Whiskerbox August 2018 "Mystery Box" Review

Whiskerbox August 2018 Booklet Front Whiskerbox August 2018 Booklet Back

One thing that’s great about Whiskerbox is the items are usually off the beaten path when it comes to cat subscriptions – you don’t see these anywhere else! Let’s see what was in store this month:

Whiskerbox August 2018 Envelope

The box came inside this envelope, which is a first, but there were some large items that didn’t fit in the usual box.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Outfit

Cat Apparel

I don’t really have a good basis for calculating or estimating a price on these. Costumes from this subscription are typically given values of around $45 on the information card when there is a standard one. I do rather like this costume. I can’t put it on a girl kitty without great risk of bodily injury, so you will see photos of three of my boys wearing it below. This one didn’t have buttons or snaps so it was actually easier to get the cats into (slips down over the head).

Whiskerbox August 2018 Petstages

Petstages Moving Tail Mouse – Listed Value $29.99 (found on sale here for $11.99)

This requires two AAA batteries, which were not included, but we had some so I went ahead and set this up. At somewhat long intervals (I didn’t time them, but they seemed long), this starts making a noise and swinging the tail around. Most of the cats were interested in the tail (some even when it was not moving). This had a big suction cup so you could attach this to a surface.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Wands

Patchwork Pet PatchCat Natural Wand Mice (16”)

I could only find this on the manufacturer’s site, which appears to be wholesale only, and which doesn’t display prices. But, these are well made. They have nice, long wands (wand length for a cat toy like this is actually important) and several of my cats seemed interested in the mice on the ends (especially the tails).

Whiskerbox August 2018 Tape 1 Whiskerbox August 2018 Tape 2

Thin-Flex Cohesive Tape in Beige, 2-inches – Buy a Case of 24 Rolls for $34.95

My first reaction is: “What is this?  I don’t even…” I really have no idea why this item was in this box, or what it has to do with cats. I suppose you could use it to bandage a cat, or perhaps to bandage yourself after the cat injures you from putting the costume on.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Angus 1 Whiskerbox August 2018 Angus 2 Whiskerbox August 2018 Angus 3 Whiskerbox August 2018 Angus 4 Whiskerbox August 2018 Angus 5

Angus enjoyed the toys from the safety of the box he has taken up residence in. He is probably going to have to go back into our home office so we can catch him to medicate him because his eosinophilic plaque (on his chest/neck) isn’t getting better. But no worries, I have a plan of action from the vet and we will take care of it.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Madison 1 Whiskerbox August 2018 Madison 2

I always thought Madison would look dashing in pink ruffles. Turns out, he just looks desperate. To get out of the costume.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Madison 3 Whiskerbox August 2018 Madison 4

Oh, but that last picture is pretty cute. (These pictures were all taken in the bathroom. He was trying to hide under the bed.  Can’t imagine why…)

Whiskerbox August 2018 Sneaky 1 Whiskerbox August 2018 Sneaky 2

This day, I had a great talent for snapping pictures just *after* the main action. But Sneaky was in the mood to swat at these toys.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Sneaky Monkey

Sneaky is like, what is that thing you’re wearing?

Whiskerbox August 2018 Monkey 1 Whiskerbox August 2018 Monkey 2

I don’t usually think Monkey looks murderous, but, well, there might be a case for that here.

Whiskerbox August 2018 Sparkles 1 Whiskerbox August 2018 Sparkles 2

Poor guy has no idea what is going on, but he is stylish.

Verdict: I could not calculate a value for the August 2018 Whiskerbox. Most of the items were not available for retail purchase on the web, and there was no information card. I will say, other than the weirdness with the athletic tape, the contents of the box this month were representative of what you’d get each month – one piece of apparel, a few toys (but premium toys, such as the ones I received), maybe (but not always) a treat.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Whiskerbox ships on the 15th of the month so if you sign up before then (assuming they haven’t sold out), you would get September's box as your first box.

Zyrtec allergy medication has proven helpful in eosinophilic cats in clinical trials. Ask your vet.

Hm, that is an interesting idea. Angus is growing fur back right now in that area (to be fair, we are using a topical steroid at the moment) but switching his food is super slow due to GI tract issues and Zyrtec would be way better than prednisolone (which, of course, leads to Mr. Kitty’s various problems, which is why I want to keep Angus off of it).

FYI everyone, Mr. Kitty is a bit under the weather and won’t be appearing in any more cat subscription reviews for a week or two. He has recently been diagnosed with diabetes and he also has an upper respiratory infection right now, as well as an unrelated ear infection. I have learned to give insulin shots! And he is on various medications for the other issues.

Ragan, So sorry to hear Mr Kitty has diabetes!! My beloved Chloe had diabetes, but with two daily shots she lived a long and otherwise healthy life. Hopefully you can get his blood glucose under control quickly. Good luck, Mr. K!

After seeing that look on Monkeys face when wearing that dress, I’d be sure your bedroom door is locked tight at night with him on the outside, at least for a while!

So sorry to hear that. One of my cats had diabetes too. Jasper had to have a shot twice a day, but he was such a trooper! He had several other health problems too but stayed so sweet, loving and outgoing throughout. Hope Mr. Kitty feels better soon.

Ragan, I enjoy your cat box reviews so much, especially this one that comes with costumes. I’ve had a total of seven cats in my lifetime (curently two—Max who is a little over a year but quite large and Pookie my petite little 17 year old), all with different personalities and levels of patience (Max has lots and Pookie has almost none). But NONE of my cats would ever tolerate even a little hat, let alone a full body costume! So thanks so much for the info on cat stuff that I find super helpful, and for the pics I really enjoy!
