BarkBox is a monthly subscription box for dogs. It’s one of our favorite subscription boxes – our dog loves it, and we’ve gifted it to dogs in our extended family as well!

BarkBox customizes your box to your dog’s size. For reference, this review is for the small size (our dog weighs 14 pounds). Check out Ragan's recent review of the super chewer box!

September 2018 Barkbox Review

BarkBox September 2018 - Box With All Products

The September BarkBox featured some of the cutest toys we've seen from BarkBox!

It includes an information card. These typically highlight a few items - some which you may or may not have received.

BarkBox September 2018 - Lets dig in

Enough card talk - let's dig in!

BarkBox September 2018 - Dog with A Pawful of Falafel 2

A Pawful of Falafel - Value $10

This first toy was the most adorable little falafel I've ever seen!

The crinkly pita holds two little falafel balls - one happy and one angry.

While pita is full of crinkle material, the two balls each have a squeaker inside. BarkBox has been crushing it as of late with their toy design, this is just the most recent example - Buckles LOVES it.

BarkBox September 2018 - Roly Cannoli 1

Roly Cannoli - Value $8

I never thought a falafel or a cannoli could be cute, but BarkBox really knows what they're doing - how cute is this Roly Cannoli toy?

It has a crinkly shell that is velcroed shut. Open it up to reveal the sad little ricotta. Basically, the entire little ricotta piece is a big tube squeaker, too!

These two toys are now his go-to toys in the office - I can even say which one her prefers because I find him with both all the time.

Fresh Fair Blueberry Cookie Treats - Value $8

The first of two treats was something on the sweet side - blueberry cookie bites - and let me tell you, I was jealous of Buckles for getting these - they actually smell really good!

These are made in the USA by BarkBox - and they're made with fresh blueberries and honey, it's no wonder they smelled delicious. Most importantly for our dog - they're wheat, corn, and soy free.

The second bag of treats is from the same BarkBox brand - this might be a newer line from them, but the 'Fresh Fair' line seems to be a favorite for our dog.

There's an important note on these treats. About a day or so after receiving them, we got this email from BarkBox:

Hi Eric,

Melissa here with my pup, Thor. I am reaching out to let you know that one of the treats Buckles received this month has mislabeled packaging. The Fresh Fair Chicken and Bacon Sandwich Treats are marked as grain free but contain grains (barley flour). As a pup parent myself, I know that some pups are sensitive to grains, so we wanted to inform you as soon as this was discovered.

Please know that we would never send any treats that we wouldn’t give to our own pups. The Chicken and Bacon Sandwich treats are still scrumptious for those who are able to eat grains - Thor approves!

The full ingredient list is below:

Chicken, Vegetable Glycerin, Pea Starch, Rye Flour, Barley Flour, Potato Starch, Tapioca Starch, Brewers Dried Yeast, Bacon, Cane Molasses, Salt, Natural Smoke Flavor, Yellow Pea Powder, Lactic Acid, Dried Cultured Skim Milk, Mixed Tocopherols (preservative)

Our deepest apologies again about this experience. Please reply to this email if Buckles cannot have grains, and we’ll be sure to mark that allergy preference for future boxes.

Kind woofs and belly scratches,
Melissa & Thor

I'm glad that they took the time to address it. Luckily for us, Buckles can have a small amount of grain before getting ear infections, so we were OK.

BarkBox September 2018 - Dog With BarkBox Fair Treats Chicken & Bacon Sandwich Recipe

This dog is going to like anything involving chicken or bacon - so the combination of the two is a real winner.

BarkBox September 2018 - Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew

BarkBox September 2018 - Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pig Ear Chew Opened

Half Pig Ear - Value $3

We don't allow our dog to chew on chews like this (his little stomach has never been able to hold it down). This will have to be passed on to a furry friend!

Verdict: This month was about as good of  a BarkBox as we could get. The toys alone were worth it for us - our dog is still going wild for them, and they're pretty darn cute, too. Combined with two bags of treats, and it feels like a win each month.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Customer care let us know that your first box will now always be either their Welcome Box or the current month’s box, followed by the normal schedule the following month.

My dog, Piper, received the fries. She is a power chewer, so that was destroyed almost immediately. (Piper was very pleased with her victory) We were mostly please with the treats, but I was disappointed to see a rawhide stick in her box. I expected a dog related company to know rawhide is not dog friendly.

Piper received some grain-free treats though, and is still working on one of the toys from August. The squeaker is long since defeated, but she hasn’t broken into the body yet. This was our second Barkbox and, overall, we’ve been happy with them.

I said the same thing about the blueberry treats. Smelled so good I wanted to eat one myself!

Buckles is so cute…and so are those toys! My dog is large so he got a double sided burrito (one happy and one surprised face) that he proceeded to destroy within a day. He hasn’t done that in awhile and Barkbox toys are generally very durable (any other brand honestly would have been done in an hour, not a day) so I was surprised. I can’t decide if he didn’t like the creepy faces or he just thought the burrito was delicious and he was supposed to eat it! LOL.

My small dog loves that burrito! She hasn’t managed to destroy it yet, but it is looking worse for wear with some bald spots and tears in the ‘wrapper’. I’m dog sitting a second dog and they both fight over it even though there is a house full of dog toys to choose from.

Honestly I have no plans on getting a dog so I live vicariously through your reviews of buckles
