches from top to bottom, Starlooks lip liner, Appeal lipstick, and Hikari crayon.

Verdict: This was my first Lip Monthly delivery and I think that it was a pretty decent selection of items that I can actually use. It seems that the colors played it safe this month, which I appreciate as it makes them a bit more wearable for me since I don't make it out as much these days! I like the lip pencil, but if it is not truly a full-size product, then I think that is misleading for subscribers, which is never acceptable in my book. Overall, I was happy with the items I received as the $57 value is well over the $12.95 cost.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

I was upset that my last bag from them didn’t come in a makeup bag! I feel jipped.

I love the Hikari on you. The baby kiss test is a good idea also for what not to wear to a wedding. I remember one bride ending up with a kiss mark on her dress.
