Ipsy is a monthly beauty and makeup subscription box. Each month you get full-size or deluxe-sized products, plus a cute makeup bag.

This is one of Liz’s top recommendations if you are looking for a beauty box – the value and sample sizes are amazing. (Check out our list of the Top Beauty Boxes for 2017 and our reviews of Cheap Subscription Boxes for more recommendations!)

(FYI – Just like Birchbox, Ipsy sends out many different variations of their bag each month – so my review is just one of the bag variations you might receive!)

My Subscription Addiction pays for this subscription. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

Ipsy August 2018 “Selfie with No Filter” Review

My bag this month features skincare, nail color, and makeup. Let’s see what I got!

The theme for this month is “Selfie with No Filter”. The included info card gives some summer beauty tips and info on products available in the Ipsy Shopper.

Each month, Ipsy subscribers get a makeup bag in addition to their 5 items.

This month, subscribers will receive this orange and yellow canvas bag. It’s lined with nylon and has a cute tassel on the zipper.

BILLION DOLLAR BROWS Mini Universal Brow Pencil, .27g

BILLION DOLLAR BROWS Mini Universal Brow Pencil, .27g – Retail Value $10

I’m really surprised this “universal” brow pencil matched my eyebrows so well. Typically, anything “universal” is too warm toned and looks silly. The downside is that the formula is a bit creamy, so it smears easily when I brush through my brows with a spoolie.

INMO The Universe’s Star Highlighter in Twilight, 1.5g

INMO The Universe’s Star Highlighter in Twilight, 1.5g – Retail Value $10

This peachy highlighter is super fluffy and powdery in the jar but applies and blends into the skin well. The glow it gives is subtle and looks great on cheekbones or swiped across the lid. I mostly stick with cool tone highlighters but I’m glad to have this warmer, golden option now.

ADESSE NEW YORK Gel Effect Nail Polish in New York Pink, 11ml -

ADESSE NEW YORK Gel Effect Nail Polish in New York Pink, 11ml – Retail Value $18

I received this cruelty-free, vegan, 12-free polish in a dusty-rose shade. The finish is super shiny even without a topcoat and has great lasting power layered on top of my clear dip powder covered nails. I also love that there is an expiration date on the bottle. I’m guilty of keeping my polishes around for way…too…long.

BENEFIT COSMETICS The POREfessional: Pearl Primer, 3ml – Estimated Value $4.23 (buy 22ml for $31)

This formula does all of the things that the original one does plus adds a hint of shimmer to brighten skin. I noticed a slight brightening effect when I applied this to half of my face on its own. As soon as I put my foundation on, the effect wasn’t noticeable, but my makeup went on nice and smooth.

TONYMOLY The Black Tea London Classic Serum, 10ml

TONYMOLY The Black Tea London Classic Serum, 10ml – Retail Value $7.82 (buy 55ml for $43)

I love me some serums, so I’m happy to see this guy in my bag this month. The formula is gel-like in texture and sinks into my skin fast, leaving it feeling refreshed. My gripe is that the tube was mostly filled with air. There was still plenty of product to try though.

Swatches (from left to right): INMO highlighter, BDB eyebrow pencil, BENEFIT primer (before rubbing in).

Here I’ve used the products from my bag this month. I used the BDB eye pencil to quickly fill in my brows and I have the BENEFIT primer on under my foundation. I used the INMO highlighter on my cheekbones and to highlight my brow bone. I think these makeup products are perfect for quick makeup days and help me to look bright and awake.

Verdict: This box has a value of $50.05 which is great for $10. I like everything this month and am happy to have received 2 full-size items. Ipsy is a great way to try new products without much risk and I hope next month includes more new products and brands.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up in this month, you’ll get next month’s box as your first box. (Check out our Ipsy Spoilers to see what’s coming up next)

Good to know: Ipsy sends out variations. You may get a completely different bag than me.

Value Breakdown: At $10 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • BDB Brow Pencil – $2
  • INMO Highlighter – $2
  • ADESSE Nail Polish – $3.60
  • BENEFIT Primer – $0.85
  • TONYMOLY Serum – $1.56
  • Bag – Not counted toward value

  1. My bag’s shipping very late this month, along with a few other subscription boxes, and this is a month I LOVE my bag.
I only have one IPSY subscription and I’m getting:

    * PURLISSE BEAUTY
    Watermelon Energizing Aqua Balm

    *M·A·C
False Lashes Mascara in Extreme Black

    * 12 BENEFITS
    Instant Healthy Hair Treatment

    * GLAMOUR DOLLS
Sweet Treats Lip Gloss in Peach

    * And the possibly ” meh” product-
    OFRA COSMETICS
    Eyeshadow in Blue Jeans

Overall, this might be the best IPSY bag I’ve ever gotten brand wise and color wise together.

    • That is a wonderful bag! I love Purlisse products. I got the Blue Jeans eyeshadow too and I’m meh about it too.

  2. Just got my spoilers today. Its my 1st ipsy bag & looking fed to ipsy+. I really really wish i got the belief aqua eye cream, mint pear hip rose oil, and/or full size Huda:-(

Got: ciate highlighter(swatch looks pretty), crown brush(yay!), brightening essence(look so tiny!!), oribe matte hair lotion(hope it’s not greasy), pixie blush in beach rose (I’d prefer the peach duo).

I only marked makeup tool in my quiz & got a brush, hoping for another brush come Sept.

  3. I just love it that you can put together these great looks every month!

    • Me too! I wish Tiffany had video tutorials too. She has great style.

  4. My Adesse polish was very very thick and dried between one stroke and the next. Really hard ot get it to look nice, but it definitely had staying power! I’m going to try a few thinning drops because it seems like a good brand.

    • Please make sure you use thinning drops that are compatible with the polish, if it’s a 12 free polish you should use a 12 free thinner. You risk the chance of ruining the polish even further by using any other types of thinners. I learned this from a polish guru on YouTube.

  5. The box I got is completely different.

    • That’s how it is with Ipsy, everyone gets a different curation.

    • Ipsy varies greatly

      • Thank you for responding! This is my first month with them and the makeup bag is the only thing I got from the spoilers posted. Is it normal to not get any full sized items? Mine keep ND of looks like they just threw a bunch of random things in my bag 😥 Than you again for your expertise!!!

        • I can’t remember getting full-size items other than nail polish and brushes. They do vary a lot, but all-in-all, I’m always pretty happy with mine. For $10, it’s probably my favorite subscription.

        • They’re not a full sized subscription service, so I think it’s normal. In addition to nail polish and brushes being considered full size, sheet masks are considered full size as well. (You can always see all the things they offered by clicking on “see all samples” under the images of your products on the website.)

What items did you get this month? I got the pixi by petra blush duo, tonymoly serum, make up for ever artist pencil, bang beauty eyeshadow quad, and two Lab For You masks.

        • Sometimes lippies are full size.

        • Samantha, you can go to your profile and do your product reviews and tell ipsy what you liked and dont like with each item. Example: if you liked your mac mascara, tell them. You love the brand and would.like more products from mac like lipsticks in the color red. Etc. And if uou got a nail polish, tel ln them you didnt lome the polish or the color and prefer to get a full sized lip gloss.
It all goes by what products you want. I hope that i coild help. The bags do get better if you do your reviews and let them know what is best for you and what products uou like.

        • Some people get a lot of full sizes others not so much. I get 2-3 full sizes every month. Ipsy sends full size lipsticks , blushes, highlighter, brushes, nail polishes, eyeliner, and concealer plus once I got a full size fragrance oil . Depends on profile. I am pretty much opted out of skin care which are samples and I review hair care which are also samples. I don’t choose prestige brands in profile very often which are usually samples although I did get full size Huda this month.

          • I review hair products low.

        • Samantha- I’ve had Ipsy for years and felt the same way in the beginning of my relationship (?) with them; it often felt thrown together and while maybe a couple items fit my profile, others seemed way off, like they thought I was an 11 year old Kardashian unicorn. However, over time it got much better, and I attribute that to my reviews- I highly recommend doing those; in my experience they really help improve customization! It seems like they pay more attention to the stars you give though, than the actual words you might write (just a heads up)!

        • I’m ready to cancel ipsy!! They never match me right so they obviously don’t look at my profile. I don’t wear blue eye shadow, I have neutral picked yet I got blue jeans shadow. They have things that match me but I NEVER get them. Dermstore has an EXCELLENT box I’m going to get. I throw my ipsy bag products in the trash every month, I keep thinking it’ll get better but it doesn’t. Waste of $$ !! I’d rather add that $$ to my procedure account at my plastic surgeon for my fillers!!

        • I got a full size Huda Beauty lippy!! As well as a full size highter/blush combo, the bang beauty quad smokey eyeshadow pallet(which is tiny), and deluxe size samples of the cleanance gel, and toyko labs shine spray oil….LOVED my bag this month. but pausing this next month for the boxyluxe

    • same with mine

  6. You look beautiful! I love your hair style. Do you do any youtube makeup tutorials?

I used to watch makeup tutorials on youtube: Makeup by Tiffany D. I watched all the basics videos and found out I had missed some elementary information when I first started wearing makeup. It was fun and informative.

I know that MSA has done some unboxing videos, but you should hire someone or a few people who want to do makeup tutorials using the contents of a subscription.

If they were interested, I think Tiffany, Nich and Hailey would be wonderful. You could also do some clothing styling videos with Anna, Nicole, Ragan and Liz.

Obviously if the wonderful reviewers I named, and you are ALL are wonderful, are packing their bags to bug out upon hearing this suggestions, hire people who would make great additions to your staff, but also would jump at the chance and who also have great ideas on how to make the MSA youtube channel shine. Or host the videos on a new videos tab on your website.

Sorry, I got carried away, I just would love to see a makeup tutorial with Tiffany W.

  7. Love that lipstick you have on!
