Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag.

This is one of Liz’s top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box - the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out our list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2017 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Ipsy August 2018 "Selfie with No Filter" Review

My bag this month features skincare, nail color, and makeup. Let’s see what I got!

The theme for this month is “Selfie with No Filter”. The included info card gives some summer beauty tips and info on products available in the Ipsy Shopper.

Each month, Ipsy subscribers get a makeup bag in addition to their 5 items.

This month, subscribers will receive this orange and yellow canvas bag. It’s lined with nylon and has a cute tassel on the zipper.

BILLION DOLLAR BROWS Mini Universal Brow Pencil, .27g

BILLION DOLLAR BROWS Mini Universal Brow Pencil, .27g - Retail Value $10

I’m really surprised this “universal” brow pencil matched my eyebrows so well. Typically, anything “universal” is too warm toned and looks silly. The downside is that the formula is a bit creamy, so it smears easily when I brush through my brows with a spoolie.

INMO The Universe’s Star Highlighter in Twilight, 1.5g

INMO The Universe’s Star Highlighter in Twilight, 1.5g - Retail Value $10

This peachy highlighter is super fluffy and powdery in the jar but applies and blends into the skin well. The glow it gives is subtle and looks great on cheekbones or swiped across the lid. I mostly stick with cool tone highlighters but I’m glad to have this warmer, golden option now.

ADESSE NEW YORK Gel Effect Nail Polish in New York Pink, 11ml -

ADESSE NEW YORK Gel Effect Nail Polish in New York Pink, 11ml - Retail Value $18

I received this cruelty-free, vegan, 12-free polish in a dusty-rose shade. The finish is super shiny even without a topcoat and has great lasting power layered on top of my clear dip powder covered nails. I also love that there is an expiration date on the bottle. I’m guilty of keeping my polishes around for way...too...long.

BENEFIT COSMETICS The POREfessional: Pearl Primer, 3ml - Estimated Value $4.23 (buy 22ml for $31)

This formula does all of the things that the original one does plus adds a hint of shimmer to brighten skin. I noticed a slight brightening effect when I applied this to half of my face on its own. As soon as I put my foundation on, the effect wasn’t noticeable, but my makeup went on nice and smooth.

TONYMOLY The Black Tea London Classic Serum, 10ml

TONYMOLY The Black Tea London Classic Serum, 10ml - Retail Value $7.82 (buy 55ml for $43)

I love me some serums, so I’m happy to see this guy in my bag this month. The formula is gel-like in texture and sinks into my skin fast, leaving it feeling refreshed. My gripe is that the tube was mostly filled with air. There was still plenty of product to try though.

Swatches (from left to right): INMO highlighter, BDB eyebrow pencil, BENEFIT primer (before rubbing in).

Here I’ve used the products from my bag this month. I used the BDB eye pencil to quickly fill in my brows and I have the BENEFIT primer on under my foundation. I used the INMO highlighter on my cheekbones and to highlight my brow bone. I think these makeup products are perfect for quick makeup days and help me to look bright and awake.

Verdict: This box has a value of $50.05 which is great for $10. I like everything this month and am happy to have received 2 full-size items. Ipsy is a great way to try new products without much risk and I hope next month includes more new products and brands.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up in this month, you’ll get next month’s box as your first box. (Check out our Ipsy Spoilers to see what’s coming up next)

Good to know: Ipsy sends out variations. You may get a completely different bag than me.

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • BDB Brow Pencil - $2
  • INMO Highlighter - $2
  • ADESSE Nail Polish - $3.60
  • BENEFIT Primer - $0.85
  • TONYMOLY Serum - $1.56
  • Bag – Not counted toward value

My bag’s shipping very late this month, along with a few other subscription boxes, and this is a month I LOVE my bag.
I only have one IPSY subscription and I’m getting:

* PURLISSE BEAUTY
Watermelon Energizing Aqua Balm

*M·A·C
False Lashes Mascara in Extreme Black

* 12 BENEFITS
Instant Healthy Hair Treatment

* GLAMOUR DOLLS
Sweet Treats Lip Gloss in Peach

* And the possibly ” meh” product-
OFRA COSMETICS
Eyeshadow in Blue Jeans

Overall, this might be the best IPSY bag I’ve ever gotten brand wise and color wise together.

My Adesse polish was very very thick and dried between one stroke and the next. Really hard ot get it to look nice, but it definitely had staying power! I’m going to try a few thinning drops because it seems like a good brand.

Jennifer

Please make sure you use thinning drops that are compatible with the polish, if it’s a 12 free polish you should use a 12 free thinner. You risk the chance of ruining the polish even further by using any other types of thinners. I learned this from a polish guru on YouTube.

Thank you for responding! This is my first month with them and the makeup bag is the only thing I got from the spoilers posted. Is it normal to not get any full sized items? Mine keep ND of looks like they just threw a bunch of random things in my bag 😥 Than you again for your expertise!!!

JuJu

That’s how it is with Ipsy, everyone gets a different curation.

You look beautiful! I love your hair style. Do you do any youtube makeup tutorials?

I used to watch makeup tutorials on youtube: Makeup by Tiffany D. I watched all the basics videos and found out I had missed some elementary information when I first started wearing makeup. It was fun and informative.

I know that MSA has done some unboxing videos, but you should hire someone or a few people who want to do makeup tutorials using the contents of a subscription.

If they were interested, I think Tiffany, Nich and Hailey would be wonderful. You could also do some clothing styling videos with Anna, Nicole, Ragan and Liz.

Obviously if the wonderful reviewers I named, and you are ALL are wonderful, are packing their bags to bug out upon hearing this suggestions, hire people who would make great additions to your staff, but also would jump at the chance and who also have great ideas on how to make the MSA youtube channel shine. Or host the videos on a new videos tab on your website.

Sorry, I got carried away, I just would love to see a makeup tutorial with Tiffany W.
