Super Chewer Box is for dogs who are destructive. If you have read any of my dog subscription reviews, you will know that my Rottweiler, Nyx, is an expert at finding the weak points in toys and tearing them apart, so this seemed perfect for her. (For reference, Nyx weighs about 87 pounds right now.)

This review is of the Large Super Chewer, $39 a month, box.

Super Chewer July 2018 “” Review

BarkBox custom produces most of their treats and toys, so everything always nicely revolves around a theme:

The information card varies month-to-month in terms of style but I definitely appreciate the creativity that goes into it. This month, the safety information about toy types and supervising your dog was in the main information booklet. Nyx is still working on the whole “toys are not for eating” thing.

“Super Clucks” Treats

These are freeze dried chicken (no other ingredients). If your dog has issues with grains, soy, or food additives, these would be great to try! I don’t see freeze-dried meat in dog subscriptions too often but I think it’s actually a great idea for dogs (as opposed to cats, since my cats won’t touch it). All BarkBox branded treats are made in the USA and come in resealable bags.

“Drool” Treats

“Drool” Treats

These are pork-based and sort of a jerky style of treat (without being actual jerky, since they are a composite of several ingredients). These are wheat, corn, and soy free and again, made in the USA. (Barkbox doesn’t cater to specific allergy needs and while many of their treats will be grain free or free of wheat, corn, and soy, you will get a lot of common proteins like chicken, pork, beef, etc.)

Sawmill Creek Smokehouse Pork Hide Roll – Retail Value $4

Of the items in this subscription, the chews are the ones you’re most likely to be able to find again for reorder. This is a USA-made roll of 100% pork skin.  It’s supposed to be good for dental health. You’ll get two chews per month, typically, and you may occasionally see repeat items among the chews, but honestly, it’s not too often.

Butcher’s Block Bones 100% Natural Roasted Beef Steak

Butcher’s Block Bones 100% Natural Roasted Beef Steak

This is an item I’ve seen from this subscription before, but as I said, the chews are the items most likely to repeat, and since this brand is pretty much impossible to find for sale online, repeat items are the only way you’re easily getting more of these! You should keep this off the carpet as it may stain (once it comes into contact with dog saliva, of course). It’s a nice size for a large dog, which is good to see in a large dog box.

Toxic Critters Mouse Click Toy

Toxic Critters Mouse Click Toy

This is an interesting toy. It has a ball part attached to a rope, and the ball is further covered with a plush covering in the shape of a cartoonish mouse. I thought for sure Nyx would go straight for the rope but, as you can see, in fact, she chews on the plush end of this. I couldn’t believe it. She hasn’t yet extracted the ball from inside the plush cover, but that’s what this toy is designed for, so I’ll give it some time.

Toxic Critters Sledge Hog

This is rubber and is supposed to squeak, although I think that might require a lot of force because Nyx didn’t manage it last night. Hard rubber isn’t her favorite thing ever but she did give this at least a little time (the pictures were kind of boring because it was just sitting in her mouth, so I haven’t posted any with this review). You’ll usually get one plush/rope toy and one rubber toy with this subscription, although that can vary a little bit.

Here are some pictures of Nyx with the mouse toy. I couldn’t believe it, but she actually chewed on the non-rope end. I haven’t seen that in ages – usually, she goes straight for the rope. She hasn’t managed to damage this too badly yet so she’ll get to play with it again.

Verdict: I couldn’t calculate a value for this month’s Super Chewer Box since none of the main treats or toys were available in the BarkBox shop. But there are still some conclusions that can be drawn (these are basically the same as last month): (1) The contents of this box are pretty representative of what you would get if you were to sign up in a given month (two different types of toys, two treats, two chews); (2) Most items are custom-made for BarkBox; (3) The toys have, so far, been pretty durable. Also, the comic book theme was another fun one. Barkbox is doing great with the themes lately.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, your first box would be August's.

LIMITED TIME DEAL: Now through today 7/17, use this link to get an extra toy free in every box when you sign up for a 6-month OR 12-month BarkBox Super Chewer subscription. (To redeem your Extra Toy Club membership, simply select “Yes, Please” on the Pupgrade page).

Coupon - Use code SUBADDICTION to get a free extra month when you sign up for a 6 or 12-month subscription or use code ADDICTION for a $10 Barkshop credit on any new BarkBox Subscription. Barkshop credit code emailed 3-5 business days after purchase.

Value Breakdown: At $39 for the box, you are paying about $6.50 per item. Although some of the chew prices are below that, the toy prices are almost certainly well above that. (When I am able to calculate values, I usually get $50-55+ for this subscription.)

Just received my first Super Chewer box. The toys were WAYYY too big. I selected small size for my chihuahua mix and instead received the same size as I have seen for large dogs. So, kinda useless. Also, I signed up for the bonus toy with longer subs, so I should have received 3 instead of 2. End result, no usable toys in the first box. My Zack did like the treats and chews. Although the chews seemed a bit dry.
Their customer service was quick to tell me they are sending new toys. According to the customer service rep, they recently moved the warehouse cross county and there have been some logistical issues.
I hope they get it together. This was a bad start.

**update**
Canceled my subscription. Three months in and I did not receive 1 box that was for small dogs. Basically they have one box. The themes are cute. But what use is cute if every toy is too big for your pup to bite onto. Customer service was always upbeat and happy to resend a correct box. Except they never could. I waited an extra week to receive a “replacement” small dog box, after I received another large dog box. Received another large dog box. I do not believe they are curating the box based on size. They were helpful and easy to cancel. And they did refund all charges.

Nyx looks so sweet & happy with the toy!

Can’t understand why anyone would pay $40 for this. Looks like $10 worth of stuff. Go down to petsmart and buy two clearance toys and a couple treats and save yourself $30. Seems WAY overpriced.

I was thinking the exact same thing!!!!

my dog destroys petsmart clearance toys in five minutes and also, I’ve been in pet food factories. I would never feed my dog most of the brands that are in petsmart anymore.

These are high strength, extra durable toys for “super chewers.” I know from years of personal experience those toys are not cheap….and often are not found in clearance bins. Now I have bought super cheap toys on sale knowing that it will be 5 to 10 minutes of fun for my dog before being absolutely destroyed, but these are meant to last longer and are therefore more expensive.

Also, premium treats for dogs are usually at least $8 or $9 per bag, if not more.
